Marvel Has Given The First Three Phases Of The MCU An Epic Name

Marvel Has Given The First Three Phases Of The MCU An Epic Name
Avengers: Infinity War poster

In just over a month’s time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 3 will come to an end in Avengers: Endgame. More than closing out Phase 3 though, Endgame also puts a cap on the first eleven years of the MCU, a journey that consists of three Phases and twenty-one films. We’ve been told that Avengers: Endgame represents a culmination; the end of the book and narrative that began with Iron Man. Now, as we race towards its climactic conclusion, we finally know what it’s called. And it is epic.

According to Empire Magazine, Kevin Feige has revealed that the first three phases of the MCU are called The Infinity Saga.

Yup, that is an appropriately epic and fitting name for the 21-film journey we have been on since 2008. It’s a super cool name that is going to look awesome emblazoned on a massive and expensive Blu-ray box set one day. Considering that we didn’t even know that these first three phases would have a specific name (think of all the speculation we missed out on!) beyond just Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3, it is a pleasant surprise as well.

Marvel has clearly taken a page out of corporate brother Lucasfilm’s book with this name. Like ‘The Skywalker Saga’, the word ‘saga’ just conveys an extra level of grandiosity and has an epic quality to it, befitting a heroic tale, vast in scope and long in telling. Series or chronicle doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. The only thing that comes close is ‘cycle’ which is what George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series is often referred to as.

Sometimes the most obvious answers are the right ones and The Infinity Saga frankly sounds like the most obvious and appropriate name for the Marvel Cinematic Universe films to date.

The Tesseract, which contained the Space Stone, was introduced all the way back in Phase 1 in Captain America: The First Avenger and the Infinity Gauntlet (albeit a replica) first appeared in Thor. Thanos first appeared in the end-credits scene of The Avengers and he and the Infinity Stones have acted like a specter hanging over everything and propelling the plot ever since. That the Infinity Saga built to the Avengers: Infinity War shows that this name is the right one.

I’m honestly not sure what the MCU’s first three Phases would be called other than The Infinity Saga. The Stan Lee Saga would honor the man who Marvel owes so much to and left such a legacy in the films, but it wouldn’t speak to the story. The only other choice would have been The Avengers Saga, but we may get more Avengers movies after Endgame, so that wouldn’t hold as much weight.

There are more stories yet to come in the MCU, and Endgame is a demarcation line between what came before and what comes after. What’s interesting about finding out this name is that if The Infinity Saga is book 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, what’s book 2?

We know so little about Phase 4 (if it’s even called that) that it’s difficult to make an educated guess at this point. The New Avengers Saga? The Secret Invasion Saga? The Galactus Saga? Or, wishful thinking here as this may be more book 3 material but The Mutant Saga? We probably won’t know for some time, maybe in another 21 films, but it’s fun to think about.

Avengers: Endgame concludes The Infinity Saga on April 26. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to keep track of all of this year’s biggest movies.

Billie Lourd Will Share Scenes With Mother Carrie Fisher In The Rise Of Skywalker

Billie Lourd Will Share Scenes With Mother Carrie Fisher In The Rise Of Skywalker
Billie Lourd and Carrie Fisher on the Force Awakens set

Star Wars is arguably the biggest franchise in the business, having spanned decades of filmmaking and accrued entire generations of rabid fans. And since Disney acquired Lucasfilm years back, plenty of new and exciting projects have helped expand the galaxy far, far away. But despite the standalone films and upcoming live-action series, all eyes are on what J.J. Abrams will do with Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.

The pressure is on for J.J. Abrams to not only conclude the current sequel trilogy, but the entire Skywalker Saga as a whole. What's more, he's also grappled with the challenge of bringing Carrie Fisher's Leia back to the screen through unused footage from the previous two movies. Abrams recently revealed that Fisher will be sharing more scenes with daughter Billie Lourd in the blockbuster. And while he originally wrote out Lourd from certain scenes to spare her emotions, she insisted. As Abrams revealed:

And so, there are moments where they’re talking; there are moments where they’re touching. There are moments in this movie where Carrie is there, and I really do feel there is an element of the uncanny, spiritual, you know, classic Carrie, that it would have happened this way, because somehow it worked. And I never thought it would.

Well, I've got chills. Seeing Carrie Fisher share scenes with her daughter Billie Lourd in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi was already an emotional experience, but things will be even more heightened in the wake of Fisher's death. Because it's like she'll be brought back to have final moments with Lourd's Lt. Connix on screen.

When Carrie Fisher passed away in December of 2016, shortly after wrapping her role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. So while Rian Johnson's sequel was able to use Leia as intended, it was unclear if/how the General would have a role in Episode IX. Luckily, there appears to be enough leftover footage from Fisher's last two appearances, which will be used to complete Leia's story once and for all.

Billie Lourd's role as Lt. Connix has been mostly tertiary, with the 26 year-old actress getting just one quick line in The Force Awakens. Connnix's role was eventually expanded in The Last Jedi, as she was instrumental to Finn's escape to Canto Bight and Poe's mutiny in the film's second act. And from J.J. Abrams' comments to Vanity Fair, it looks like she'll get more screen time in The Rise of Skywalker, even physically touching her late mother's character in the process.

Leia's role in The Rise of Skywalker will likely remain one of the most talked about aspects of the movie ahead of its release. The character had an unpredictable outing in The Last Jedi, so it seems like anything is possible for the final installment in the Skywalker Saga.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will arrive in theaters on December 20th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Zoe Saldana Recalls Anton Yelchin Being ‘Nervous’ To Do Star Trek Justice

Zoe Saldana Recalls Anton Yelchin Being ‘Nervous’ To Do Star Trek Justice
Star Trek Chekov checking calculations on a board

A decade ago this week, Star Trek brought the legendary sci-fi franchise that Gene Roddenberry created for audiences in the ‘60s into a more modern context. And the cast and crew involved knew just how daunting a task that was, especially the actor playing the young version of Ensign Pavel Chekov, the late Anton Yelchin.

Anton Yelchin’s thoughts were conveyed by fellow Star Trek co-star Zoe Saldana in a new documentary entitled Love, Antonsha, which reflects on the untimely passing of Yelchin, and the legacy his brief, but luminous career has left behind. Saldana recalled the young man’s bout of nerves as follows:

He was so aware about the importance of Star Trek and the message that Star Trek had. He understood why it managed to live for such a long time, and he was nervous about being a part of it and giving it that justice.

When the character of Pavel Chekov was initially created, it was in the name of the brand of sci-fi optimism that Gene Roddenberry and his Star Trek brand were always meant to uphold. So obviously, rebooting such a staple of pop culture in the present day is a task that has to be handled very carefully.

This was especially true with Chekov, a Russian member of the multi-ethnicity crew of the USS Enterprise that signaled not only would the Cold War raging in reality eventually end, but that Russia would have a place on the greater world stage in the future. While that prophecy would be fulfilled, Anton Yelchin obviously still felt the weight of keeping this character true to his roots when making Star Trek with J.J. Abrams.

Anton Yelchin’s fears about doing justice to Ensign Chekov is just one of the many stories populating Love Antonsha, which the projects director, Garret Price, apparently didn’t have a hard time gathering. While talking to EW about the projects’ status, as well as sharing the clip of Zoe Saldana recounting her co-star with this beautiful story, Price mentioned that about 60 different A-listers had contributed in some way or another to this collection of memories. And the best part was they didn’t need to be convinced all that hard to say yes.

It’s not difficult to see why Anton Yelchin is so fondly remembered, and that extends even to the Star Trek franchise itself. While he was able to make the first three films in the modern reboot series, there’s still a bit of a discussion as to how his role will be filled, should Star Trek 4 move forward.

A fourth film is a rather questionable prospect at this time, but should any movement be made, it’s safe to assume that J.J. Abrams’ previous remarks about how both Anton Yelchin and Chekov are irreplaceable in the Star Trek universe will inform the decision that pertains to the helm of the Enterprise in its continuing mission.

Love Antonsha will be released into theaters at some point this summer. As soon as we have more information as to when to expect that film, we’ll report back, as well as update our 2019 release schedule accordingly.

The One Weird Nicolas Cage Movie That Nicolas Cage Definitely Wants To Make A Sequel For

The One Weird Nicolas Cage Movie That Nicolas Cage Definitely Wants To Make A Sequel For

Warning: mild spoilers ahead for Mom and Dad! Read ahead at your own risk!

Nicolas Cage has become notorious for his manic and energetic performances over the years, but few can compare to his recent turn in Mom and Dad. Suburban dad who mysteriously finds himself sent into a murderous rage, the film drew ample praise for its sheer wackiness upon its release, and now it seems that Cage himself is incredibly interested in bringing a sequel to life. Speaking with CinemaBlend about the release of his most recent film, The Humanity Bureau, Cage addressed his filmography and admitted that Mom and Dad 2 is something that he's incredibly intrigued by, saying:

I think in terms of sequels, I think Mom and Dad has potential for a sequel. I think so, yeah. I mean, I would be curious to see the direction it could go in, but I think it was probably the most dysfunctional family ever put on celluloid, and with the grandparents coming in. You know, I think that there could be some sort of switch that gets flipped again where the kids start taking over and then going on a rampage. I feel like you could do something with the adapter particular family again and then I have a lot of fun with it.

Those of you who have seen Mom and Dad likely already know how this could pan out. The original film follows Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair's characters as they find themselves overtaken by a mysterious static that compels them to murder their children. However, in a potential sequel, Cage seems to think that a follow-up movie could flip the script and send the kids into the murderous rampage experienced by the adults in the original.

If you have not seen Nicolas Cage's wild performance in Mom and Dad, then make sure to check out the delightfully NSFW clip from the film, below.

Whether or not Mom and Dad 2 can actually happen is arguably a pretty fascinating discussion. The film didn't make much of an impression in terms of financial performance when it debuted, but it did go over quite well with critics and audiences, earning a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes in the process. Money arguably talks louder than anything in Hollywood, but it's not entirely outlandish to think that fan enthusiasm could help bring a Mom and Dad sequel to life at some point.

Of course, for right now Nicolas Cage seems interested in focusing on a more reserved performance that doesn't play to the same beats as Mom and Dad. In fact, elsewhere in his interview with CinemaBlend, the Adaptation star revealed that his work on The Humanity Bureau was defined mainly by his desire to play a more "internal" role that doesn't feature him playing to that classic Nic Cage mania.

We here at CinemaBlend will keep you posted with more updates related the world of Nicolas Cage and whether or not he ever decides actually to make Mom and Dad 2. For now, you can currently catch him in The Humanity Bureau, which is available on VOD and in select theaters!

How Much Toy Story 4 Could Make Opening Weekend

How Much Toy Story 4 Could Make Opening Weekend
Toy Story 4 woody and bo peep

This summer is absolutely stacked with movies, and one of the most high-profile is Toy Story 4. It's been nine years since Toy Story 3 and the new film in the series will find Buzz and Woody reuniting with Bo Peep and trying to find their way back to Bonnie. There's a lot of love for the Toy Story franchise and it sounds like the new film is in for a pretty healthy opening weekend, should all go well. Early tracking for Toy Story 4 has the movie opening to as much as $130 million.

Everybody is talking about Avengers: Endgame and how that film is breaking every record under the sun, but this is only the start of the summer season. There are plenty of other movies that are aiming for box office supremacy, and Toy Story 4 has a solid shot at becoming the highest-grossing animated film of the year.

While we are still a good distance away from the film's June release date, early tracking for Toy Story 4 is already in progress. According to Box Office Pro, the film could open within the range of $105 million to $130 million.

There are a number of factors that could swing this projection. The Toy Story franchise has a lot of nostalgia attached to it, and given the nine-year gap between films, older fans may want to bring kids who were born after Toy Story 3 and introduce them to the franchise. Additionally, reactions to trailers and other footage have been positive, as well as reactions to new characters like Forky.

However, Toy Story 3 is seen as the perfect conclusion to the series by some viewers, so they may not feel compelled to check out the latest adventure. This wouldn't really deter younger fans, but interest in the film amongst older generations isn't as high as it was for Finding Dory and Incredibles 2 by this point, according to Box Office Pro.

The film will also open two weeks after The Secret Life of Pets 2, which could cause Toy Story 4 to have a deflated opening if the Illumination sequel is well-received.

Comparatively, this opening projection is fairly in line with Toy Story 3, which grossed $110 million opening weekend. However it falls behind two of Pixar's most successful films box office-wise. Finding Dory opened with $135 million while Incredibles 2 was Pixar's best opening ever with $182.7 million. However, it's still fairly early, and projections tend to change the closer it gets to the release date.

Will Toy Story 4 be able to escape the Oscar-nominated shadow of Toy Story 3? We'll know for sure when the film arrives in theaters on June 21, 2019. For everything else coming to theaters this year, check out our 2019 movie release guide.

The Charlie’s Angels Reboot Has Been Pushed Back

The Charlie’s Angels Reboot Has Been Pushed Back
Charlie's Angels TV series logo

If you're a fan looking forward to the new reboot of the Charlie's Angels franchise from Elizabeth Banks, there's some bad news. You're going to have to wait a bit longer to see it. On the plus side, the film's new release date greatly improves its box office chances, making the possibility that we could see a new franchise born here that much greater. And you won't have to wait too much longer. The film, originally set for a November 1 bow, will now arrive on November 15 instead.

The movie release calendar is basically a just a bunch of dominoes, and when one falls, the rest follow suit. That's what happened last year when Warner Bros. made the decision to push Wonder Woman 1984 from it's November 1 date to the summer of 2020. When that happened, two big movies jumped into that space. The first was Charlie's Angels moving into the same weekend where the Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, version of the franchise had released, the second was the new Terminator movie, which we now know to be called Terminator: Dark Fate.

This set up an unlikely showdown, where two major tentpole releases were going to hit the same weekend. However, that showdown is now cancelled as Charlie Angel's has now jumped back two more weekends to mid-November.

The reason for the switch is two-fold. First, as with Wonder Woman 1984, the weekend just opened up, following Kingsman spinoff The Great Game leaving that date for February 2020. The other reason apparently has less to do with competing with Terminator domestically, but perhaps more with doing so internationally. Deadline says that the studio thinks the new Charlie's Angels has strong international potential and so the new release date will help with that.

The previous Terminator film wasn't a massive hit in North America, but it did much better overseas, especially in China, so it could be that Angels wants to avoid doing battle in those markets as much as possible.

While Charlie's Angels and Terminator aren't necessarily a pair of franchises that are drawing largely from the same audience, it's still nice that they'll both be given some breathing room. Fewer fans will now need to choose between them and both will be given a chance to succeed or fail on their own merits rather than simply losing business because the other film siphoned some away.

At the same time, it's been so long since we've seen a couple of major films actually go up against each at the box office on opening weekend, it would have been interesting to see who came out on top. Terminator is certainly the more established franchise, but with the success that many female centered films have had in recent years, one certainly wonders if Charlie's Angels might have shocked everybody.

Of course, to get an idea, we'll have to actually get a look at the film. We're still waiting on a trailer.

Some Guy On The Internet Figured Out How Fast Sonic The Hedgehog Is, Spoiler: It's Fast

Some Guy On The Internet Figured Out How Fast Sonic The Hedgehog Is, Spoiler: It's Fast
Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog's whole thing is about moving fast. Speed is the name of his game and the speedy little blue fuzzball certainly movies quickly in the trailer for the live action movie. But just how fast is he actually going? Somebody has done the math and figured out exactly how fast Sonic is moving, and it might be even faster than you think.

The math isn't all that complicated when it comes down to it. Kyle Hill of Because Science takes the brand new trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie and, by using the dividing line on a two-way highway that Sonic runs down, where the dots have a fixed distance of three to four and a half meters, we can tell approximately how far Sonic is running. Because we know the trailer is running at 24 frames a second, we know exactly how long Sonic is running for. These two data points allow Hill to calculate Sonic's speed to be between 108 and 162 meters per second, or between 341 and 362 miles per hour, depending on the distance between the road marks, which vary slightly depending on where the road is located.

Needless to say, that is certainly some serious speed. Of course, it's not nearly as fast as the movie claims he is going. In the opening scene of the trailer a police radar gun appears to clock Sonic at 760 miles per hour, which is just short of the speed of sound. Considering we also see Sonic's speed set off a visible shock wave at the end of the scene that's being used to calculate these numbers, the movie is certainly trying to tell us that Sonic can break the sound barrier.

It's certainly possible that the scene in the trailer is Sonic just warming up, and he'll increase speed to a much faster pace closer to what we're being shown. What's more likely, however, is that showing Sonic move that quickly would actually have him move out of the frame so quickly that we'd never really see him, and so Sonic had to slow down to make the movie work as a movie. If Sonic moved so quickly that you could never really see him, it wouldn't be all that exciting.

Of course, showing people move at incredibly high speeds in a movie or on TV is always a difficult balancing act. How to show the speed while still making the scene look exciting is complicated. This is probably why the movie has at least one sequence that shows speed from Sonic's perspective, which has everything around him moving incredibly slow, similar to how the recent X-Men movies have shown Quicksilver's speed in the same way.

Check out the full explanation of Sonic's speed in the video below.

Of course, right now, few people, even Sonic the Hedgehog fans, are all that excited about how fast Sonic is moving. The focus is instead on what he looks like when he stands still. The design of the character has received a lot of negative feedback, so much so that the movie's director has said that changes to the character design will happen before the movie comes out later this year.

Sonic the Hedgehog hits theaters November 8.
