Why The Spawn Reboot Wont Reveal Too Much Behind-The-Scenes Information

A lot of comic book fans are looking forward to the long-rumored Spawn reboot, but they probably shouldn't look forward to hearing a lot about it before it hits theaters. Spawn creator Todd McFarlane says that, while production of the new movie is scheduled, there's always the possibility that the current schedule could change for any number of reasons and he's afraid if too much is known about the current plan, people might start to panic when those plans change. According to McFarlane...

If because of an actor's schedule, we got to move [the release date] or if for whatever reason, the shot takes a little longer, we got to move it. Then if you say too specifically what the day you give them, be a week or two weeks, then all of a sudden you'll read an article somewhere, and people say, 'It's a troubled production! Troubled, troubled production!

While this might feel like an overreaction, the fact is that overreaction is exactly what Todd McFarlane is apparently trying to avoid. Spawn isn't going to have the sort of budget that your traditional big-screen comic book movie has these days, which means the production is likely going to need to be flexible in order to stay within the confines of the money they have. While that flexibility would be perfectly normal on the set, from the outside looking in, it might appear to be a bigger issue than it actually is. We have seen things like that happen, such as literally anytime a movie goes back to do reshoots.

Considering the fact that Spawn is a green-lit movie that has a writer and a director, both Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, and a lead actor cast in the role in Jamie Foxx, you'd think the movie might be a bit more set in stone. However, what the film doesn't have is a release date, which means the movie isn't necessarily working under a strict timetable to get production done.

Of course, that's not to say that we won't be getting any behind-the-scenes info on Spawn. Todd McFarlane tells ComicBook.com that he will be sharing some info from the set while he's directing the new feature. He can't say when or what, but he guarantees it will happen.

I'll be sharing some of the information, especially while I'm filming. I'm going to be there on the set with people....I'm going to share some of the fun of making a movie. So, yeah, we're scheduled. So, it's coming. You know, I don't have a date, but it's coming. We'll be open.

While we may not know what we're going to get, or when we might see it, if Todd McFarlane shares any details about the new Spawn movie, you can be sure we'll have it here at CinemaBlend.

John Boyega Calls Finn's Episode IX Relationship Status A 'Love Pentagon'

It's a very exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. Once Disney acquired Lucasfilm, the House of Mouse began churning out content like a well-oiled machine. Standalone films and the upcoming live-action series The Mandalorian break new ground for the franchise, while main installments continue the Skywalker Saga. The last eight movies will come to a head when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters, and fans are eager to see the beloved characters' fates.

While both Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill will reprise their roles in The Rise of Skywalker, the film will likely focus on the trio of new heroes. This includes John Boyega's Finn, who is shown rocking some new duds in the film's first trailer. There's been plenty of talk amongst the fandom regarding who Finn might end up with romantically, with the options even including Poe Dameron. Boyega recently described Finn's relationship status in Episode IX, saying:

You add Poe in there as well, there's a love triangle. Very complicated. We've got a few aliens that've been looking at Finn a certain type of way, so I don't know if you want to add their names to the list. Yeah, it's a love pentagon, man. There’s a lot going on. I think he is [the most eligible bachelor in the galaxy] period. Finn is single and willing to mingle.

Is there Tinder in space? John Boyega had a good sense of humor about Finn's romantic possibilities, and and he seems to admit there's a ton of options available. Lucky him.

John Boyega's comments come from the Episode IX panel at Star Wars Celebration. Finn was shown in the past two films sharing romantic scenes with a few characters. While he pined for Rey in The Force Awakens, he also forged a connection to Rose Tico in The Last Jedi. Plus, there's the long standing fan theories about Finn and Poe's relationship-- one that Boyega and Oscar Isaac are happy to add fuel to.

Excluding Poe from the equation, it should be interesting to see if Finn ends up forging a relationship with either Rey or Rose in The Rise of Skywalker. While he was originally head over heels for Daisy Ridley's character, he shared a kiss with Rose on Crait in the most recent movie. During the same panel at Star Wars Celebration, Boyega went on to address Finn/Rose, saying:

She my girl. There's nice chemistry. It's in the middle of a war, we're trying to figure ourselves out. We love you one day, don't love you the next. It's a very distracting place to fall in love.

Well, that's cryptic. John Boyega has learned how to avoid spoilers during his tenure in the Star Wars franchise, so he's become adept at answering questions without giving too much away. Love has always been a theme in the galaxy far, far away, with the previous two trilogies containing epic love stories with Han/Leia and Anakin/Padme. By comparison, the current set of films has bee missing this aspect of storytelling, so we'll see how it all ends up once The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters.

Kelly Marie Tran is back playing Rose Tico in Episode IX, after being the target of intense online harassment which ultimately resulted in her leaving social media. When Tran was asked if she'd share a kiss with John Boyega in the upcoming blockbuster, she said:

All I'll say is Finn is a very eligible bachelor.

It looks like Finn will have a few suitors in The Rise of Skywalker, which proves one thing: it pays to leave The First Order. You might be facing insurmountable odds as a Resistance Member, but at least you'll meet other singles in the galaxy.

Kevin Smith Was 'A Blubbering Mess' After Captain Marvel's Mallrats Scene

Spoiler Warning: If you don't want to get spoiled on a very specific part of Captain Marvel, come back after you've seen the film!

It's a Marvel tradition to include a cameo from comics legend Stan Lee. As the first MCU film to feature a Stan Lee cameo after his passing, Captain Marvel's was bound to feel special and that turned out to be especially true for Kevin Smith. The cameo features Lee reading the script for Mallrats, Smith's film in which Lee makes an appearance. The cameo hit Smith like a ton of bricks, and he took to social media to share what a "blubbering mess" he was.

For a little extra context, Mallrats is Kevin Smith's second film. It premiered in 1995 and featured two slackers who spend all their time in a New Jersey mall and try to win back their girlfriends, who are fed up with their juvenile attitudes. One of the slackers (played by Jason Lee) is obsessed with comics and superhero genitalia. In probably the most memorable moment in the film, Stan Lee appeared as himself to give Lee's character some much needed wisdom on relationships.

In Captain Marvel, Stan Lee can be found reading the script for Mallrats on a train, rehearsing his lines under his breath. It's a super fun moment that works perfectly in the '90s set movie. The moment was bound to make some fans teary-eyed considering Lee passed away last year, but Kevin Smith might have had the most significant reaction.

The filmmaker took to Twitter to share his reaction to seeing his work referenced in a Marvel movie and by Stan Lee no less. Kevin Smith said that he was a "blubbering mess" with a photograph to prove it. The filmmaker also wrote that "after a lifetime spent referencing the movies, the movies just referenced me!" It's a pretty great way to have your work referenced and it no doubt means a lot to Smith.

Kevin Smith also asked, since he's now officially part of the MCU, did he survive Thanos' famous snap? Well, he's got a 50-50 shot at least!

Of course, this wasn't the only way that Marvel Studios paid homage to the co-creator of its iconic superheroes. The opening Marvel Studios logo replaced the Avengers with Stan Lee and all of his cameo appearances. It was the perfect way to respect Lee. The Marvel legend had filmed a few of his cameos before he passed, so we have at least one more to look forward to in Avengers: Endgame in a few short months.

Getting the opportunity to meet a prominent figure in any work field is a universally intimidating experience to which we can all relate, but it’s easy to imagine that it’s particularly nerve-wracking for actors. After all, becoming a “prominent figure” in the performing arts means that they are one of the most famous people on the planet, and being around anyone with that kind of popularity and power can put a person a bit off their game. This in mind, it’s pretty easy to understand why Mena Massoud made an awkward mistake the first time he had the opportunity to meet Will Smith in the making of Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin.

So what exactly happened? To put it plainly, Massoud’s introduction to Smith wasn’t so much an introduction, as the young actor actually completely forgot to introduce himself. This is a funny story that I had the opportunity to learn this past weekend during the Los Angeles press day for Aladdin, as Massoud told me about his first time meeting the headliner of the new fantasy blockbuster:

Yeah, I definitely geeked out. The first time I met him was during prep before we started shooting, and I was so nervous I forgot to say my name when I went up and introduced myself. So really I didn't introduce myself. So I had to backtrack and go back and it was a little awkward for me. But it's a dream come true. Me and the boys would get together when we were younger and put on a Will Smith movie. So it's amazing.

So it’s not the most embarrassing situation we’ve heard about behind-the-scenes in Hollywood, but one can also picture it as a blush-inducing moment.

Mena Massoud does have a fair amount of acting experience under his belt, his first role being in a 2011 episode of the television series Nikita – but Aladdin is definitely a big deal for his career. Not only is it the first major blockbuster of which he’s been a part, but it’s also the first opportunity that he’s had to play the titular role in anything. It was also his first chance to work alongside an A-lister on the level of Will Smith, so one can fully understand why he would totally forget to say his own name during the initial introduction.

Awkward as that may have been at the start, fortunately things definitely worked out well in the end. The relationship between Mena Massoud’s Aladdin and Will Smith’s character, Genie, is one of the most important in the film, and it’s also one of the best parts of the finished product. They have a great back and forth together, and you’d never guess watching the movie that things got off to a bit of an odd start when they first met.

Among the most heartbreaking deaths in Avengers: Infinity War, and certainly the most meme’d, was Peter Parker's, who didn’t feel so good and faded to dust in Tony Stark’s arms. Given that, we are especially eager to see Peter Parker brought back to life and reunited with his mentor once more in Avengers: Endgame. While we wait for that emotional moment, Robert Downey Jr. has shard a behind the scenes look from the film of himself with Spider-Man. Take a look:

One of the best things about the MCU is the fun pairings of actors and their characters, and although Iron Man and Spider-Man is one of the newer ones, first coming in Captain America: Civil War, it is easily one of the most entertaining. We see their great dynamic here, as Tony Stark is attempting to be his normal snarky self with Robert Downey Jr. sarcastically saying how stoked he is to be in the photo.

But he can’t help but smirk next to his mentee, Tom Holland’s overly enthusiastic Peter Parker, who is genuinely stoked to be standing next to ‘Mr. Stark.’ The upside down internship certificate is a nice touch too. What a fantastic duo these two are and if Robert Downey Jr. leaves the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Endgame, more of this pairing will be one of the top things we’ll have to lament.

This picture is a cool behind-the-scenes look at a shot from the most recent Avengers: Endgame trailer where Tony is holding a photo of himself and Peter Parker with the internship certificate. Every hero seems to have one person in particular who was snapped away that most affected them, and with Pepper alive, for Tony, that’s Peter Parker. You can the image of this scene from the teaser below:

This scene reminds us how Tony Stark at times attempted to use Spider-Man and provide some guidance to Peter Parker, while pretending not to care and not being overly affectionate towards the kid. But it’s clear now that Tony Stark does care about Peter Parker very much, and he’s the person he most wants to avenge and bring back. That makes their potential reunion all the more anticipated.

As Tony Stark hashtags in his Instagram post, the reunion of these two characters can heal the internet, which has spent the last year laughing through the pain at poor Peter Parker who didn’t want to go. To do that though, they’ll have to heal the divisions in the team and band together to topple Thanos for good.

Detective Pikachu Doesn't Actually Use A Ton Of Green Screen

The Pokemon franchise has experienced a resurgence of popularity in recent years comparable to its heyday in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. That’s only going to increase in the future, particularly with the Detective Pikachu movie coming out this summer. Over two decades after the world was introduced to these Pocket Monsters, they’re finally appearing in a live action movie, although the Pokemon themselves are obviously CGI creations that strike a weird balance of looking realistic and cartoonish simultaneously. As it turns out, though, even with all this VFX work, Detective Pikachu didn’t rely on green screen too much. According to star Justice Smith:

There wasn’t a lot of green screen. Our director, Rob Letterman — I’m getting better at saying last names, Rob Letterman — wanted to shoot on location as much as possible. We shot in London, and for like a week in Scotland which is like a desktop background. He had this vision to put the Pokémon up against this urban backdrop and use this gray, grainy filter. We shot on film so it gave it that natural grain.

Given how VFX-intensive making a live action Pokemon movie is, it would have been easy enough for the Detective Pikachu cast and crew to get most of their work done on green screens, similar to what the Star Wars prequels did. But no, director Rob Letterman decided to take everyone out on location frequently, resulting in much of Detective Pikachu looking less artificial. Justice Smith added that the use of film and the grainy filter made Detective Pikachu feel like a noir and that the Pokemon actually “pop more” against this realistic backdrop.

Even though the Pokemon in Detective Pikachu are put together with CGI, the crew did design incredibly detailed statues of how many of these Pokemon would look in the final cut. Continuing in his interview with Vulture, Justice Smith recalled how he reacted when he first saw these designs, saying:

When I first saw them, I freaked. The inner child in me was having a field day. They brought in a statue of Pikachu that was all covered in fur and it was soft and everything. Its nose was rubber and wet. It was so lifelike, and I was just like internally crying, because I was like, ‘This is exactly how I wanted to see them portrayed.’ It was a childhood dream come true.

Starring Justice Smith as Tim Goodman and Ryan Reynolds as the voice of the deerstalker hat-wearing, amnesia-suffering Pikachu who only Tim can understand, Detective Pikachu follows these two joining forces to find Tim’s dad, Harry, who has mysteriously disappeared. The cast also includes Kathryn Newton as Lucy Stevens, a reporter also looking into Harry’s disappearance who is accompanied by her Psyduck; Ken Watanabe as Detective Yoshida, a colleague of Harry’s who has a Snubbull; Paul Kitson as Harry and Omar Chapphro as Sebastian, a Pokemon trainer running a battle area who has a Charizard.

Taron Egerton Hopes Rocketman Makes Even Half Of Bohemian Rhapsody’s Money

Rocketman is not Bohemian Rhapsody. Taron Egerton is aware of it. There are easy comparisons, of course, in that Egerton is playing Elton John in a music biopic the same way Rami Malek played Freddie Mercury. They even have director Dexter Fletcher in common, since Fletcher stepped in to finish Bohemian Rhapsody after Bryan Singer was fired.

Since Bohemian Rhapsody made a mind-boggling $903,175,016 at the box office, off a projected production budget just over $50 million, it's a ridiculously high bar for the next music biopic to face.

Taron Egerton was candid about the comparisons, just hoping for the best:

I'm at peace with however much money it makes. But I hope it does really, really well. If it made half of [Bohemian Rhapsody], it would be terrific for my career.

True. As Taron Egerton suggested in his quote to THR, half of Bohemian Rhapsody's record-breaking money is still about half a billion dollars worldwide, a success by any metric for a film of this size. The 29-year-old actor is clearly keen to advance his career. He's known to many as Eggsy from the Kingsman movies, and also the titular Eddie the Eagle. He also has some singing experience from the movie Sing. And he was the lead of the notorious 2018 bomb Robin Hood.

All it takes is one movie to launch your career -- just ask Rami Malek, who was best known from Mr. Robot before being shot to fame, picking up a Best Actor Oscar for Freddie Mercury, and now playing a Bond villain.

Rocketman will inevitably be judged next to Best Picture-nominated Bohemian Rhapsody, but they aren't exactly apples to apples. For one thing, Rocketman is Rated R, vs. Bohemian Rhapsody at PG-13. They are also telling their stories in very different ways. Rocketman has a lot of sex and drugs -- and that sex is between men, with Taron Egerton's Elton having sex scenes with Richard Madden's John Reid.

Apparently that's one reason why Rocketman stalled at Universal. Producer Matthew Vaughn recalled a conversation with studio chairman Donna Langley:

I rang her up and she's like, 'You definitely want to make it an R-rated film and you're going to make it for over $35 million?' And I said, 'Yes.' And she said, 'Good luck.'

Despite reports that Paramount asked director Dexter Fletcher to tone down the film -- to make it more marketable in a huge box office like China, which usually bans any gay scenes -- the filmmakers say Rocketman still depicts Elton John coming to terms with his sexuality and also shows his issues with substance abuse.

Another difference between Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman is Elton John is still with us (unlike Freddie Mercury) and was able to be there for the film and give his blessing. He praised Taron Egerton's performance to THR, saying the film made him forget it was Taron up there, he thought he was watching himself. "That's the highest compliment I can tell you."

Rocketman is opening in theaters on May 31, which puts it squarely up against Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It's going to have to grab onto the rest of the audience and hope to leg out from there. Early tracking put Rocketman's opening weekend around $20 million.

If Rocketman gets good reviews -- from fans even more than critics -- it could theoretically enjoy success on a level next to Bohemian Rhapsody, which just kept quietly making money week after week until we all turned around and it was knocking on the door of $1 billion worldwide. Most of that money came from overseas, though -- especially Japan, which just went crazy for Queen -- and it's much less likely that Rocketman will be embraced by the foreign box office in the same way.
