Chris Hemsworth Talks Creating A Different Thor For Avengers: Endgame

Chris Hemsworth Talks Creating A Different Thor For Avengers: Endgame
Chris Hemsworth as Thor

Of all of the Avengers, it's possible no character has gone through quite as many changes as Thor. He's found and lost loves. He's lost and regained eyeballs. He's learned things about the father he idolized he never would have expected. Needless to say, in Avengers: Endgame a film that we knew was going to change the status quo of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor continues to change and Chris Hemsworth says he worked closely with directors Joe and Anthony Russo to figure out just what they could do to change things up in the new film. According to Hemsworth...

They were on board and we sat for many hours and days and discussed kind of how far we could push it and what we could do different. It was great that was welcomed, you know, that kind of [conversation].

Of course, since Hemsworth's comments with USA Today came before the premiere, the actor wasn't talking about exactly what sort of changes took place (and we won't either until further down).

The first Thor movie was directed by Kenneth Branagh, and Branagh's Shakespearean background comes through quite clearly. Thar, and most of the rest of the Asgardians, speak formally and carry themselves with a strong feeling of self-importance. However, as Thor continues to interact with humanity throughout The Avengers movies and the Thor sequel, he becomes a bit more, well, relaxed. This hits an extreme with Thor: Ragnarok, where Thor has evolved into a very different character. He uses his wit as well as his hammer as a weapon.

While other MCU characters have certainly had interesting arcs, nobody's has been quite like Thor's. He started as a egotistical brat who assumed he would be king, to becoming a reluctant leader who made one of the most difficult choices imaginable when he sacrificed his home in order to save his people.

This seems to largely be because Hemsworth himself wanted to see these changes. He's spoken about being somewhat tired of Thor before Ragnarok, so he was probably quite excited about what else he could do with the character in the new movie to continue to keep things interesting for him.

From here, we're getting into Avengers: Endgame SPOILERS*_,*_ so turn back if you haven't yet seen the movie. Here's a picture of Thor flexing for his earthling roommate to keep you entertained.

When Avengers: Endgame makes its five-year time jump into the future, we see that Thor is having a particularly hard time dealing with the loss. As the man who came closest to stopping it all, Thor blames himself, and he's really let himself go as a result. Tony Stark at one point calls him "Lebowski" and it's almost too perfect a nickname.

Thor has something of a new attitude to go with his new physique as well. His confidence is gone and he's even more laid back than we've seen him before. He's about as far from Branagh's Thor as it's possible to be. Chris Hemsworth and the Russos have certainly pushed the character quite far.

What this means for the future of the character, we don't know. While some Avengers stories have seemingly come to an end, his certainly looks to have more left to go.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters now.

Wait, Luke Skywalker May Have Had A Wife?

Wait, Luke Skywalker May Have Had A Wife?

A lot of time passed between the releases of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Stars Wars: The Last Jedi. While fans only saw a small portion of Luke Skywalker's life during The Last Jedi, he didn't just sit on an island for over 30 years. He lived a whole life that we didn't see, likely filled with adventure, drama, and, possibly, love. It turns out that Luke may have been married at some point in his life. The novelization of The Last Jedi reportedly features a line that claims Luke had a wife before the events of the blockbuster sequel.

There may be a line in the novelization of Star Wars: The Last Jedi that reveals Luke Skywalker had a wife at one point in his life. A picture of the first line from the book was posted to Reddit and reads "Luke Skywalker stood in the cooling sands of Tatooine, his wife by his side." Obviously, due to the source and the fact that the novel does not release until March 6, we have to treat this with a grain of salt, but it is still incredibly interesting all the same. It's also important to remember that this is an out of context line, and might not mean what it appears.

As fans of the Star Wars Expanded Universe may know, Luke was married to a woman named Mara Jade. Mara was an "Emperor's Hand" and served Emperor Palpatine. She attempted to kill Luke in revenge after he defeated the Emperor, but she was mostly prompted to do so by telepathic programming from Palpatine. Luke was able to free her and the two eventually fell in love, got married, and had a child named Ben Skywalker. Mara was one of the more popular characters from the Expanded Universe, but she's yet to make the transition into the current canon.

If this does turn out to be a real line from the novel, it raises several questions. For one, who is the mysterious wife? Mara Jade would obviously be the top contender but it could be a different character. We also have to wonder at what point Luke got married and what happened to his wife? There's no mention of her in The Last Jedi, but that makes sense considering Luke is a private person in the movie and he has no reason to tell Rey, a stranger, his life story. It would be pretty distracting if it were just an off the cuff remark that is never addressed again.

We also have to consider the fact that this line could be intentionally misleading. If you scroll further down into the Reddit thread, some comments say that this is just part of a dream sequence of what Luke's life could have been like had he not gone off to blow up the Death Star. That feels pretty in line with what Rian Johnson was doing in The Last Jedi. Doesn't mean he never fell in love or even had a different wife, but he's imagining what his life could have been like instead of living alone on an island sipping green milk straight from the...whatever that thing was.

The Star Wars: The Last Jedi novel is due to release on March 6, 2018, so we'll know for sure what's going on with Luke's wife after then.

The newest Star Wars book, Thrawn, gives the modern Disney canon its first longform novel about one of the most intriguing characters in the history of the Expanded Universe. While the book goes some way to fleshing out the character that most new fans will only know from Star Wars: Rebels , there's a lot of interesting backstory behind Grand

Why Are MCU Films So Obsessed With The Space Stone?

Why Are MCU Films So Obsessed With The Space Stone?
Red Skull Captain America Tesseract

Warning! The following contains SPOILERS for Captain Marvel**. Read at your own risk!**

All of the MCU's Infinity Stones are shown to have massive amounts of power, yet few are given the amount of screen time as one in particular. Disguised in a device known as the Tesseract, the Space Stone has again and again shown up as a subject of interest in various hero adventures. It's more than a coincidence at this point, and we have to ask why.

Because let's face it, the Space Stone feels like one of the least interesting stones to have when compared to all the other options. So why does Marvel Studios insist on updating fans on its whereabouts and continue to include it in various films? We have a few theories, all of which might explain why MCU films are so obsessed with the Space Stone.

To begin, let's dive into what the Space Stone is capable of. The stone grants the user the ability to create portals and the power to travel to various worlds and dimensions. It's also an insanely powerful energy source and has been used by different organizations over the years as a power supply when housed within the Tesseract. Its power is something only a select few can control, with grave consequences for the unworthy who try and yield it.

Yet some have had a certain degree of success wielding this artifact, and while the most recently shown version of one doing so was unconventional, we have to wonder if the Space Stone will end up vital to Carol Danvers. As seen in Captain Marvel, Carol's cosmic powers are largely derived from her absorbing of the Space Stone's energies back when she and Mar-Vell attempted to evade the Kree.

This is important to remember, as Carol was also seen holding the Tesseract and being able to withstand its immense energy without being harmed. In a hypothetical situation where Infinity Stones are being doled out, she appears to be capable of wielding the Space Stone and enhancing the powers she's obtained from it even further. Captain Marvel's already pretty damn strong, so what would she be capable of with the Space Stone?

That's a question Avengers: Endgame may answer, as the film's post-credit sequence showed Goose the "cat" coughing the Tesseract up. With the object chilling on top of Nick Fury's desk in 1995, maybe someone could travel back in time, snag it, and return it before anyone finds out it's no longer in the Flerken. It's possible the Avengers does just that, and gives it to Carol to up her power in a fight against Thanos.

Now, whether that would result in two Space Stones being in the present or it would erase Thanos ever obtaining the Space Stone to begin with remains to be seen. If it's the latter, Captain Marvel would almost certainly have a leg up on Thanos, and the Mad Titan's snap would, presumably, be unable to happen. Those details will come in time, but for now, the only person who has the Space Stone in the present time period is Thanos, as it's in the Infinity Gauntlet along with the other Infinity Stones.

Taking the Space Stone from Goose would arguably be easier than trying to obtain the stone during World War II or the Battle of New York. With time travel more or less confirmed for Avengers: Endgame, that post-credit sequence may have been a way of creating a quicker scenario for that stone to be obtained. Maybe Nick Fury even catches them taking it and Carol explains why and adds that he should never use that beeper until he turns to dust?

Wouldn't that be a neat way of resolving fan questions? With that said, it's possible Marvel Studios is so Space Stone-centric because it's vital not just to rounding out the future of Phase 3, but helping grow the MCU as it kicks off Phase 4. Plans for the next stage haven't been revealed yet, but there have already been rumors that the X-Men, Blade and more will be involved.

This has been seen as a problem by some, as incorporating the existing X-Men and Blade universes could be messy. Their universes haven't been as neatly executed or meticulously plotted out as the existing MCU, so including them leaves the potential for each franchise to mess up the Utopian Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Space Stone presents a way to fix that, of course, and could be Marvel Studios' trump card in keeping its universe united, but separate.

With the Space Stone, all Marvel properties can essentially exist in their own world and only be brought together when a screenwriter decides to. The X-Men can continue to have their own adventures completely separate from the rest of the MCU for the next decade, and then the Space Stone can be used to pull them from their dimension into the MCU for a action-packed adaptation of Avengers vs. X-Men.

The same is true with the Blade films, although one would think incorporating him into the MCU would be a bit easier than the X-Men franchise. With that said, the Space Stone may be how Marvel ties in its R-rated heroes, but keeps their violent and gory adventures from complicating the morals of their own universe. It sounds like a situation where Marvel Studios can have its cake and eat it too, and I like it.

Perhaps the Space Stone isn't about Carol or inter-dimensional travel, however, and it's just so convenient to continue to tell stories centered on it? After all, an unlimited energy source is valuable, so it's not surprising that it's changed hands a few times over the past few decades. Still, its frequent appearance in different places all over the MCU has to have some deeper meaning, right? Is this the story of how Nick Fury lost his eye all over again?

Most likely no, and while we don't have guaranteed answers behind why the Space Stone is so important, its constant appearance in MCU adventures strongly indicates there's some bigger plan for it in the near or distant future. The Infinity Stones can only be destroyed under very specific circumstances, so unless someone wills for them to be gone at the end of Avengers: Endgame, count on seeing them again as the franchise moves forward.

What comes beyond is really an afterthought at this point, as Marvel fans are ready to see Avengers: Endgame come Friday, April 26. CinemaBlend will keep movie lovers up to date on all relevant details in the meantime and continue to dissect the little things in MCU films some may casually overlook. For example, take a look at the great Pulp Fiction references that were in Captain Marvel.

Whoa, What's With Brightburn's Huge Second Weekend Drop?

Whoa, What's With Brightburn's Huge Second Weekend Drop?

What happened to Brightburn? Not only did it get lost in the shuffle of Memorial Day weekend, it just fell more than almost any other movie in its second weekend.

Brightburn ended its three-day opening weekend with $7.8 million, which placed it fifth on last week's box office chart, almost a million dollars above Booksmart. Fast-forward to Week 2, and the situation is reversed. Booksmart got a boost of 13 theaters, which isn't much, but it put it at 2,518 theaters and gave it an estimated $3,328,648 for this weekend.

Brightburn, on the other hand, didn't gain or lose any theaters, it still has more than Booksmart at 2,607. But it only made an estimated $2,315,000, which is a drop of -70.5%.

That's big.

There are other films lower on the chart with slightly bigger box office drops, per Box Office Mojo, but those films also lost hundreds or even a thousand screens from last week to now. That's not the case for Brightburn. That drop put Brightburn's per-screen average at just $888, which is pretty low.

Compare that to the $11,934 per-screen average for this weekend's box office leader, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, or even the $1,322 per-screen average of Booksmart. A Dog's Journey has a lower per-screen average at $621, but it also just lost 1,605 screens after being out for three weeks.

Brightburn is a smaller movie, made for a reported production budget around $6 million. In addition to the $14.2 million it has made at the domestic box office so far -- from across this past week, including Memorial Day Monday -- it has also made $10.5 million so far at the foreign box office. The total as of today is $24,712,552.

So Brightburn isn't likely to lose any money, it's just not a good sign for any potential sequels that fans seem to have lost interest so quickly.

Brightburn got middle-of-the-road reviews from critics and a mostly positive RT Audience Score of 68% so far, but that's from only 3,091 users. It actually got a pretty lame C+ CinemaScore from moviegoers polled on opening night. Usually those scores tend to be high, but when people are disappointed, they can grade low.

Brightburn got a lot of attention because of Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn, who is a producer of the film, which was written by his brother Brian Gunn and cousin Mark Gunn. David Yarovesky directed the movie. It also captured fans' imaginations that Brightburn took the Superman origin story and gave it a dark twist. Otherwise, Brightburn is just an indie horror film that found a small following but maybe not enough to continue this universe. We'll see.

Did you see Brightburn? If so, how would you grade it?

New Angry Birds 2 Trailer Has Birds And Pigs Teaming Up

New Angry Birds 2 Trailer Has Birds And Pigs Teaming Up

When it comes to Angry Birds, most people are familiar with the general premise: birds don't like pigs because they steal eggs, and so they aim to take the oinkers down by launching themselves with a slingshot. The bird vs. pig conflict is at the center of the whole thing, which is why it's a bit surprising to see them fighting on the same side in this new trailer for The Angry Birds Movie 2.

Written by Peter Ackerman (The Americans), and the feature directorial debut of Adventure Time and Camp Lazlo! writer Thurop Van Orman, The Angry Birds 2 seems to start with the famous aforementioned animosity still in place, but things start to change when the birds and pigs are united against a common enemy. It's not really made clear in this trailer, but it seems that this common enemy is a different race of birds who are tired of living on their frozen wasteland of an island.

Many of the actors from the original are coming back, including Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage, but there are also a ton of newcomers joining the fray, including Rachel Bloom, Leslie Jones, Sterling K. Brown, Awkwafina, and Eugenio Derbez.

The first Angry Birds Movie, released in 2016, didn't exactly get the warmest reception from critics, but a sequel was definitely inevitable. Young audiences ate it up, having already been hooked on the brand courtesy of the popular mobile game, and the result was major box office success. Made with a $73 million budget, the film crossed the century mark in America with a $107.5 million gross - but that total balloons to $352.3 million when you also include all of the cash flowing in from foreign territories.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 won't exactly be following in the path of its predecessor, which got a May release when it hit theaters, but there may be significant chance for the sequel to hit even bigger when it comes out this summer. It's one of the few major movies coming out in the latter half of August this year, and that could lead to a lot of tickets being sold as parents try and figure out what the hell they should do with their kids in the weeks leading up to the start of the new school year.

This trailer has some funny moments, and the cast is certainly spectacular, so we'll just have to wait and see if The Angry Birds Movie 2 can outpace its predecessor in multiple areas. Sony Pictures Animation definitely hasn't been shy about promoting it, as this is our second full trailer, and there are still four months to go before the thing hits theaters. Perhaps they are just riding high on confidence following their big Oscar win for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse last year.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 will be arriving in theaters on August 16th, and to see what else is coming up on the big screen in the months ahead, please check out our 2019 Movie Release Calendar.

Why Shazam! Reshot Mark Strong's Intro As Sivana, And How It Originally Looked

Why Shazam! Reshot Mark Strong's Intro As Sivana, And How It Originally Looked

Reshoots are pretty commonplace in filmmaking, especially for blockbusters. Big studio films are almost guaranteed to reserve a block of time for reshoots. Sometimes things change in the editing room and filmmakers decide they need to get the cameras back out. For example, that very same thing happened on Shazam! The fun superhero film reshot the intro scene for its villain, Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong), because the room he was in was a bit too sterile.

In Shazam!, Dr. Sivana is a man obsessed with breaking into the Rock of Eternity and freeing the Seven Deadly Sins, a group of demons who symbolize the worst traits in humanity. Technically, the first time we see Sivana is as a child in the opening minutes of the film, but the scene that was reshot was his intro as an adult.

The scene in question had Sivana overseeing the questioning of a person who visited the Rock of Eternity in the hopes that he could finally get a clue to return there. Originally, the room he was in was much more sterile with blank white walls, but director David F. Sandberg felt that this wasn't quite the right way to introduce his baddie.

Replying to a comment on Twitter, David F. Sandberg revealed that there wasn't enough extra footage to do a director's cut of Shazam! The footage on screen is exactly what he wanted and all of the unused footage is really just alternate takes of scenes in the film. As an example, he showed a pic of the original introduction for Sivana. It's still the same scene, it just takes place in a different room.

While I can't remember for the life of me what this conference room looked like in the actual movie, I think it was a good call to change the room. It's pretty boring looking, and while I'm sure it could have been spruced up in post-production, that wouldn't likely change much.

We don't know what else was changed in the film during reshoots, but maybe some of these alternate takes will be available on the digital and home release of Shazam! The movie has been enjoying a pretty healthy run at the box office, earning $322.8 million worldwide at the box office. That's pretty good for the first film in what is sure to be a franchise, and DC's hot streak still lives on.

If you missed out on Shazam! or just want to kill some time before Avengers: Endgame later this week, you can still catch the superhero film in theaters. For everything else DC has coming down the pipeline, here's our DC movie guide. If you'd like to know what else is coming this year to plan out all your upcoming theater trips, here's our 2019 movie release guide.

Charlie Says Trailer Debuts Matt Smith's Charles Manson

Charlie Says Trailer Debuts Matt Smith's Charles Manson

Is Matt Smith in Star Wars: Episode IX or isn’t he? I suppose we’ll have to wait until that film’s first trailer or its December release to know for sure, but in the meantime, the former Doctor Who star will definitely be showing up in Charlie Says, where he plays someone who unquestionably belongs to the dark side. Take a look below to see the trailer for Charlie Says and see the debut of Matt Smith’s Charles Manson.

Charles Manson doesn’t show up for almost a minute into this trailer, but his presence is felt from the start as we see some of what befell those who followed him into the darkness. When Matt Smith appears as the cult leader, he really looks the part: bearded, longhaired and charming, and along with Hannah Murray’s Leslie Van Houten, we see the appeal of what he’s selling and how he roped people in.

The kumbaya lovefest he is pitching bears quite the resemblance to Chris Hemsworth's character in Bad Times at the El Royale, so you can see from whom that film took its inspiration. That lovefest turns as the things Manson is saying begin to have seriously dark connotations. When Grace Van Dien’s Sharon Tate opens the door and Charles Manson is just standing there, Matt Smith, more known for his roles as good guys, gives off some seriously creepy vibes.

Matt Smith has a magnetic presence and that is crucial to this film that will explore both how Charles Manson convinced people to kill for him in the first place and the powerful hold he had on these women long after they were sent to prison for their crimes. He can’t just be a crazy creep, we have to be drawn in by the actor’s portrayal and see how he appealed to his followers and they wanted to believe in him.

The book The Long Prison Journey of Leslie van Houten: Life Beyond the Cult, written by Karlene Faith (here played by The Walking Dead’s Meritt Wever, serves as inspiration for Charlie Says. That gives this film an interesting perspective as it looks at these women who committed horrible crimes as victims themselves, who made excuses and rationalized their behavior as a result of Charles Manson’s manipulation and their loyalty to him.

We see that in this trailer, especially with Sosie Bacon's Patricia Krenwinkel clinging to something that captivated her not wanting to take responsibility or acknowledge the truth. Also, Hannah Murray looks to be giving quite the performance as Leslie Van Houten as she come to grips with the truth of what she did and who Charles Manson was years later.

Charlie Says comes from director Mary Harron who created one of the staples of the serial killer genre in American Psycho. Most recently Harron directed episodes of Netflix’s Alias Grace.

Since 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Manson murders, Charlie Says is just one of the cinematic looks at the notorious crimes that both puzzle and fascinate to this day. Actress Hilary Duff stars in The Haunting of Sharon Tate, due out April 5, and the second season of Netflix’s Mindhunter will also feature Charles Manson. In an interesting twist, the actor starring as the cult leader in Mindhunter, Damon Herriman, will also play Manson in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Charlie Says arrives in theaters on May 10 and on VOD a week later on May 17. Check out our 2019 release schedule to keep track of all the biggest movies headed your way this year.
