Leaving Neverland Director Says Film Is A Documentary, Despite Claims From Jackson Estate

After it recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, the documentary Leaving Neverland immediately became a source of controversy. The film follows two adults who claim that Michael Jackson sexually abused them as children. The pop stars family and estate responded to the film by putting out a statement that denied the claims of the film and its principals ,as well as declared that Leaving Neverland is not a documentary, but a tabloid character assassination. Now the films director, Dan Reed, has responded to their statement, assuring that his film is a documentary. He said:

It is a four-hour documentary by an experienced documentarian with a long track record in investigation and telling complex stories and this is a complex story. So I'd say it's beyond doubt a documentary. Anyone with any knowledge of that form would recognize a documentary. A four-hour piece, is that a tabloid?

In his response to Michael Jacksons estate, Dan Reed seems to take the most issue with the claim that his film is not a documentary. He defends Leaving Neverlands documentary status and rebukes any notion that it is tabloid fodder with this matter-of-fact response.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Reed laid out the various ways in which his film qualifies as a documentary, including his history as a documentary filmmaker, which is not a matter of opinion. Dan Reed has lots of documentary credits to his name, including for films that tackled complex subjects just like the one Leaving Neverland covers. So in defending the film, Dan Reed is also listing off the credentials that made him qualified to make it.

In addition to saying that his film is a documentary, Dan Reed also questioned whether or not Michael Jacksons family, the ones criticizing his film, have even seen it. He said:

Their statements are not consistent with having watched the movie.

The way Dan Reed sees it, the Jackson family didnt give his film its due consideration, condemning it without even seeing it because of the subjects in the film and the story being told. Of course, if the film even insinuates the Michael Jackson sexually abused the two subjects as children, I dont imagine that seeing the film would change the Jackson familys opinion of it.

Elsewhere in his discussion with THR, he asserts that he made no attempt to characterize Michael Jackson at all in the film, and that Leaving Neverland is a story about two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, their families and the impact that sexual abuse had on them, and that their relationship with Michael Jackson is just an element of the story.

Given the delicate nature of the story and the entrenched beliefs in Michael Jacksons guilt or innocence, I wouldnt expect this to be the last volley back and forth we hear about Leaving Neverland.

HBO is planning to premiere Leaving Neverland in March on the channel/platform. Because Leaving Neverland is a four-hour film, HBO is expected to split it into two separate chunks to air over two nights.

30 Minutes Of Avengers: Infinity War Have Screened, Heres What People Think

It's a very good time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio is still riding high on the wild success of Black Panther, which is still in theaters and making history. The entire shared universe is about to change in just a few weeks, as Avengers: Infinity War finally hits theaters and likely kills at least one fan favorite character in the process. Disney and the folks at the MCU have been keeping things pretty light lipped regarding what could possibly occur during the blockbuster, while also releasing perfectly timed posters and trailers to keep anticipation at a fever pitch. Some lucky insiders got to see 30 minutes of Avengers: Infinity War, and they promptly took to Twitter to cryptically share their thoughts. Spoiler alert: it looks awesome.

It looks like Avengers: Infinity War is going to fire at all fronts. The upcoming blockbuster's sneak peek footage had action, solid comedic beats, as well as awesome villains. The latter is particularly exciting, as the MCU has had mixed success when it comes to their onscreen antagonists. While Josh Brolin is looking to change the game as the villainous Thanos, he's also bringing his Black Order, who have their own terrifying methods of inflicting pain.

With so many characters for the Russo Brothers to juggle, fans have been wondering how they'll manage to pivot between all the players. Now it looks like certain characters will bring tonal shifts to the movie. As Digital Spy tells it,

While only 30 minutes from the film's long runtime have beens shared, it seems they didn't include Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye. Despite being an original Avenger, the archer has never really gotten the chance to shine. He's been noticeably missing from the Avengers: Infinity War trailer and posters. The Russo Brothers have maintained this is all a purposeful choice to move the plot forward, but it's raised a few flags.

Yahoo's Tom Butler also took to Twitter to throw praise at Avengers: Infinity War. While being sure to be vague about what he saw, Butler was sure to mention the use of comedy in the new blockbuster. Humor has quickly become a focal point of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. Movie fans go to theaters expecting to laugh when they're not witnessing an epic action sequence, although sometimes there's a combination of both like in Captain America: Civil War's airport battle.

It should come to no surprise that The Russo Brothers put as much comedy as possible, especially considering the comedic talent attached to Avengers: Infinity War. There's Guardians of the Galaxy's Chris Pratt, mainstays like Robert Downey Jr and Chris Hemsworth, and even the always delightful Paul Rudd all occupying the same space. The group dynamics will no doubt be awesome, as well as seeing characters finally interact for the first time.

There are a lot of fairly famous names in Fifty Shades franchise movies, but we didn't know until recently that Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage was actually responsible for helping Jamie Dornan get ready for the third movie Fifty Shades Freed. During a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Peter Dinklage volunteered the information, noting,

I read some of the screenplay, though, in our dressing room. I went in. He had to do some reshoots for Fifty Shades and I would help him out learning lines. I would read the Dakota Johnson parts. Yeah, I was just helping a friend learn lines. I nailed it. I really did.

Following Peter Dinklage's amusing reveal about how he helped his My Dinner With Herve co-star Jamie Dornan prep for Fifty Shades Freed, Stephen Colbert chimed in with a great joke of his own, noting after Peter Dinklage said he "nailed it" that he thinks "that was one of the lines." Classic late night.

All in all, it's still a really funny image to think about Jamie Dornan and Peter Dinklage sitting in a dressing room together and reading a bunch of "kinky fuckery" sex scenes with Dinklage in the role Dakota Johnson plays in the movie. Scratch that, I'm really hoping they were rehearsing the scene where Anastasia Steele makes Jamie Dornan steak and they talk about having a family. The possibilities for Dinklage and Dornan rehearsing scenes are endless.

Stephen Colbert also attempted to get Dinklage to compare Fifty Shades fans with those fans who are obsessed with HBO's Game of Thrones. However, Peter Dinklage said there may not be as much crossover as Colbert seemed to be implying, noting that he personally feels they are very different fanbases.

I think Game Of Thrones fans would take issue with comparing the two, because Game of Thrones fans are very specific and lovely.
