The Russo Brothers Share Their Favorite Character Arc in the MCU

The Russo Brothers Share Their Favorite Character Arc in the MCU
Captain America in Age of Ultron

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is on the edge of a precipice, with just days left before Avengers: Endgame finally arrives in theaters. The Russo Brothers will bring Phase Three of the MCU to an end, and the stakes could not be higher. Given the state of the shared universe at the end of Infinity War, fans have spent the last year theorizing about what could come next, now that Thanos wiped out half of all life.

Our questions will be answered shortly, as Endgame is just days away from arriving in theaters. The upcoming blockbuster will end the MCU as we know it, and wrap up the characters arcs from many of the OG Avengers. CinemaBlend's Jeff McCobb recently spoke with The Russo Brothers, and asked the co-directors about their favorite arc in the MCU. Joe Russo piped in first, saying:

Cap obviously because we spent so much time with him. And he has gone on a very extreme journey, from First Avenger to Infinity War. He went from a patriot to an insurgent, that’s a very complicated arc.

This answer shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The Russo Brothers joined the MCU in Captain America: Winter Soldier, which is widely considered one of the shared universe's best outings. Since then, they became the architects of Phase Three, and utilized the title character in three more movies, including Endgame.

Joe Russo's comment does make some valid points, as moviegoers have watched Steve Rogers have a pretty unbelievable journey throughout the last eight years. Captain America's story spans decades, and featured him doing an about-face in regards to his belief system. So while the other Avengers have grown before our eyes, Cap arguably had the most seismic change this character.

In the same conversation with CinemaBlend at CinemaCon 2019, Anthony Russo echoed his brother's sentiments, agreeing that Captain America was their favorite. He said,

I would have to say Cap. It’s just, we’ve been so focused on that character. He was our access point to the MCU as storytellers. Having been born, and grown up, and come of age during World War II. Having that all torn away from you, and waking up 70 years later. It’s a really profound journey that character’s been on. A lot of hardship. And a lot of nobility in his heart. And we’ve had a lot of fun trying to figure that character out over the years.

Once again, the Russo Brothers show that they're great at working together. The co-directors have shared a singular vision for the MCU, and done the impossible with their work on large ensemble projects like Captain America: Civil War. And through it all, Chris Evans' signature character has been their favorite Avenger to see onscreen.

You can't blame The Russo Brothers for having some favoritism, as the Captain America franchise was how they were able to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and eventually rose to the top of the creative ladder. They brought a surprising amount of realism and grit to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, including stunning action sequences and plot twists that rocked the shared universe to its core.

Captain America: Civil War is another great feat, and their second go in the MCU. But rather than focusing solely on Steve Rogers, The Russo Brothers were given the challenge of bringing in most of MCU's heroes to the playing field. It wasn't an easy task, and moviegoers had some trepidations going into theaters. But the directors juggled a big cast, and fractured The Avengers as we know them.

You can check out our conversation with The Russo Brothers at CinemaCon 2019 below.

From the interview above, you can really see how much Captain America means to Joe and Anthony Russo. And while they've gotten to know all the major Marvel characters with their work on Civil War and the Avengers movies, Steve Rogers continues to be their favorite arc in the shared universe.

While plenty of moviegoers have their favorite Avenger, you can't deny the validity of The Russo Brothers' points. Just look at how his journey compares to other major Marvel characters. Tony Stark went from billionaire playboy to a superheroic leader, but he hasn't changed that much since the first Iron Man movie ended. Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow continues to be a mystery, although that might change when her solo outing finally arrives. And while Thor is more responsible and humble, he's still largely the same God of Thunder we met in his first flick.

The Russo Brothers might have a favorite in Captain America, but they've got plenty of character arcs to wrap up when Avengers: Endgame arrives next week. Many of the original Avengers actors are coming to the end of their contracts, so fans may finally bid goodbye to folks like Cap, Iron Man, and Thor. And given the high stakes after Thanos' snap of death (aka The Decimation), it seems likely that at least one of those icons will end up being killed off.

In addition to ending certain character arcs, The Russo Brothers also have the responsibility of opening up narrative possibilities. While Marvel Studios hasn't revealed their plans for Phase Four yet, the fandom is expecting quite a few sequels over the next few years. But with Black Panther, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians all faded to dust as a result of Thanos' victory, the future is currently unclear.

Most moviegoers assume that the dusted heroes will somehow be resurrected throughout the course of Avengers: Endgame. Exactly how that'll be done is unclear, but it seems like Phase Four depends on it. Because unless the future is filled with prequels, it doesn't seem like the MCU can continue on any other way.

Answers should finally come once Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26th. In the meantime, fill out CinemaBlend's Endgame death pool, and check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Kevin Feige Explains What’s Happening With The Skrulls After Captain Marvel

Kevin Feige Explains What’s Happening With The Skrulls After Captain Marvel

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains massive spoilers for Captain Marvel. If you have not yet seen the film, read on at your own risk!

There are many surprises featured within the runtime of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Captain Marvel, but there is nothing more shocking than the turn that the film makes with the Skrulls. Given the history of the shapeshifting aliens in the pages of Marvel Comics, it was widely assumed going in that they would be the antagonists of the new blockbuster, but everything changes about half way through the film when it’s revealed that Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos and his compatriots are seeking home and security – not invasion and war.

Because of this significant move, there has been a lot of exciting chatter about what the future may hold for the Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Specifically, does this mean that all Skrulls are good, and simply at the mercy of the all-powerful Kree? Fortunately, I recently had the chance to discuss that topic with the man who holds all of the answers: Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

I sat down with the filmmaker/executive one-on-one during the Los Angeles press day for Captain Marvel, and I wasted zero time diving into spoiler territory and asking about the role of the Skrulls in the film as my first question. Acknowledging that the green, pointy-eared extraterrestrials have basically always been “bad guys” in the comics, I inquired about how the movie chose to approach them. Feige explained that it was a concept that was developed early in the creative process with the intention of fans who think they have everything figured out even before they’ve sat down to watch the film. He explained,

I think subverting expectations is always fun, and I think breathing reality and life and emotion and pathos into characters you wouldn't expect to have those attributes is also fun, and a good way of storytelling... I think '90s and Fury, of course, Carol Danvers, of course the Kelly Sue [DeConnick] run, and Goose, sort of came together, and then the notion of [good Skrulls]. Because this whole movie is about who can be a hero. Who should be a hero? What does a hero look like? What does it mean to be a hero? And it felt like additive to that theme to do what we did with Talos. And Ben Mendelsohn's the greatest.

In Captain Marvel, the Skrulls definitely do appear to be the villains for the first half of the story – ambushing and capturing Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) during a Starforce mission, and then chasing her to Earth after her escape. She eventually learns the truth about Talos and his crew, however, understanding that they used to work directly with Mar-Vell (Annette Bening), a Kree living on Earth developing a light speed engine with the hope of helping the Skrulls establish a new homeworld. After that point, the objective totally changes for the heroine, and Carol finds herself teaming with the shapeshifters and on a quest to end an intergalactic war.

As noted by Kevin Feige, the change-up works because you never see “Good Skrulls” coming, but on a larger level it was also stressed that a big part of the move was disrupting generalization and absolutes. Part of any conflict is the fact that there are shades of grey, and there are always going to be members of opposing forces with philosophies and ideologies that both compare and contrast in surprising ways. The presence of the Skrulls in Captain Marvel is a perfect example, as while Talos and his crew are just looking for safety, Feige also explained there are plenty out there that don’t have the same kind of peaceful intentions and goals:

People have asked, 'Oh, so are they all good?' And I'm like, 'Is anybody all good?' So that's part of becoming dimensionalized characters. [The capacity for them to be bad is still very much out there], as it is - for better, for worse - for all of us.

So while the end of the blockbuster has Carol Danvers supporting a group that definitely deserves help, you shouldn’t count out the possibility that we still could see some nefarious Skrull plots play out in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For example, there has been a lot of speculation about potentially one day seeing an adaptation of the 2008 comic book crossover arc Secret Invasion, and there is nothing in Captain Marvel that disrupts the idea of that happening one day. There is also the fact that the Fantastic Four will soon be a part of the franchise, thanks to the still-developing Disney-Fox merger, and that is a team that has done a whole lot of clashing with the Skrulls over the last 60 years (including fights with the Super-Skrull, who is a Skrull imbued with the powers of all the members of the Fantastic Four).

Of course, for right now the future of the Skrulls is as mysterious as any aspect of the developing Marvel Cinematic Universe, with everything happening past the release of Jon Watt’s Spider-Man: Far From Home this summer being maintained as a question mark. That being said, you can be sure that there will be fans globally excited to see more of the paranoia-inducing invaders, and it’s hard to imagine Marvel Studios only using them for this one blockbuster and then never utilizing them ever again.

For now, audiences everywhere can still enjoy the first ever big screen appearance of the Skrulls, as Captain Marvel is now playing in theaters worldwide – starring not only the aforementioned Brie Larson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Annette Bening, but also Samuel L. Jackson, Lashana Lynch, Clark Gregg, Jude Law, Djimon Hounsou, and Lee Pace. And be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend, as we still have plenty more coming from my sit down with Kevin Feige, discussing not only the new blockbuster, but also looking ahead to what’s in the future of his franchise. So stay tuned!

Why Daniel Radcliffe Probably Wont See Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

Why Daniel Radcliffe Probably Wont See Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

Although the Wizarding World is being expanded upon through the Fantastic Beasts film series, the Harry Potter era of the franchise ended in 2011 with the release of The Deathly Hallows Part 2. Well, on the big screen, that is. But in June 2016, the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered, and it's been playing on Broadway since this past April. However, if you're wondering if Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, has see the play, not only has he not, it's unlikely he ever will. Radcliffe explained his reasoning for avoiding The Cursed Child thusly:

I'm probably not going to see it. I don't have any plans to. Not because I think it would throw me into some sort of existential crisis of, like, 'Oh, is that what happened?' But more so that I just feel like it would not be a relaxing evening at the theater. I feel like I would be being watched for my reaction, and maybe that is completely conceited and egotistical and people wouldn't care, but I do feel like if I was just surrounded by Harry Potter fans, I feel like it would be a little odd.

While Daniel Radcliffe is a talented actor and has starred in movies like Swiss Army Man, Now You See Me 2 and Jungle in recent years, it's safe to say he'll always be best known for playing The Boy Who Lived in all eight Harry Potter movies. Radcliffe already has to deal with fans approaching him a lot over the role, so when it comes to seeing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, he'd feel self-conscious about people studying him for his reaction to the play. Oh well, at least he can always just read the play to see what happens to Harry and the gang in the future.

During Daniel Radcliffe's appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the eponymous host also asked about if the actor considered donning a disguise so that he could watch Harry Potter and the Cursed Child incognito. Radcliffe responded that if a disguise stops working, then "you're just a dude who wore a disguise." He then recalled a bad experience wearing a disguise at a public event with his Harry Potter costar, Rupert Grint, a.k.a. Ron Weasley. Radcliffe said:

There was one year where me and Rupert Grint were at Redding Music Festival together, and like for whatever reason 'cause we were young, cool and edgy, we had access to old World War II gas masks. So we put them on and we're running around the concert, and then it got really hot very quickly, and it was very hard to breathe in them, so we just took them off. And then everybody went from, 'Who are those two idiots in gas masks?' to 'Oh, look who that is.' It was not a good feeling, so that swore me off disguises.

Maybe if there was a way for Daniel Radcliffe to watch a private performance of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, then he could finally see what all the fuss is about, though I doubt even Radcliffe has that much pull to make such a performance happen. Still, if there's one other thing we can take away from this, it's that you shouldn't ever be on the lookout for Daniel Radcliffe wearing a fake mustache, wig or anything along those lines to blend into a crowd.

If a cinematic adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ever gets the green light, we here at CinemaBlend will be sure to inform you about it. For now, you can get your Wizarding World fix by seeing Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in theaters now.

Rian Johnson Doesn’t Mind If Star Wars: Episode IX Retcons The Last Jedi

Rian Johnson Doesn’t Mind If Star Wars: Episode IX Retcons The Last Jedi
Daisy Ridley as Rey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Wherever you fall on Star Wars: The Last Jedi reception scale, there’s no question that it’s one of the most divisive films in the Star Wars franchises, if not at the top of the list. Building off what J.J. Abrams established in The Force Awakens, Rian Johnson was brought in to write and direct The Last Jedi, and many of his creative choices were met by controversy by portions of the Star Wars fanbase. With Abrams now overseeing Star Wars: Episode IX, Johnson is okay if this next movie ends up retconning portions of The Last Jedi, specifically Rey’s parentage.

One of the big questions regarding Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was who her parents were. Upon touching Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber at Maz Kanata’s cantina, Rey was bombarded by a flurry of Force visions, one of which showed her being left on Jakku as a child, and her family was never shown. For the next two years, fans wondered about the secrets of Rey’s past, like if she was related to the Skywalker family. Then came Star Wars: The Last Jedi, during which Kylo Ren told Rey to admit what she knew along: that her parents were “nobody,” with Ren saying that they were “filthy junk traders” who sold her for drinking money and were long dead in a pauper’s grave on Jakku.

Well, this plot twist was among the many aspects of Star Wars: The Last Jedi that was met with mixed reactions, and some fans have questioned if J.J. Abrams will retcon this reveal in Star Wars: Episode IX and make Rey’s parents significant people. That remains to be seen, and Rian Johnson has largely remained out of the loop on Episode IX’s development, only having a couple of conversations with Abrams. However, when asked by MTV News if he’d be okay with Abrams retconning the lineage of Rey’s parents in Episode IX, Johnson responded:

I want to let go of all my expectations. I want to sit back. I want to be entertained. I want to be surprised. I want to be thrilled. I want [J.J. Abrams] to do stuff I wasn’t expecting him to do and just go along for the ride. For me, that’s why I go to the movies, you know?

Rey’s parents being turned from nobodies to important individuals would certainly qualify as a surprise. Shortly after Star Wars: The Last Jedi came out, Rian Johnson revealed that the reason he went that direction with Rey’s family was because every other idea he came up with her parents’ identities just didn’t work for him. This creative choice was also a sharp contrast from what we’ve seen from the Skywalker family over the years, with Rey’s impressive Force powers existing for some reason other than having a notable genealogy. That’s assuming, of course, that this sticks for Episode IX. After all, this is a franchise known for its surprises, and it wouldn’t be the first time someone learned that what they’d been told about their family was false.

No doubt changing Rey’s parents would please a portion of the Star Wars fanbase, although I do hope that Star Wars: Episode IX doesn’t go all out on retconning every element of Star Wars: The Last Jedi that was deemed controversial. At the very least, if Rey’s parents were actually identified and even declared to still be alive, she would at least have the opportunity to reunite with them, something she was desperate to do in The Force Awakens. On the other hand, The Last Jedi was about Rey proving her self-worth and skill, and how she didn’t need a notable family line to become a Jedi/Resistance hero, so reversing all that undercuts the message.

In any case, Rian Johnson’s time with this era of Star Wars movies is done, but once he’s finished making Knives Out, he’ll shift to his own Star Wars trilogy, which will focus on new characters and explore other corners of the galaxy far, far away. As far as Episode IX is concerned, he’ll watch it just as a normal fan would (though I suspect he’ll get to attend one of the earliest screenings), and if J.J. Abrams has retconned anything that Johnson set up in The Last Jedi, Johnson will be okay with it so long as he’s entertained and thrilled.

In addition to being the final installment of the current Star Wars trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IX will also be the final chapter of the entire Skywalker Saga, so there’s a lot of plates this movie has to spin. The only official plot detail revealed so far is that it will take place one year after The Last Jedi, which ended with The Resistance nearly being wiped out by The First Order, but the few survivors, including Rey, managing to escape to fight another day. Along with a swarm of familiar faces returning for Episode IX, including Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill and, for his first Star Wars movie appearance in nearly 40 years, Billy Dee Williams, the cast also includes newcomers like Keri Russell, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant and Dominic Monaghan.

While there’s always the chance that Daisy Ridley and the other stars of the current Star Wars trilogy could perhaps return to this franchise several decades down the line, just like Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford did, since Episode IX is wrapping up the Skywalker saga, that means fans should go in assuming this will be the last time we see all these characters. Here’s hoping then that each of their stories concludes in a satisfactory manner, and that if Rey’s background is indeed altered, it at least blends nicely with her overall narrative arc and doesn’t come off as a haphazard switch meant to please folks who were angered by the reveal in The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be released in theaters on December 20. As for what else is hitting the silver screen in the near future, look through our 2019 release schedule for that information, and Star Wars fans shouldn’t forget that The Mandalorian will also premiere on Disney+ in the near future, maybe even by the end of the year.

J.K. Simmons Is Still Hoping To Play Commissioner Gordon Again

J.K. Simmons Is Still Hoping To Play Commissioner Gordon Again
Commissioner Gordon in Justice League

The DC live-action universe has had a fascinating tenure in theaters, full of both highs and lows. Warner Bros. seems to have recovered nicely, surfing on the success Aquaman and the anticipation for Shazam! But it wasn't long ago that things were looking bleak, as Batman v Superman and Justice League failed to perform critically. The latter was also a box office disappointment, which had the potential to put the entire shared universe in jeopardy.

Ultimately, the DCEU pivoted away from serialized storytelling, allowing filmmakers to have more capsulated and controlled projects. Ben Affleck has departed his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman, with Matt Reeves needing to recast for his long developing movie, The Batman. But what does that mean for J.K. Simmons' Commissioner Gordon? Simmons had a brief role in Justice League, which was meant to expand before things changed at the studio. But the Oscar-winning actor still wants to play the character again, recently saying:

I wish I had something to offer, although, if I actually did know more than I do, they probably would shoot me if I told you. I know nothing. I know that I signed up to do three movies, potentially, and I hope there are gonna be two more. It has been in and around and through, whether it be Batman or Justice League or another Suicide Squad, or where Commissioner Gordon might end up appearing again, I'm open to it. I'm not sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring in the meantime, but I hope there's more of that in the future.

Is anyone else's FOMO going through the roof? J.K. Simmons has the interest and contract to bring him back to the role of Commissioner Gordon, although it's unclear if he'll be asked to return for a future installment in the DC live-action universe. Fingers crossed.

J.K. Simmons' comments to ET should excite the hardcore DC fans out there, as well as moviegoers who appreciate his small role in Justice League. Gordon is one of Batman's most loyal allies, and it's a character that's been adapted into live-action a number of times, including Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. Simmons has attitude, talent, and massive biceps to play the Gotham City lawman, so hopefully Warner Bros. decides to bring him back for a larger role in the future.

Justice League had a rocky road to theaters. Zack Snyder departed during filming due to a family tragedy, leading Joss Whedon to step in and complete the project. But their conflicting visions resulted in a film that failed to resonate with audiences, and ultimately underperformed at the box office. Ben Affleck ultimately dropped out of the director's chair and eventually the role of the protagonist in the Batman solo movie, which J.K. Simmons was expected to appear in.

The Batman has sat in development hell, but Matt Reeves is still attached as director, and occasionally updates the public on its writing process. In fact, The Batman even has a tentative release date in June of 2021. But production is going to have to amp up, including the recasting of Batman, and the assembling of his rogues gallery. Let's just hope that J.K. Simmons will be included as Commissioner Gordon, and get another go at the beloved supporting character.

J.K. Simmons might not have had an especially meaty role in Justice League, but it was an aspect to the ill-fated blockbuster that audiences seem to have responded to. Simmons has considerable star power, and he seemed like an inspiring choice to take the mantle of Commissioner Gordon. Plus, take a look at that guy's mustache. He played Gordon with humor and heart, and was able to roll with the punches once The League assembled.

Of course, comic book fans know and love J.K. Simmons from his tenure as J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Saimi's Spider-Man trilogy. He was appropriately campy and despicable, with a performance that was ripped straight from the page. Moviegoers delighted to see his cigar-chomping egomaniac, especially when the comedic supporting character was put into the heart of the superhero drama.

Getting another few superhero movies from J.K. Simmons was a dream for the fandom, but it looks like his future in the DC live-action universe is still unclear. As Simmons said, he's contracted for another two appearances in the franchise, and hasn't the slightest idea if/when that could happen. It's also entirely possible that the actor could be let go from his contract, and hang up Gordon's hat before he could really get a feel for it.

The recasting of Bruce Wayne in The Batman is one factor that may be preventing J.K. Simmons from appearing in Matt Reeves' developing blockbuster. Reeves is reportedly basing his story on a younger version of Bruce Wayne, who is greener than the jaded and experienced version Ben Affleck brought to theaters. If we're getting a younger Batman, then one would think a younger Jim Gordon may be a supporting character. If only because Simmons' involvement in both timelines would be a confusing.

But with the DC universe branching out with director-driven projects, perhaps Matt Reeves will ignore the rules and bring in J.K. Simmons as planned. He's an extremely accomplished actor, and recently won the Oscar for his performance in Whiplash. Since Warner Bros. has him contracted for two more potential appearances, it seems foolish to move on to another actor. But it all depends on what Reeves vision is, and if The Batman ever finally makes it to theaters.

If J.K. Simmons isn't included in The Batman, he could potentially pop up in another DC project set in the present. Gotham City is becoming a major setting in the shared universe with projects like Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). If the Gotham City Sirens movie also gets off the ground, that might be the perfect time to bring Commissioner Gordon back onto the silver screen. With Renee Montoya appearing in Birds of Prey, the GCPD could potentially become a larger presence in the universe as well.

The Batman is currently set to arrive in theaters on June 25th, 2021. In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Robert Downey Jr. Shares Video Of Tony’s Emotional Endgame Reunion

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame!

It's been three weeks since Avengers: Endgame finally arrived in theaters, and conversation about the blockbuster is showing no signs of slowing down. The Russo Brothers crammed a ton of exciting content into the movie, so each frame has been dissected and discussed by the rabid fanbase. Endgame succeeded in many ways, but it really did justice to OG Avengers like Tony Stark.

Iron Man was given quite the arc in Avengers: Endgame, one that was deeply reflective on everything he'd gained and lost since Thanos snapped his fingers and wiped out half of all life. After the time jump, Tony was shown living a happy life with Pepper Potts and their daughter Morgan. But he was haunted by his failures, especially Peter Parker's dusting during Infinity War. Iron Man's eventual reunion with Spider-Man was super emotional, and now Robert Downey Jr. has shared a video filming that scene. Check it out below.

I'm not crying, you're crying. It looks like Tony and Peter's brief scene on the battlefield went through some variations, including different lines of dialogue. And they're likely all emotional gut punches.

This video comes to us from Robert Downey Jr's official Instagram page. With the spoiler ban for Endgame officially lifted by the Russo Brothers, the film's cast and crew has been able to get more chatty about their experience. Plenty of actors have been posting footage from Endgame's set, revealing potentially illegal videos they took working on the massive blockbuster.

In the above clip, you can see Robert Downey Jr. working alongside Tom Holland. The latter actor is wearing his signature motion capture pajamas, and strikes a pose before limping onto the set and catching up with his onscreen Marvel mentor. Those who remember the emotional reunion in Avengers: Endgame will notice that the actors are saying different lines. It almost seems improvised, so perhaps they were given freedom to play, and not necessarily parrot the same words from the script.

Personally, I love how Peter asked Tony what all the "grey stuff" in his beard was. RDJ brilliantly delivers his response, revealing they're just grey hairs. It's a great comedic beat, although the theatrical cut included Peter discussing his return from the dead, and Doctor Strange's magical abilities.

Another change in the scene was how Tony embraced his superheroic protegee. He hugs Peter for much longer than what we saw in Avengers: Endgame, even giving the young hero a kiss on the cheek in the process. Peter and Tony's relationship with hugging has spanned multiple movies, as their connection grew deeper in Spider-Man: Far From Home and Avengers: Infinity War.

Peter Parker's relationship with Tony should be a major plot line in Spider-Man: Far From Home, as the new trailer teased a protagonist that was deeply in mourning. The adventure will also pair Peter with Nick Fury, Maria Hill and Happy Hogan, allowing RDJ's signature character to still have a presence, despite his epic death scene.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters now, and Spider-Man: Far From Home will follow suit on July 2nd. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Its Crazy Tom Cruise Didnt Die Filming This Mission: Impossible Stunt

Its Crazy Tom Cruise Didnt Die Filming This Mission: Impossible Stunt

We haven't had a memorable skydiving stunt in an action movie -- a truly remarkable and eye-popping skydive stunt -- since Kathryn Bigelow sent Keanu Reeves after Patrick Swayze without a parachute in the brilliant bro-thriller Point Break. Well, it looks like that will change in July once Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise unleash Mission: Impossible -- Fallout on the world. At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Cruise and the director he lovingly refers to as McQ took to the stage and walked audiences through a mid-air stunt that they have concocted for the sequel... one that, of course, Cruise had to perform himself to make sure they maintained authenticity.

And as I watched, I truly was shocked that Tom Cruise didn't kill himself filming this stunt for Mission: Impossible -- Fallout.

Here's the set up. It's a high-altitude, low-window jump from a massive plane that's traveling nearly 200 mph. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is on mission with Henry Cavill's character, CIA agent August Walker. The scene is set at sunset over the city of Paris, meaning they only had three minutes of natural light in which to capture the scene each time they attempted it. (And they attempted it more than 100 times.) The two men argue as Ethan plans to change the plan at the last minute. Only, Walker doesn't want to wait. He pulls Ethan's oxygen line out then makes the jump himself. Ethan has to follow. But because this is a Mission movie, and the stakes need to be even higher than that, Christopher McQuarrie explained:

As Ethan is getting ready to jump out of the plane, because we like to add a complication or two, through the opened gate [Ethan] sees that there's a massive lightning storm over the city they're supposed to be diving into.

That's right. Tom Cruise and Henry Cavill actually jumped out of this very real, and very fast moving plane, and then had to figure out a way to simulate diving through a lightning storm en route to the city of Paris. Spoiler warning: The men get hit by lighting.

Now, Christopher McQuarrie emphasized that Tom Cruise didn't actually get hit by lightning... and the fact that he has to say this, alone, speaks to Cruise's insane commitment to the stunt. McQuarrie spent a lot of the panel explaining just how much training had to go into figuring out jumpsuits and a camera rig that would capture Tom Cruise in midair so that it was ALWAYS clear that this was, indeed, Cruise in the suit and not some stunt man filling in for the A-lister.

Also, to add another impossible wrinkle, in order to get the footage that McQ wants of Ethan tumbling from the plane, a cameraman had to be trained to jump out before Tom Cruise did, and freefall backwards. You read that correctly. We saw, eventually, that McQ got the camera operator to place the rig on his head. And jump out of this rapidly moving plane. And capture Tom Cruise in midair. As the actor explained:

So you can understand why people tell us, 'There's no way you are going to be able to do this. This is not going to happen.' One take a night. That's why it took a year to figure out. We actually had to hire the camera operator, train him how to shoot on film and not just capture an image.

The Mission: Impossible - Fallout scene is spectacular. We saw raw footage of three jumps that they used to get what will eventually look like one long, seamless shot. They involve Ethan leaving the plane to pursue Walker, Ethan getting hit by lighting and sending him into a freefall spin, then Ethan regaining his composure and catching up with Walker midair to reconnect the unconscious agent's oxygen hose and, eventually, pull his parachute before both agents splat down on a Paris street.

It looks remarkable! It looks impossible. And I still can't believe that Tom Cruise did all of this, and survived. As Simon Pegg said from the stage:

The difference between us watching Tom do those stunts to when you watch him do them is that you know he lived. It is a daily stress going to work with him because you don't know if you are going to see him tomorrow. And that can be scary!

See the sequence for yourself when Mission: Impossible -- Fallout hits theaters on July 27.
