Why Will Smith Almost Said ‘No’ To The Live-Action Aladdin

Why Will Smith Almost Said ‘No’ To The Live-Action Aladdin
The Genie

Will Smith may be a desperado, but he isn’t desperate for roles. In fact, when he was presented with the idea of playing the Genie in Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin, out this weekend, the actor’s first impulse was to say no.

Why would an a-lister say no to a role in a big Disney live action adaptation? Well, Robin Williams’ original performance in 1992’s Aladdin was one of the most iconic of all-time, and Will Smith didn’t originally think he could bring anything new to the table. He told Ellen DeGeneres this week:

I was like, ‘Naw, man. No, Robin Williams like smashed that thing.’ You have to be careful stepping into projects like that. At first I looked at it… he revolutionized what you could do in these kinds of movies. I was listening and listening. I didn’t think I wanted to touch it. Then, I started playing with the music and the music was where I found my “in” to the genie.

While Will Smith initially felt he would have to pass on Aladdin, he did tinker around with the idea for a bit. He revealed on Ellen that when he went into the studio and spent some time toying around with the iconic song ‘Friend like Me’ he realized he could be the right fit for the big, blue genie.

Per the actor, the real flash of inspiration was when Will Smith realized he could bring in his Fresh Prince of Bel-Air character's characteristics and bring some hip-hop flavor to the role. He also said:

‘Friend like Me’ was the first song that I messed with in the studio and then I found that sort of hip-hop flavor. What Robin did was took his stand up and used his standup persona. I was like, ‘Oh, I could just use my Fresh Prince persona because the Genie has been forward and back in time. You can pull references from anywhere. I mirrored that, and the hip hop in was where I saw I could put my own signature while maintaining the nostalgic value.

Nostalgia is a big thing in Disney’s 2019 live-action Aladdin. Without giving too much away, the movie mirrors a lot of the iconic classic’s most memorable moments. However, it also spins the tale in a new way, with characters like Jasmine gaining agency and characters like the Genie adding a different flavor into the mix. In fact, 'Friend Like Me' has been a big entry point for Will Smith to engage with fans of the franchise as well.

Reviews are out for Aladdin now, and while not everyone loved the movie, reviews for the upcoming live action flick have generally been positive, and Will Smith has been well-liked, despite initial backlash against his version of the genie.

Whoever took on the role of the genie was always going to have to deal with being compared to Robin Williams, who would be a tough act for anyone to follow. Honestly, the role really needed to go to someone splashy with a big name in order to work, and we're lucky Will Smith said yes after much deliberation. If the Guy Ritchie flick had cast a no-name, I'm not sure that person would have been able to pull it off.

Aladdin hits theaters this Friday. For a full look at the summer movies coming up, check out our movies schedule.

Don't Ask John Cho What's Going On With Star Trek 4

Don't Ask John Cho What's Going On With Star Trek 4

The Star Trek franchise is currently in a very interesting position. Much has been said about the development of the fourth installment in the current continuity, with many reports suggesting that critical figures may or may not return. With so much uncertainty, it sounds like you shouldn't bother asking Sulu actor John Cho about SJ Clarkson's Star Trek 4. In a recent interview, the actor explained:

I know very little about this. I've heard we're going to do one. But beyond that, I don't have details. I'd rather not know; I don't want to lie. The boring answer is to wait for the powers that be to decide. If there's a Star Trek phone tree, I'm not aware. We do write long letters to each other.

So, at this point in time, John Cho still knows very little about the status of Star Trek 4. Moreover, he doesn't seem particularly interested in being involved in the decision-making process for the movie. Instead, he will just wait until the call is made and then go from there.

Of course, it doesn't sound like John Cho has any issues with the franchise at the moment. Though the film underperformed when it debuted back in 2016, Cho made sure to note in his interview with USA Today that he was unaware that the film underperformed and that he thought it was a "great movie."

Though we still don't know too much about Star Trek 4, what we have heard is enticing nonetheless. Rumors have suggested that it would be a time travel movie following the adventures of James Kirk (Chris Pine) and his father George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth). The production recently ran into a snag with the departures of Pine and Hemsworth, but rumors related to the film suggest that it's still aiming to begin filming next year.

John Cho has played a pivotal role in the rebooted Star Trek franchise ever since J.J. Abrams took the lead on Star Trek back in 2009. Portraying the role of Sulu (the part made famous by George Takei in the original series back in the 1960s), Cho has been an instrumental member of the modernized Enterprise crew, appearing in Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond. Cho also made headlines for his portrayal of Sulu in 2016's Beyond, as it was revealed that the character was gay in honor of original actor and LGBT icon George Takei.

CinemaBlend will bring you more information related to the future of the Star Trek franchise as further details are made available to us. For now, you can currently catch John Cho in his new thriller, Searching, and you can also head over to our comprehensive movie premiere guide to read up on all of the films that are set to debut on the big screen this year!

Bradley Whitford Is The MVP Of Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

Bradley Whitford Is The MVP Of Godzilla: King Of The Monsters
Godzilla: King of the Monsters Rick drinking coffee during a briefing

Warning: SPOILERS for Godzilla: King of the Monsters are in play. If you haven’t seen the film yet, bookmark this page until you’re caught up.

There were quite a few new Titans introduced to audiences in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. But in addition to those monsters, a lot of new human friends were introduced to us along the way through the film’s focus on Monarch and its organizational chaos.

Out of all of the folks making their MonsterVerse debut in director Michael Dougherty’s addition to the Godzilla canon, there’s one that I think is the MVP of the film, without question. After seeing the film twice, I cannot recommend more enthusiastically that Bradley Whitford’s Dr. Rick Stanton be named the official champion of the already impressive supporting cast of human characters.

Now this isn’t putting down any of the work done by any of the other fine actors, returning or debuting, in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, as there’s one hell of a character roster with an equally impressive cast to back it up. But if we’re going for someone who both made a huge impression, as well as helped draw the mythos of the MonsterVerse in greater detail, Bradley Whitford’s Dr. Stanton is the guy who comes through like a hero. Here are some big reasons why:

Rick Is The Perfect Surrogate For The Audience

Wading through a world of Titans and men isn’t easy, especially if you’re a human in such a world. Even if you’re an experienced viewer in the Godzilla universe, there’s quite a bit to take in with this brand new interpretation of the mythos.

As Dr. Rick Stanton is positioned as both a scientific expert and a grade-A smart-ass, he’s in the perfect place to appeal to both newbie and expert who sit down to see Godzilla: King of the Monsters. One moment, he’s reacting a serious crisis with readings and vital information, and the next he’s cracking jokes about having Godzilla in for beers or how he’d rather avoid radioactive materials in the name of preserving any future offspring.

Many of the other characters in the film, such as Kyle Chandler’s Mark Russell or even Charles Dance’s villainous Colonel Alan Jonah, are stoic figures that push the events that need to happen in Godzilla: King of the Monsters so that Godzilla vs. Kong and the rest of the MonsterVerse goes off without a hitch. But with Dr. Stanton firmly in place between those temperaments, its easy to keep the audience invested with someone asking the same sorts of questions they’d be thinking up in their seats.

Dr. Stanton’s Sense Of Humor Helps Move The Film Along

Circling back to Rick’s sense of humor, it’s also extremely helpful to have someone who isn’t afraid to help move the story along with some quick wit. And as Bradley Whitford is given a lot of opportunities as Dr. Stanton to lighten the mood, it assists in not only moving along the heavier moments, but also the entirety of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Think of the movie as a plate of food, with the Titan action as the meat and the human story as the potatoes that compliment said meat. There obviously needs to be seasoning in order to help everything mesh together, and that ingredient comes from the personalities of characters like Dr. Rick Stanton. With Rick dropping quips in-between moments of legitimate backstory and exposition, it just makes everything move easier in a film that already has a pretty well paced clip.

It also helps that Bradley Whitford happens to get some of the most sarcastic roles in Hollywood to begin with, be it in heroic and kinder parts like Josh Lyman on The West Wing or in his various villainous turns in films like Get Out and Billy Madison. So not only are you given a good dose of humor to help keep the Titan-ic story of Godzilla: King of the Monsters fresh as ever, you have a comedic assassin delivering lines that kill from the trailer to the final cut.

His Backstory Helps Tie Kong: Skull Island Into The Universe

While it’s merely hinted at in the film, Dr. Rick Stanton has a huge connection to the events of Kong: Skull Island. The connection mentioned during Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the fact that Rick is a fan of the “Dr. Brooks’ Hollow Earth Theory,” which alludes to his knowledge of Dr. Houston Brooks’ work.

Houston shows up not only in Kong: Skull Island, played by Corey Hawkins, but he also appears in this film in the Mothra cocoon scene, as portrayed by Joe Morton. But as noted in his official Monarch biography, Dr. Stanton is actually a colleague of Dr. Brooks, as they both worked for LandSat, the company that was present for the secret mapping mission in Kong: Skull Island.

Said mission intrigued Rick earlier in his career, and as he got more familiar with Houston’s role in the venture. This in turn lead to an introduction to Dr. Serizawa, and then his work as Monarch’s big time Crypto-Sonographer.

He Could Also Be The Best Link To The Future Of The Franchise

At the end of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, we’re told about expeditions that Monarch is carrying out as part of researching “The Hollow Earth.” Now you have to know that whether it’s spelt out or not, Dr. Rick Stanton would sign up for those missions in a heartbeat, leaving him to be a potentially strong link into the events of Godzilla vs. Kong.

On top of that, if Dr. Stanton volunteers to go on one of these missions, his good friend Dr. Houston Brooks would undoubtedly be joining those expeditions as well, as his work is crucial to the Hollow Earth Theory. Which means that the friendship between these characters could see Bradley Whitford and Joe Morton’s characters stealing the screen together in Godzilla vs. Kong, or any other project their storyline would be present for.

Should this come to pass, and frankly there’s no reason it shouldn’t, having Bradley Whitford and Joe Morton playing off of each other would be a hell of an exciting prospect. Not to mention, if this isn’t something Godzilla vs. Kong explores, then you have a compelling side-story/short film that could be used to help flesh out the further MonsterVerse. And you know Dr. Stanton would have a hell of a riff on the debate to whether Godzilla is a male or female Titan.

If you haven’t given Godzilla: King of the Monsters a shot, we hope we haven’t spoiled too much of the film for you. But it has to be said that with his comedic timing and his ability to deliver gags, as well as pseudo-scientific information and readings, Bradley Whitford really is the MVP of the MonsterVerse’s latest chapter. He is a valuable asset in a cast full of heavy hitters, and no matter where this film franchise goes next, Dr. Rick Stanton should be along for the ride.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is in theaters now, with Godzilla vs. Kong set to make its debut on March 13, 2020. If you’ve looking for excitement in-between those two dates, let our 2019 release schedule be your guide to adventure and merriment.

IMAX Is Opening World's Biggest Screen In 2020, And It's Wider Than A Boeing 737

IMAX Is Opening World's Biggest Screen In 2020, And It's Wider Than A Boeing 737
movie theater scene in Hugo

In the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema was king and one of the major ways that people spent their entertainment dollar. While movies have always remained important, the theater has seen increased pressure from sources like television, video games, and streaming services. To combat the competition, theaters have tried everything from adding color, to 3D, to increasing the size of the screen. This last item has never stopped being a point of differentiation, as companies like IMAX use their massive size as a major way to compete not only with other forms of media, but with other theaters. Now, the company is getting ready to unveil its biggest screen ever, at a massive 38 meters wide and 22 meters tall.

The screen is being installed at the Traumpalast Leonberg multiplex located in Leonberg, Germany and is expected to open sometime in 2020. Needless to say this is a huge benefit to the independent theater in a city which has a population of less than 50,000 people. It's a bit surprising to see a world record screen going into a theater in a relatively small part of Germany, but IMAX is a fairly new addition to the nation as a whole, with only 10 theaters currently open or contracted to open, so putting IMAX's biggest screen ever in the country can only help those efforts.

In imperial measurements, the screen is just short of 125 feet long and just over 72 feet tall. A standard IMAX screen, for comparison, comes in at 72 feet wide and 53 feet tall. The previous record holder for IMAX was a screen in Sydney Australia which measures 117 feet long.

It should be pointed out that when Deadline and IMAX refer to it as the world's largest IMAX screen, that appears to be in length only. The screen in Australia is apparently significantly taller than the one being installed in Germany, at 97 feet, and therefore is also larger from a square footage perspective.

While a bigger screen is certainly attractive, I can't help but wonder if there's a point of diminishing returns here. With the screen being so large the seating location to be able to take it all in is going to be that much further back as compared to standard IMAX. If you end up too far back, you're going to lose the benefits of the massive screen. Maybe some people won't mind watching movies like they're watching a live tennis match, but I'm not one of those people.

Which is not to say that if I found myself in Leonberg, Germany, I wouldn't buy a ticket to whatever was showing on the world's largest IMAX screen. Whatever Marvel or Lucasfilm has planned for 2020 will probably look absolutely amazing on a screen that size.

One Way Marvel Is Teasing Ant-Man In Avengers: Infinity War

One Way Marvel Is Teasing Ant-Man In Avengers: Infinity War

With less than two weeks until Avengers: Infinity War finally debuts in theaters, the marketing for the behemoth Marvel blockbuster has finally reached a fever pitch. Marvel is selling the hell out of this movie now (not that it really has to at this point), and a significant part of that process involves revealing the presence of the big (and small) Marvel heroes who will show up in the film. On that note, it looks like Marvel has finally revealed the inclusion of Paul Rudd's Ant-Man by including his suit in a new poster. Check out the brand-new piece of marketing material, below!

How badass is that picture? We get an awesome assortment of Marvel superhero outfits all neatly lined up with each other, with Scott Lang's red and black Ant-Man suit nestled firmly between Black Panther's vibranium outfit and Black Widow's new combat gear. We do not actually get a look at Paul Rudd in this photo, but the presence of his suit alongside these other outfits seems to suggest a prominent role in the film.

The inclusion of Ant-Man in Avengers: Infinity War's marketing seems particularly interesting when compared to other heroes on the Avengers roster because he's the next Marvel character on deck for a solo movie. Following the release of Avengers: Infinity War later this month, Ant-man and The Wasp will follow later this summer on July 6.

At this point, it's not entirely clear how Avengers: Infinity War will feed into the events of the upcoming Ant-Man sequel, as the recent trailer for Ant-Man and The Wasp suggests that it takes place before Infinity War. That said, the presence of Scott Lang in the Infinity War marketing should go a long way towards getting fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe incredibly excited about what's on the horizon for the rest of this year.

Of course, while this tweet seems to finally imply that Ant-Man actually is in the movie, there's another Avenger still waiting to show up in ant of the film's marketing: Hawkeye. Jeremy Renner's eagle-eyed archer has remained notably absent from all of the Avengers: Infinity War marketing material, leading many to wonder where and when he will show up -- as well as what he will look like when he finally does. Now, with Ant-Man revealed in some Infinity War marketing, our wait for Hawkeye has only become even more intense.

Avengers: Infinity War will premiere on the big screen later this month on April 27. If you are on the lookout for more information related to the film, then check out our full Infinity War guide. Beyond that, let us know which characters you are more excited to see on-screen together in the comments, below!

Matthew Vaughn Reveals His Scrapped Plans For Man Of Steel 2

Matthew Vaughn Reveals His Scrapped Plans For Man Of Steel 2
Henry Cavill as Superman in Man of Steel

Although the DC Extended Universe franchise is moving forward with numerous movies, including The Batman, The Suicide Squad and Aquaman 2, one character who’s still languishing in limbo is Superman. While he was resurrected in Justice League and looked to have a bright future ahead of him, other than making a neck-down cameo appearance in Shazam!, there’s been no movement on Kal-El’s cinematic future.

Naturally one way he could return is in Man of Steel 2, and at one point Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn was reportedly in talks to helm that sequel. However, Vaughn has now said that the movie is “officially” no longer happening.

That doesn’t bode well for Henry Cavill’s future as Superman, as it was reported (but not officially confirmed) last year that he was hanging up the red cape. However, Vaughn did provide some details on what his Man of Steel 2 would have looked like, and it borrowed elements from the Superman movie he pitched in 2008.

As Matthew Vaughn explained to Polygon, Matthew Vaughn and comic book heavyweight Mark Millar came to Warner Bros in 2008 with an idea for a cinematic Superman story that would launch a trilogy which would have been, as Millar once called it, “a massive, uplifting, hopeful thing.” But Vaughn’s Superman movie also would have been incredibly different than what’s come before, as it sees Kal-El growing up on Krypton.

The first movie of this proposed trilogy would have taken place almost entirely on Krypton and focused on Jor-El and Krypton’s impending destruction. However, these events would have happened later in the timeline, allowing Kal-El to reach adulthood on Krypton, learn about Earth there and then have to reckon with his loyalty to both planets.

Given how Man of Steel began with the more traditional Superman origin story, with Kal-El being sent off Krypton as an infant and the planet exploding soon after, then obviously a Matthew Vaughn-directed Man of Steel 2 couldn’t have been a direct adaptation of his Superman pitch from last decade and still fit within DCEU continuity. So unless the plan was for this movie to be set outside that franchise, I’m curious about what ideas Vaughn would have carried over.

Perhaps Man of Steel 2 would have seen Superman departing Earth and going on an adventure elsewhere in the galaxy, as the DCEU has yet to deeply delve into its cosmic roots yet. Henry Cavill had expressed interest in having Brainiac be Man of Steel 2’s main villain, and in the modern era, he’s usually connected to Krypton’s history. That said, perhaps taking that kind of creative approach would have resulted in Man of Steel 2 feeling too similar to the Syfy series Krypton.

In any case, Matthew Vaughn directing Man of Steel 2 didn’t work out, although he’s not opposed to the idea of still working in the DC Comics realm, saying “it’d be hard to say no” if he was given the opportunity to direct a new Superman movie. At one point Mission: Impossible - Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie was also in consideration to helm Man of Steel 2, but that also fell through.

So for now, Superman is still sitting on the proverbial shelf, and we’ll have to wait and see if Henry Cavill ever gets to play him again or if a new actor will don the ’S’ shield, whether it be in a DCEU-set movie or a standalone story. For now, you can keep up to date with what the DCEU has coming down the pipeline with our handy guide.

The Best Zombie Movies Broken Down By Zombie-Type

The Best Zombie Movies Broken Down By Zombie-Type
Dawn of the Dead

Out of all the monster movie genres out there, few have gotten as many entries as the zombie genre. Some may argue hype on the genre has somewhat cooled, although with The Walking Dead set to start making Rick Grimes features, and more shows and films springing up all the time, it's safe to say the zombie genre will not die. Kind of ironic, right?

With that said, there have been so many entries in the zombie genre that some of the better quality features have been lost in the mix as decades pass. Additionally, some audiences may have specific zombies they want to see in a movie, be it the iconic walker, aggressive runners, classic voodoo, or the lighthearted funny zombie flick. These are the definitive picks for the best zombie films someone should hit up first before getting into the other offerings.

The Best Walker Zombie Movies

Walker zombies are the traditional type of zombie most people are familiar with. They're slow moving, work in large numbers and aren't always the sharpest tools in the box. There are exceptions, of course, but these types of zombies are built more towards building films more on suspense and claustrophobic situations than fast-paced over-the-top action.

Dawn Of The Dead

It's impossible to make a list of great zombie films without featuring at least one by the godfather of modern zombies. George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead is one of his most profitable and critically acclaimed features, and has served as the inspiration for numerous zombie movies that followed. The effects may be a bit dated compared to shows like The Walking Dead, but the story is as timeless as ever and remains a classic.

Zombie

Zombie, or Zombi 2 in Italy, features the traditional type of walker zombie, although this one is technically a mixture between walker/voodoo genres. With that said, voodoo isn't as heavy to the plot as some of the entries seen later. What this movie is heavy on is some truly gross and cringe-worthy imagery to see in this feature. There's also an underwater zombie that gets into it with a shark, and that alone is worth the price of admission.

Planet Terror

Planet Terror isn't the most conventional zombie film out there, which may be why more folks are drawn to it as time goes on. While Robert Rodriguez's feature was viewed as the lesser in the grindhouse double feature, there's no denying its unique style and aesthetic have helped it become a stand out of the genre. It also helps Rose McGowan's character has a gun for a leg.

The Best Runner Zombie Movies

As the name would imply, runner zombies are more fast-moving and generally more athletic than the walker-types. These zombies plow ahead with reckless abandon, and generally have little regard for their own preservation or other zombies around them. Speed is obviously a scary attribute for a monster that doesn't have to worry about endurance, so runner zombie movies are often high-action and high intensity throughout a bulk of the feature.

28 Days Later

There are some movies that, if someone is looking to get into the zombie genre, can't be missed. 28 Days Later is mandatory viewing for its heart-pounding action, fast and strong as hell zombies, and view of just how bleak a post-apocalyptic zombie world can be. There's also times where Danny Boyle's film is beautiful, in what may be one of the most aesthetically pleasing zombie movie for film buffs.

Train To Busan

South Korea isn't typically known as a hub for films that appeal to an American audience, but the nation has had a few hits over the years. Even for those who aren't too psyched for foreign language films with subtitles, Train To Busan is worth checking out. Perhaps the best part of this film is the zombies' one weakness being an inability to see in the dark, which makes for incredibly tense and heart-pounding scenes.

World War Z

A lot of die hard zombie fans will take issue with this entry, mainly because it's not the same quality of the Max Brooks novel it was adapted from. Be that as it may, World War Z has some fantastic sequences with runner zombies, and it takes advantage of its big Hollywood budget to show some scenes most zombie movies haven't pulled off. Unfortunately, the long in-development sequel was cancelled, so chances of a follow up are slim.

The Best Voodoo Zombie Movies

Before George Romero brought zombies back into the mainstream, voodoo zombies were typically the cinematic standard for zombies in cinema. These creatures are typically similar attribute-wise to walker zombies, but enslaved throughout the use of Haitian Voodoo magic or some spell that enslaves them to an individual. For those looking for some of the beginnings of zombies in Hollywood, these are the films to start with.

White Zombie

White Zombie is regarded as the first feature length zombie film, and the movie that laid the groundwork for others. Dracula icon Bela Lugosi plays a witch doctor who is capable of taking dead bodies, re-animating them and making them his slaves. It's far from the modern interpretation of a zombie, but it is based in the Haitian voodoo interpretation of zombies. For those that want to see where it all started, this is where it starts.

Sugar Hill

One of the more contemporary voodoo zombie films, Sugar Hill is a '70s blaxploitation film about a vengeful woman who seeks revenge on the mob boss who killed her boyfriend. Diane "Sugar" Hill goes to a former voodoo queen and ends up summoning Baron Samedi and zombies to take the fight to the mob. This might be one of the only movies where the main character is actually the source of a zombie outbreak.

Voodoo Man

Voodoo Man is one of the weirder entries on this list, as it goes from traditional voodoo zombie film to meta by the movie's end. Without revealing too much about the film's ending, a character suggests making a movie called "Voodoo Man" and requests that Bela Lugosi (who is in the film) be in the movie. Considering this movie starts with a doctor tricking women into stealing their essences to resurrect his dead wife, that's kind of impressive.

The Best Comedy Zombie Films

These aren't necessarily a type of zombie per se, but there's been a handful of zombie comedy movies that are some of the best zombie films out there. These movies typically have a mixture of different zombie types, and can poke fun at the overall silliness of the genre. For those looking for a laugh just as much as gore, look no further than these great movies.

Zombieland

One of the zombie genre's funniest films is also one of its most star-studded, as Zombieland boasts talent like Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray. The zombie rules of survival in this movie are great advice should an actual zombie apocalypse ever hit, and the zombie attacks highlight some of the sillier encounters a more serious zombie film wouldn't tackle. It's no wonder audiences are still excited for a sequel a decade later!

Shaun of the Dead

Had Shaun of the Dead never been made, it's possible the careers of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost wouldn't have skyrocketed to the status they enjoy now. That's not important when it comes to the film, which is a fantastic zombie flick regardless of its impact on those individuals. Shaun's story is exceptionally well told, and most zombie movie lovers can attest that strong individual stories are not a strength of the zombie genre.

Dead Alive

This is zombie comedy that's a bit of a cult classic, mainly because its relatively unknown director at the time became a pretty big deal years later. Even if most folks check this out due to their love of Lord of the Rings and Peter Jackson, Dead Alive is a pretty funny film, with some of the more obscene slapstick humor that can't be found in most zombie films.

Do you have a great zombie movie that didn't make the list that folks should check out? Be sure to post it below in the comics and keep with CinemaBlend for all the latest news on zombies, movies, and all things entertainment.

Paul Bettany Says He Knows What Happens In Avengers 4, But He's Not Talking

Paul Bettany Says He Knows What Happens In Avengers 4, But He's Not Talking

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War. If you haven't seen yet, look away!

Avengers: Infinity War is gearing up for its third weekend at the box office, and cinephiles and comic book fans alike are still recovering from the blockbuster's devastating consequences. 10 years and 18 movies came to a head when the MCU's biggest characters joined together to fight off Josh Brolin's Thanos. One of the actors who has been with the shared universe since the beginning is Paul Bettany, who voiced J.A.R.V.I.S. before eventually taking the role of Vision in live-action. His character's fate was looking especially gloomy in Infinity War, but Bettany isn't going to start spoiling the film's contents anytime soon. As he recently told it,

I happen to know what's going to happen to me, and ... what I can tell fans is that, 'Snitches end up with stitches in ditches.' And I, I've done very well keeping my mouth shut for the last 10 years, and I'm going to continue to keep my mouth shut.

While Paul Bettany knows what ultimately happens to Vision and the rest of The Avengers in the next big ensemble movie, the actor has made a habit of keeping tight lipped about the MCU. While actors like Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland are notoriously bad with spoilers, Bettany is keeping his gold star well into his tenth year in the shared universe.

Paul Bettany's comments to ABC News may come to a surprise to the more casual Marvel fans out there. While Vision made his first appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Bettany's tenure in the MCU goes all the way back to Iron Man. He voiced Tony Stark's operating system J.A.R.V.I.S. for the first Avengers movie and all three Iron Man flicks, meaning he's one of the OG members of the entire cinematic universe.

From the time that Avengers: Infinity War was first being advertised, things didn't look good for Vision. Thanos was coming to collect the Infinity Stones, and Vision just happened to have one of them in his forehead. The film saw the Avengers attempt to protect him from the Mad Titan's forces, while Shuri worked to find a way to save Vision if the stone was destroyed. Ultimately fans watched in horror as Vision died--- twice. Poor guy.

Fans are eager to see how the MCU moves forward after the myriad character deaths, and are left to wonder if any of the fallen will return from the dead. If Shuri managed to save Vision's consciousness before Thanos' snap, then maybe he could be brought back in another body. One could only hope, as the character was becoming more complex through his relationship to Wanda.

Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now, and Avengers 4 will answer our questions on May 3, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

How Clark Gregg Originally Found Out He'd Be In More Than Iron Man Movies In The MCU

How Clark Gregg Originally Found Out He'd Be In More Than Iron Man Movies In The MCU
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson in Iron Man 2

While Clark Gregg's agent Phil Coulson doesn't have superpowers, the character is as loved by fans as any of the Avengers. Between his appearance in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, and the ongoing Agents of SHIELD TV series, he's become a significant part of the story. However, if it was always the plan for Coulson to become a recurring part of the MCU, somebody forgot to tell Clark Gregg, as he didn't know his role was growing until the middle of filming Iron Man 2. According to Gregg...

During one of those [Iron Man 2] scenes they said, ‘Oh Tony, you’ve got to tell him he’s going to New Mexico.’ Finally, after I did a couple of takes, because I was obedient and happy to be there, I was like, ‘One question: What’s in New Mexico?’ And they said, ‘Oh, Thor! You’re going to be the one to find his hammer. Are you free?’ And I was like, ‘Oh shit, I’m going to get free!’

Clark Gregg made his debut as Agent Phil Coulson in the original Iron Man, back when the only hint that there was ever going to be anything like the MCU came in a post-credits sequence back when people didn't know they needed to stay through the credits. He was Tony Stark's liaison with SHIELD.

He returned for Iron Man 2 and likely just assumed that he'd just be a small part of whatever shenanigans Tony Stark got up to. The Incredible Hulk was the only other Marvel movie at that point and while Robert Downey Jr. did appear in a post credits sequence of his own, connecting the stories, it still wasn't clear just how well the MCU idea would work. Hulk wasn't a hit like Iron Man had been.

It's clear from the way Clark Gregg talks to Polygon that he's as much a fan of the Marvel movies as he is happy to be a part of them. Of course he would get excited about the chance to be in Thor as well as the Iron Man movies. I like how it was just sort of planned to have Clark Gregg appear in the movie and he was asked if he was free after telling him he was going. Based on his response, it was probably assumed he would make himself available if he made it clear how happy he was to be making the movies.

His fate in The Avengers was probably somewhat disappointing to him, though Gregg says he was humbled by the outpouring of support from fans who wanted to find a way to bring him back. One theory was that dead Coulson could have been a Skrull. Now, Gregg is back on the big screen in the MCU in the 90s prequel Captain Marvel which opens on Friday, and so are the Skrulls. Is Coulson actually a Skrull? No spoilers.

The 25 Most Emotional Moments In Avengers: Endgame

The 25 Most Emotional Moments In Avengers: Endgame
Hawkeye teaching archery to his daughter

Warning: Based on the box office, the entire world saw Avengers: Endgame this weekend, but if you somehow didn’t, click on one of our other fine stories because the spoileriest of SPOILERS are contained within!

In pop culture’s most emotionally exhausting weekend ever, Avengers: Endgame delivered all the emotional wallop that we’ve been predicting and expecting for years. Avengers: Endgame was billed as a culmination; a definitive ending to The Infinity Saga story that we have been following since 2008. That finality meant that no one, at least none of the original six Avengers, was safe, and being that we’ve invested so much time with these characters, the potential for tears was high.

Avengers: Endgame did not disappoint on this front and the only gauntlet more powerful than the infinity, is the emotional one this movie puts you through. With that in mind, here are the 25 of the most emotional moments in Avengers: Endgame.

Hawkeye Losing His Family

We saw a lot of people die at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, but there was one set of deaths saved for the very beginning of Avengers: Endgame. This climactic film barely gave you time to get adjusted in your seat before it hit you with the emotional gut punch of Hawkeye losing his family (as I predicted, by the way). While on house arrest, Clint Barton was enjoying time with his family, teaching his daughter archery, unaware of the war raging in Wakanda. Then, suddenly his wife and kids were all gone and his whole world with them.

Message For Pepper

This moment was partially shown in the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame, but that didn’t take away from its emotional impact in the film. Tony Stark, far from home, with no hope of rescue and a clock rapidly ticking down to his death, uses some of his remaining time to send a message to his one true love, Pepper Potts. Their relationship is the longest in the MCU and Pepper was the one person who could turn Tony Stark from playboy to husband. His sweet and loving message in this moment is testament to that.

Rocket And Nebula Holding Hands

The Decimation was particularly devastating for the Guardians, who had already lost Gamora and were whittled down to only Rocket Raccoon and Nebula. Rocket was left on Earth alone, surrounded by strangers, with no way to know if his adoptive family was simply missing or gone with half of the rest of the universe. And it was particularly sad for Nebula, who has yearned for love and acceptance for so long to lose her sister and her friends. So when Captain Marvel returns Nebula to Earth, the reunion between her and Rocket where they hold hands was beautiful and touching.

Tony’s Breakdown

We heard that Captain America: Civil War should be part of any MCU re-watch prep before Endgame, and this moment makes it clear why. The rift formed in that film was deep and long-lasting. When Tony is rescued from space and returns to Avengers HQ, he has a breakdown and basically blames Cap for not being there when he needed him. Tony Stark is in pain, unable to process his grief and lashing out to try and assign blame for what happened. It’s tough to watch, but it rings true for these characters after the events of Civil War.

The Stones Are Gone

When going to get Thanos on his garden retirement planet, Cap says that he doesn’t know what he’s going to do if it doesn’t work. Then it doesn’t. The Avengers easily subdue Thanos, but he reveals that he reduced the Infinity Stones to atoms to prevent temptation for them to be used again. Thor finally goes for the head, but it doesn’t matter. Thanos still won. This moment is, for the time being, the complete loss of hope, with the faintest glimmer snuffed out due to Thanos and his inevitability and it leaves the heroes reeling for five years.

The Support Group

In HBO’s The Leftovers, the characters are struggling to move on, to find hope in their grief at the loss of 2% of the world’s population. In Endgame, 50% of all life has been extinguished and we see how emotionally wrecked the survivors are. Here, co-director Joe Russo cameos as a man who lost his partner to the snap. He talks about how difficult it is to begin living again and to open himself up to love after having it ripped away from him. It is sad, but also hopeful as he says he’s going on another date.

Black Widow Tearfully Carrying On

I think it’s safe to say that the original six Avengers saved the best for last when it comes to many of their performances, and that rings especially true for Scarlett Johansson. After the time jump, Black Widow is still carrying on, trying to keep the world safe because that is all she knows how to do and it seems like she thinks she owes it to everyone. It’s a lonely position and we see that weariness on her face. And when Rhodey tells her about what Clint has been doing, you can see and feel her grief and heartbreak.

"I Love You 3000"

As audiences began seeing Avengers: Endgame and expressing their gratitude to Marvel Studios, the Russo Brothers and the Avengers themselves, one of the common refrains was “I love you 3000.” These are the words Tony Stark’s daughter Morgan says to him in the film. In a sweet moment in Morgan’s bedroom, we see that Tony Stark, once the last person in the world who should be a father, has become a great one. It’s love we all hope to have in our lives, and this love drives Tony’s desire to maintain the present in the rest of the film.

Scott Finds Cassie Alive

When Scott Lang emerges from the Quantum Realm and enters a world that is unlike the one he left, he sees monuments to all the people who died in the snap. It’s a moment of sheer terror and dread as he looks, hoping not to see his daughter Cassie’s name. It’s like when you hear a friend or family member got in an accident and are fearful of the worst. So when he knocks on the door and finds Cassie alive and much older than when he left her, a wave of relief washes over him and us.

"Don’t Give Me Hope"

After a really cool sequence of Ronin killing a bunch of people, Natasha finally finds him. She sees what the loss of his family has done to him and he tells her she shouldn’t be there, almost embarrassed and not wanting her to see him like this. When she tells him there’s a chance to undo it, he responds with the devastating “Don’t give me hope.” It’s heartbreaking to see how he has lost so much that he doesn’t even want to think about getting it back because the pain will be far too great if it doesn’t work.

Tony And Cap Reconciling

It sucks to have to choose sides and to see two people whom you both care about fighting. So when Tony races up to Avengers HQ to offer his services, the wounds of the past begin to heal. Tony mentions not wanting to have resentment and he returns Steve Rogers’ shield to him. They reconcile, finally ending their civil war and moving forward as friends and teammates as they were always meant to be. It’s incredibly heartwarming to see these two pillars of the MCU finally together again, not only fighting the same enemies, but being on the same team.

Rocket Talking About His Family

Rocket Raccoon is quietly one of the most tragic characters in the MCU, and we see that again in Avengers: Endgame. When on the mission to Asgard to get the Reality Stone, Rocket has to snap Thor out of his malaise, and to do that, the sweet rabbit shrugs off his hardened exterior to talk about his family, the Guardians, how they’re gone and how much it means to him to get them back. The family you choose is just as important to the family you’re born into, and hearing how much the Guardians mean to Rocket is quite moving.

Thor And Frigga

Leave it to Avengers: Endgame to somehow make Thor: The Dark World, considered by many to be the MCU’s worst movie, so much more meaningful to the character in hindsight. At this point, Thor has lost Loki, Odin, Frigga and half his people, arguably more than any other Avenger. So for him to get to see his mother Frigga again, and to finally get some sort of goodbye is extremely moving. Her motherly wisdom helps him to find a path forward, to become who he is and who he is meant to be, not who inheritance and title dictate.

Tony Talking To His Father

All the best superheroes have daddy issues, and that adage holds true for Tony Stark. The genius’ relationship with his father has always been complicated and it is only after Howard is gone that Tony is able to understand him, appreciate what he gave and forgive him his mistakes. When Tony and Steve go back to the '70s and Tony sees his father again, he is able to have the kind of conversation with his father he never could before. Tony ends up imparting some wisdom to Howard and basically tells his dad thanks and that he loves him.

Steve Looking At Peggy Carter

Duty has always had to come before love and personal happiness for Steve Rogers. That’s just who he is, but sometimes it is harder than others. That’s what happens when Steve is in the past in Peggy Carter's office. She is right there, the love of his life is just feet away, and all that separates them is glass. And yet he cannot go to her and his longing is palpable. It is incredibly sad because it seems to him, and us in that moment, that that’s as close as they’ll ever come again.

Black Widow’s Death

Before Endgame, the smart money was on Tony or Cap dying, and with her own solo film on the way, Black Widow was not an obvious candidate. But the Soul Stone exacts the ultimate price, and that lead to one of the film’s most emotional moments. Natasha, the torchbearer for the Avengers, willing to do whatever it takes, and Clint, the broken man, wanting his death to mean something, battled each other for the right to die. We didn’t want either to win, and when Black Widow kicks off the cliff and Hawkeye screams in agony, we feel his pain.

Nebula And Rhodey

This was a great movie for Karen Gillan’s Nebula as we got to see even more of how tragic she is as a character. In a surprising and emotional moment with Rhodey, she tells him that she wasn’t always like this, lamenting the artificial enhancements forced upon her when she wasn’t good enough. Rhodey, who now requires mechanical assistance due to his injuries, empathizes and tells her that they work with what they got. It was a beautiful kindness that showed that it’s not flesh and blood and bone that makes someone human (or Luphomoid), but actions and choices.

Call From Laura Barton

After losing Black Widow, the Avengers needed the plan to work so that her sacrifice would mean something. After they craft a gauntlet, Bruce snaps his fingers and there is a moment of uncertainty. Then, we hear Clint Barton’s phone and see that it is his wife Laura calling. As he’s picking it up, you can see that he allows hope to creep back in, but it is paired with trepidation, fearful of the possibility that that hope could yet be dashed. The relief on Hawkeye’s face as he picks it up and hears his wife’s voice is super moving.

Cap Is Worthy

Not all of the emotional moments in this film are sad; some fill your heart with happiness and make you pump your fist in excitement. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, we got the first inkling that Steve Rogers was worthy to wield Mjolnir, and in one of Avengers: Endgame’s most crowd-pleasing moments, we find out for sure. Thor’s “I knew it” is a great callback drowned out by theater cheers and then we see Cap, taking on Thanos with his shield and Mjolnir in a moment that elicits one pure emotion: glee.

Avengers Assemble!

The first 11 years of the MCU have built to this film and the entire history of comic book movies feels like it built to this moment. After Cap stands alone against Thanos and his horde, the cavalry comes in. All the snapped characters have returned to the fight, and this emotional moment sends serious chills down your spine. And when we finally, after nearly two dozen movies, get to hear “Avengers Assemble!” as Cap stands with all the heroes of the MCU in an image out of a comic, the only tears shed are ones of joy.

Tony Hugging Peter

Tony Stark has always been one to opt for jokes and snark over sincere affection, and that was the case with his protege Peter Parker. But when Peter Parker fell to Thanos, it wrecked Iron Man in a way no one’s death save Pepper’s could. Peter was perhaps the person that made Tony want kids and the person that made him join the Time Heist. So when Peter is brought back and Tony gives him a genuine hug in the middle of battle, showing his love for him, it is one of the film’s most heartwarming moments.

Star-Lord Seeing Gamora Again

We all assumed that somehow, the victims of the snap in Avengers: Infinity War would be returned to life in Endgame. But things were less certain for Gamora, who was killed prior to the snap. And ultimately, the Gamora we knew is still dead. But for Peter Quill, just seeing her again, even if she didn’t know him or the history and love they shared, gave him hope that neither time nor space nor death could keep them apart. He got an unfortunate knee for his trouble, but now he gets to fall in love with her all over again.

Tony Stark’s Death And Funeral

Tony Stark started the MCU and he’s the character that we’ve spent the most time with, so his death and funeral elicited quite a few sniffles in the theater. From Peter Parker telling him he would be okay to Pepper letting him know that her and Morgan would be all right, it was tough to hold back the tears. Then the film delivered a scene out of a comic, as all the characters of the MCU attended the funeral for Earth’s greatest protector, who sacrificed himself to ensure victory. It was hauntingly beautiful and a sorrowful ending to the battle.

Cap Passing His Shield To Sam

We’ve long wondered what would happen once Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers hung up the shield and if he would pass it off to either Sam or Bucky as he has done in the comics. The Winter Soldier deferred to Sam and an old Cap passed his shield on to Falcon, in whom Cap saw the heart required to wield it. It was an incredible show of trust and belief, and although Falcon was grateful, there was also a bit of sadness, because wielding the shield meant that Steve no longer would, making the whole thing bittersweet.

Steve And Peggy Get Their Dance

While there is some grumbling about the can of worms this ending opens, it cannot be denied that it is perfect on a thematic and emotional level. Cap has always been a man out of time. He's able to find purpose, but not true happiness; not a real life in modern times. So it is a beautiful and emotional ending for him to find peace by returning to the past to live the life he missed out on and finally collect on that rain check for a dance with Peggy Carter.

As long as this list is, it is still not all encompassing, Let us know the Avengers: Endgame moment that tugged at your heartstrings the most in the comments below and check out our 2019 release schedule for all the movies headed your way this summer.

Sounds Like Rocket Has A Major Role In Avengers: Endgame

Sounds Like Rocket Has A Major Role In Avengers: Endgame
Rocket in Infinity War

There are just two movies left in Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the stakes couldn't be higher. Following the unexpected ending of Avengers: Infinity War, it was clear that the Russo Brothers weren't fooling around, and are willing to kill off any and all characters to service the greater story. Thanos' victory in accruing the Infinity Stones wiped out half the galaxy, with both the surviving heroes and the audience left to watch in horror as countless characters faded to dust.

The Guardians of the Galaxy were hit especially hard from Thanos' assault, with Gamora being killed so her adopted father could get the Soul Stone, and everyone but Rocket wiped out from Thanos' snap (aka The Decimation). Sean Gunn plays Rocket via motion capture on set, and recently teased a major role for the foul mouthed Guardian in Avengers: Endgame, saying:

All I can say is that Rocket gets to meet a lot of interesting new people that he has not met before in Endgame and I think I'll leave it at that.

Bring on the crossovers. Prior to Infinity War, the Guardians of the Galaxy were kept largely separate from the rest of the MCU, due to their cosmic setting and place in the overall timeline of the shared universe. But Rocket is here in the present, and will be among the rest of the survivors once Endgame finally arrives in theaters next month.

Rocket and Groot spent much of Infinity War alongside Chris Hemsworth's Thor, as he went on a journey to get Stormbreaker. It was a great character pairing, and he and Thor will likely continue vibing during Endgame. The trio ultimately made it to the Battle of Wakanda in the nick of time, and took out Thanos' forces in quick succession. But it wasn't enough to stop the snap, and Rocket watched Groot turn to dust before his eyes. And this time, his best friend didn't come back to life.

Rocket was seen among the rest of the survivors in the Avengers: Endgame trailer, although his role and the entire movie's story are a complete mystery to the general public. But Sean Gunn's comments to IGN are sure to excite the fandom, who are hoping that the character shared by Gunn and Bradley Cooper will have plenty of screen time in the upcoming blockbuster. The surviving heroes are going to have to lean on each other if they hope to reverse Thanos' snap, and will need help in the form of Captain Marvel, Ant-Man, and Ronin.

It should be interesting to see who Rocket ends up interacting with in Endgame, especially given the character's signature attitude. He seems like the perfect foil for uptight Avengers like Captain America and Bruce Banner, as well as egos like Iron Man and Captain Marvel. Smart money says he ends up providing some much needed comedic relief to an otherwise somber movie.

Answers will come when Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Bond 25 Explosion Causes Crew Injury

Bond 25 Explosion Causes Crew Injury
Daniel Craig as James Bond in Spectre

After dealing with numerous obstacles and delays, Bond 25 is finally on the calendar, and cameras began rolling on Daniel Craig’s final outing as James Bond at the end of April. However, the production has been a little bumpy so far. First Craig injured his ankle, requiring him to get a minor ankle surgery.

Now it’s been announced that that a Bond 25 crew member suffered an injury during a controlled explosion. Here’s the official statement on the matter:

Thankfully it doesn’t sound like this injury the crew member is anything life-threatening, and those who were on the set came out unscathed. The Sun reports that the crew was testing out a stunt involving a fireball in a laboratory when the accident occurred, which resulted part of the roof and numerous wall panels in the complex were taken out. The crew member was crushed by part of the set as he stood on a ramp outside. A source that spoke to the outlet described the event as “utter chaos.”

Making a movie is no easy feat, and inevitably complications will arise. Still, the fact that two people have been injured during the course of filming Bond 25 is concerning. Fingers crossed there isn’t a third instance on the horizon. The last thing this movie needs is to be labeled as “cursed.”

Judging from the available information, it doesn’t sound like this latest Bond 25 fiasco will result in filming being delayed. In the case of Daniel Craig’s ankle injury, production was temporarily halted, but it was later announced that as Craig rehabilitated for two weeks post-surgery, production would continue. That information was revealed on May 22, so Craig is either back on the Bond 25 set or will be back relatively soon.

It’s ben a long road to getting Bond 25 off the ground, from numerous script rewrites (Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge has worked on the latest drafts), a new distribution deal and the uncertainty about whether or not Daniel Craig would play James Bond for a fifth time. Bond 25 was also originally supposed to be directed by Danny Boyle, but he departed due to creative differences and Cary Funkanaga was tapped to replace him.

No specific Bond 25 plot details have been revealed yet, but the movie will feature quite a few familiar faces. Joining Daniel Craig’s 007 again are Ralph Fiennes as M, Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny, Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner, Ben Whishaw as Q, Léa Seydoux as Dr. Madeleine Swann and Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter. The newcomers include Ana de Armas as Palmoa, Lashana Lynch as Nomi, David Dencik as Waldo and Rami Malek as the unidentified main villain, as well as Billy Magnussen and Dali Benssalah in undisclosed roles.

Bond 25 is still scheduled for release on April 8, 2020, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on how it’s coming along. If you’re curious about what movies are coming out later this year, you can find that information in our 2019 release schedule.

The Emotional Mary Poppins Returns Song Emily Blunt Struggled To Get Through

The Emotional Mary Poppins Returns Song Emily Blunt Struggled To Get Through

1964's Mary Poppins remains to be a memorable film to treasure, especially the music beautifully sung by Julie Andrews. Aside from her showstopping duets with Dick Van Dyke in numbers such as Jolly Holiday and Chim Chim Cher-ee, there was something especially magical about the soft and sweet moments between Mary and the Banks children. The heart of the film was in the sweet lullabies such as "Stay Awake" and "Feed the Birds (Tuppence a Bag)".

Emily Blunt will have her own heartwarming moment reminiscent of these in Mary Poppins Returns, with the song "The Place Where Lost Things Go." At a press conference I attended for the film, Blunt discussed the beautiful song that Mary sings to the new Banks children, who have recently lost their mother. In her words:

I was so incredibly moved by it that I found it virtually impossible to get through it the first few times I sang it in (composer Marc Shaiman's apartment). It was so emotional for me because I did think of my own children, and these children in the film -- their sense of loss, they're trying to hold their father together and they've dealt with something so profound and so agonizing to lose a parent and to be so young and miss her so much and oh my God, I could cry thinking about it. But it was just, it just moved me so much. And so on the day, it was one of my favorite days on set.

You've been warned, tissues are needed to get through Mary Poppins Returns. The film follows the Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) as an adult struggling to hold together raising his three children keep his finances afloat following the death of his wife. His sister Jane (Emily Mortimer) tries to help too, but when Mary Poppins swings into town to offer her nanny services, it certainly sweetens up the situation.

"Where the Lost Things Go" is a touching track cooked up by composers and lyricists Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, meant to ease the children's loss in their time of need. Emily Blunt continued with these words about the new track:

She recognizes what they need in that moment, and gives it to them in this very tender way. And this song is so true. And she doesn't shy away from the fact that they've lost something, but that there's cracks in the light and there's something to learn from. And the idea of loss being something that they can digest as children and to walk through, you know that you all have to walk through this last bit. Nothing's gone forever, only out of place. It's just such hopeful, powerful way to look at loss.

Tackling loss in a family friendly film is a heavy subject, but it's also a theme that continues what the classic Mary Poppins is remembered for. In the original, Jane and Michael Banks were living in a household with parents detached to them, making them feel lonely and unheard. Enter Mary -- who takes them to imaginative escapes and provides some worthwhile lessons for them and their parents. Dealing with loss through this song brings more heart to the film.

The song also is rooted in P.L. Travers' books, which the story of Mary Poppins is originally based on. Composer Marc Shaiman chimed in at the conference and explained where they got the idea for the song:

The song came from one of the books, Mary's uncle is the man in the moon, and she takes the children there for a tea party, but on the other side of the moon, he tells her, this is where the things that people can't find live -- on the dark side of the moon... We had to find a way for her to sing about loss to the children in ways that they can comprehend, and the song doesn't actually speak of their mother until the final verse, until she feels like they're really getting it, and then to get to hear Emily (Blunt) sing it, I mean, she would come to our apartment where we have a studio. It was just magical to hear her do it.
