What Ewan McGregor Could Look Like As DCs Black Mask

Casting comic book movies is a trick thing. Each superhero or villain is iconic in their own right, and the hardcore fandom judges each actor based on how accurately they'll resemble the source material. As such, each time a superhero movie gets green-lit, all eyes are on the cast list. DC's Birds of Prey has been doing just that, with reports indicating that Ewan McGregor is circling the role of the villainous Black Mask.

Now a fan has rendered what the Star Wars actor would look like as Gotham City mob boss Roman Sionis. And since he'd obviously be wearing the Black Mask itself, there are actually three images. Check it out.

Pretty awesome right? With Ewan McGregor reportedly in final negotiations to play the central villain in Birds of Prey, it's exciting to have a visual to associate with the developing story. And it shows how awesome the actor could inhabit the space, if he gets the chance.

This new image comes to us from Geek Vibes Nation, and shows that Ewan McGregor might look like as the Batman rogue. McGregor has had a long career in movies, but he doesn't typically play villainous roles. He was a shining light as Obi-Wan in the Star Wars prequels, and has brought a similar charm to projects like Christopher Robin and Moulin Rouge. So seeing McGregor as a cruel mob boss sounds like a fascinating departure-- especially as part of the DC live-action universe.

While DC has announced plenty of live-action projects with no foreseeable release date, Birds of Prey (if that is indeed its title) is actively developing its cast and crew. Cathy Yan is on board as director, and has been assembling a team to bring DC's second female-fronted franchise forward. Birds of Prey even has a release date, so all signs point to the upcoming team-up film actually hitting theaters in the next few years.

Ewan McGregor's name has been tossed around for Black Mask for a while now, although the most recent report indicated he was in the final negotiations for Birds of Prey. That timing sounds about right, as the movie has been adding stars recently.

Birds of Prey will first and foremost be a vehicle for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, who became a fan favorite with David Ayer's Suicide Squad. But there's also plenty of new faces, including a trio of DC favorites. They include ultra violent Helena Bertinelli / Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Dinah Lance / Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). The future of DC is female, and they're going to have to go toe to toe with Black Mask in their debut.

The plot of Birds of Prey is still a mystery at this point, but DC fans are eager to see more of Gotham City and Batman lore enter the DC Universe. Hopefully it'll one day include crossovers with Batman-- if Ben Affleck is even attached to the role by then.

Birds of Prey is currently set to arrive February 7th, 2020. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Amanda Bynes Fought For Channing Tatums Shes The Man Role

Amanda Bynes Fought For Channing Tatums Shes The Man Role

Channing Tatum is one of the most versatile actors making movies today, jumping from the dance competition franchise Step Up to starring a buddy comedy with Jonah Hill in 21 Jump Street to lending his voice in animated films like The LEGO Movie and Smallfoot. All this started with the 2006 rom-com She's the Man opposite Amanda Bynes, who recently said she helped get the actor his breakout role. Here's what she said:

I totally fought for Channing [to get cast in] that movie because he wasn't famous yet. He'd just done a Mountain Dew commercial and I was like, 'This guy's a star --- every girl will love him!' But [the producers] were like, 'He's so much older than all of you!' And I was like, 'It doesn't matter! Trust me!'

The trust certainly paid off! Since Channing Tatum starred in She's the Man, he's been busy on movie set after movie set. In the teen movie based on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Tatum was a 26-year-old next to a 20-year-old Amanda Bynes, but let's face it, most teen roles are given to actors well into their twenties anyway. Considering the star power of Tatum, Bynes wasn't likely the only one eyeing him for a lead role, but who knows, maybe it was his big break?

Due to her time out of the spotlight due to her past struggles with substance abuse and mental health, it's been a while since Amanda Bynes has spoken out about her past acting career. In a recent buzz-worthy interview with Paper Magazine, Bynes talked about her time on She's the Man along with detailing her past struggles. In the 2006 rom-com, her character dresses as a boy to live out her dream to play soccer. Her roommate is Channing Tatum's character, who she falls for after quite the complicated web of identity mix-ups.

In her unfiltered interview, Amanda Bynes opened up about how she went into a depression after starring in She's the Man because she didn't like how she looked like as a boy in the film. The film came at a time when Bynes was a popular up-and-coming actress -- she had just starred in What a Girl Wants and was still famous for her Nickelodeon television series The Amanda Show.

After She's the Man, Amanda Bynes starred in some big hits such as 2007's Hairspray and 2010's Easy A, but her personal struggles and very public downfall in 2013 led her in a different direction. Bynes has picked herself up; she said she's been sober for almost four years and is currently studying fashion in Los Angeles.

So while She's the Man was a breakout moment for Channing Tatum, it was one of Amanda Bynes few acting projects. Tatum will return as the voice of Superman in The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part and is said to be playing Marvel's Gambit, coming in 2020. Bynes said she hopes to one day return to the business. so maybe her honest interview signals a potential comeback.

Channing Tatum wants Amanda Bynes to know he appreciates her for believing in him.. While speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the Magic Mike Live premiere in London on Wednesday (November 28), Tatum said he has nothing but respect for the 32-year-old actress, whose latest Paper magazine profile revealed she fought to have him cast in his breakout role in 2006's She's The Man.

Looks Like Rush Hour 4 Is Definitely Happening

Looks Like Rush Hour 4 Is Definitely Happening

Perhaps it's our love for nostalgia or just Hollywood's current obsession with recognizable brands, but either way, many long dormant buddy cop franchises are revving up for possible comebacks. First it was Lethal Weapon, then it was 48 Hrs., then Bad Boys and now Rush Hour may be headed back to the big screen. The potential returns of old franchises can often be taken with a grain of salt, as they frequently never come to fruition or languish in the imagination or development hell. But it appears that Rush Hour 4 shall be a real thing, at least according to star Chris Tucker, who had this to say:

It's happening. This is gonna be the rush of all rushes. Jackie is ready and we want to do this so that people don't ever forget it.

Well, that's certainly encouraging and it sounds like the franchise could be returning to close things out with a bang. Speaking to ESPN's The Undefeated The Plug podcast, Chris Tucker seems excited about returning to the successful and fan favorite action-comedy franchise. He also said that they are working on it now, so it's possible that Rush Hour 4 may hit theater screens sooner than we expect if the ball is already rolling. Part of what makes the actor's comments so encouraging is that we had previously heard that Chris Tucker's approval and agreement to be a part of the project was the final obstacle to Rush Hour 4 actually becoming a reality. Jackie Chan had said that they finally had a script worth making and if Chris Tucker signed on the filming could possibly start this year. The action-comedy genre misses more than it hits, so hopefully if everyone involved waited this long for a good script that bodes well for Rush Hour 4. The franchise has been commercially successful but, after the original, critical reception went downhill drastically.

The buddy cop formula is a huge crowd-pleaser when done well and people have a lot of fond memories of this franchise. As such, CBS tried to capitalize on this name value with a Rush Hour TV series a few years back. I can't attest to the quality of the show, although I have my suspicions, as it was cancelled after one season. The big difference is that part of what makes beloved buddy cop movies so memorable is the chemistry between the lead actors. Thus, without Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, the series couldn't possibly live up to fan expectations. With Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker back on board as Lee and Carter for Rush Hour 4, audiences should expect that same dynamic from the first three films, with (hopefully) some fresh ideas this time around. The buddy cop and action-comedy genres are evergreen and so long as each new entry has two compatible leads and does something fun and new, it should find an audience.

We now patiently await the inevitable news of a Tango & Cash 2. For all the latest in movie news and understanding the words that are coming out of my mouth, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.
