Justice Leagues Ray Fisher Still Wants Zack Snyder To Direct A Cyborg Movie

The DC Extended Universe landscape has changed a lot in the last four years. In late 2014, Warner Bros announced its initial slate of movies for the franchise, and a Cyborg movie was intended to be released in 2020. Fast-forward to now, it's looking increasingly unlikely that Cyborg will arrive in 2020, but actor Ray Fisher is interested in having Zack Snyder helm that standalone movie if it ends up moving forward. In Fisher's words:

Zack explained what the overall plan for me was at the time and that there was the potential of a Cyborg standalone down the line. Assuming the story would be grounded and compelling, I'd love to do a solo film. I think Cyborg has the potential for a superhero film unlike any we've seen before. If Zack were to ever come back to direct another DC film, he'd be my top pick to direct.

Thus far, Ray Fisher has appeared in two DCEU movies as Cyborg, both of which were directed by Zack Snyder. Since Fisher had a good time working with the director, I can't blame the actor for wanting to collaborate with him again, especially since Snyder had mapped out what was going to happen with Cyborg post-Justice League.

This is certainly an interesting prospect that Ray Fisher brought up during his interview with DC World, but the chances of it actually happening are questionable. Although he's attached as a producer on various upcoming DCEU movies, Zack Snyder currently isn't attached to direct anything in the franchise, and as of this past May, he's expected to work on an adaptation of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead next. So unless there are some massive shifts behind the scenes of the DCEU, I doubt this will happen, at least anytime soon.

Although Cyborg had ties with the Justice League in the comics pre-2011, for the first three decades of his existence, he was best known as a member of the Teen Titans. But when the New 52 reboot changed the DC universe's history, Cyborg was established as one of the Justice League's founding members, a plot element that was retained Justice League: War (the first entry of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series) and the DCEU.

We were introduced Victor Stone in the DCEU through video footage on Lex Luthor's metahuman files in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. There, we watched as Victor's father, Dr. Silas Stone, tried desperately to rebuild his son after a horrible accident and failing with each attempt. It was only when he merged Victor with one of the three Mother Boxes left on Earth after Steppenwolf first tried to conquer Earth that Silas had any luck, although the transformation was definitely painful for Victor.

When we reunited with Victor in Justice League, he was a full Cyborg, although he subsequently had to hide from the world and grew frightened of his abilities. Victor wasn't initially interested in working with Batman and Wonder Woman, but after Silas was kidnapped by Parademons, he teamed up with them. With Aquaman, Flash and Superman (at the tail end of the movie), the six of them formed the Justice League, Earth's new team of enhanced defenders.

Like the rest of its starring heroes, Justice League left Cyborg in a place that set the stage for a standalone adventure. In his case, he'd made amends with his father and adopted a look closer to that of his comic book counterpart's while exploring what he's capable of at S.T.A.R. Labs. Had the DCEU evolved as originally intended, we would have gotten Cyborg's movie in early 2020, followed by Green Lantern Corps a few months later.

As things stand now, there are two DCEU movies scheduled for 2020: Birds of Prey will come out on February 7 and Wonder Woman 1984 will come out on June 5, having previously been slated for November 1, 2019. It's possible that Warner Bros might release a third DCEU movie in 2020 (although the studio would need to work fast to start production), but judging by the lack of updates concerning Cyborg, it's unlikely it will fill that slot.

We also can't forget that what Zack Snyder originally envisioned for Justice League wasn't what we ended up seeing on the silver screen. During post-production, Snyder stepped down from directorial duties and Joss Whedon, who'd already been hired to rewrite some of the movie's scenes, was tasked with overseeing reshoots. The end result was a Justice League that felt like a Frankenstein creation, and while Ray Fisher has previously said that Snyder envisioned Cyborg having a "twisted, apocalyptic look," that was sacrificed for the final product.

After Justice League received mixed reviews and underwhelming at the box office, the DCEU went through restructuring and Snyder's future plans were set aside, including presumably what was supposed to happen with Cyborg. Had Snyder's original vision remained intact, supposedly Justice League would have been the third movie in a five movie run (Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice being the first two), and his future plans included Darkseid coming into play and killing off Batman.

So even if we were still traveling down this path, Zack Snyder likely would have been keeping busy with the Justice League sequels rather than working on Cyborg's movie, thus requiring someone else taking the creative reins. But as mentioned earlier, things have changed and now the DCEU is adopting a more standalone approach with its movies.

As for Ray Fisher, despite some of Cyborg's material being cut out of Justice League, he was happy with how the movie turned out and is obviously still interested in Victor Stone getting the spotlight to himself, even though he's admitted that would be a costly endeavor. Both Fisher and Joe Morton, who plays Silas Stone, have kept the Cyborg movie conversation going, and who knows, maybe down the line Warner Bros and DC will decide that a Cyborg movie is worth making after all, even if Zack Snyder isn't the one who directs it.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for all the latest and greatest updates concerning Cyborg and the rest of the DCEU. If you're interested in learning what else this franchise has in development, look through our DC movies guide.

First Overlord Trailer Is Full Of Nazi Zombies And AC/DC

First Overlord Trailer Is Full Of Nazi Zombies And AC/DC

For a while now, the project known as Overlord has been a bit of a mystery over at the Paramount lot. With a vague premise involving Nazi medical experiments uncovered as the D-Day invasion is raging on, not much was known about J.J. Abrams' next big film as a producer. That changes today, as the first trailer has been unveiled, and it's full of undead Nazis and an AC/DC soundtrack! Rock on yourself, through the trailer below.

Overlord sees a group of American soldiers stranded behind enemy lines, after being shot down by German anti-aircraft guns. But what starts as an episode of Band of Brothers turns into something straight out of Call of Duty's Nazi Zombies mode, as our intrepid crew (full of rising stars such as Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, and Mathilde Ollivier) find themselves in a little village with a big secret. A secret that's tapping into some dangerous stuff, in the name of Hitler's thousand-year Reich.

To compare Overlord to Activision's famous video game experience is a compliment in the highest sense of the word. Director Julius Avery's horror thriller looks to have taken the basic bones of the Nazi Zombies experience and turned it into a rip-roaring horror/action hybrid. It could just be the editing of the trailer, but watching Overlord sell its overall product is a sight to behold. Not to mention, it's a treat for the ears, as someone finally decided to dig a little deeper into the AC/DC catalog and pull "Hell's Bells" out to really tie this trailer together.

Sadly, it still looks like Overlord is, in fact, not a Cloverfield movie. Which is a shame, considering what we've just seen looks like it'd fit into the universe as organically as fellow whisper candidate A Quiet Place would have. Come to think of it, with that point in mind, it feels like Paramount is dead set on reinventing itself as a genre-friendly home. In a year that's given us The Cloverfield Paradox, as well as John Krasinski's directorial debut of horrors, Overlord feels like another step towards crowd-pleasing adventure for the recently beleaguered studio. And if this film lives up to even half of the potential it's shown us, there's a chance that this could be a breakout hit of the fall.

Overlord puts its zombies where its mouth is on November 9th. However, if you want to scare up even more fun throughout 2018, take a look at this year's release schedule to see what's lurking in the shadows.

The first official trailer for Overlord has just been revealed and it's a time machine back to the night before D-Day, only with zombies. Other than the trailer above, we know little about this film beyond what we see here. What we do know is that Overlord is directed by Julius Avery and written by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith. J.J. Robin Hood Reviews Are Up, Heres What Critics Are Saying

Robin Hood Reviews Are Up, Heres What Critics Are Saying

Robin Hood is one of those timeless characters who's going to get movies made about him for as long as we're making movies. The story of robbing the rich to give to the poor works in any era and makes for instant drama, but how does the new Robin Hood, starring Kingsman's Taron Egerton in the title role, stack up against the rest? Our own Mike Reyes found the film enjoyable enough, giving it 3.5 stars out of five, though he felt the movie felt a little too much like Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, a not enough like an original Robin Hood concept. According to Reyes...

While this modern Robin Hood does feel very much a product of its time, with fun performances and kinetic action thrown into the mix, it feels as if it had to crib from another landmark franchise to do so.

There are a few other positive reviews of the film that tend to fall strongly into the "it's fun, don't think too hard" school of movie praise. Variety's Owen Gleiberman also points out the ways that this Robin Hood takes some cues from modern superhero movies like Batman, but also compares the film to another, very different, style of film, the over-the-top glitz, glamour, and surrealness of the director of Moulin Rouge.

Robin Hood is no classic, but if it sometimes seems like it's trying to be Baz Luhrmann's Robin Hood, more power to it.

There are other positive reviews, which is to say, as of this writing, there is a single other positive review currently posted on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The UK's Independent says mostly credit the film's never-ceasing tempo and a couple of standout performances.

After a clumsy beginning, the story quickly builds up momentum. It has a likeably self-deprecating performance from Taron Egerton as Robin and a wonderfully sneering and malevolent one from Ben Mendelsohn as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Once we get past these few positive notes, however, it's all downhill. The vast majority of the opinions are coming down squarely on the "it's just bad" side of the fence. The Wrap's Yolanda Machado felt the script was "uninspired," saying...

Reboots and remakes are meant to introduce a new audience to a classic tale with fresh ideas and storylines that make the story relevant to modern audiences. Robin Hood doesn't even try.

It seems like the new Robin Hood may give you everything you expect from a Robin Hood movie, bows and arrows, swordfights, the Sherriff of Nottingham, etc. but doesn't really give you much more than that. It tries to add a different spin to the material by giving the film a more modern feel, which is certainly something that we haven't seen from Robin Hood movies before, Keven Costner's lack of accent notwithstanding.

Of course, the last time a movie tried to do a modernized, but still period, version of a classic myth, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, it didn't work out very well for anybody involved. THR's Todd McCarthy reminds us all of that box office bomb, and lumps Robin Hood in with it. He's looking for an apology after sitting through Robin Hood.

In a just world, everyone involved in this mess would be required to perform some sort of public penance.

Of course, not every review that agrees the film is bad goes quite so far as to expect everybody to perform community service. Some have been able to find bright spots in an otherwise poor production. While Robin Hood as a movie may not work, some, like the Boston Globe's Meredith Goldstein, do think Taron Eggerton works as Robin Hood, saying...

Egerton makes for an ideal Robin, with his Lego-shaped jaw, and his ability to deliver lines with great sarcasm while looking good in stylish outerwear... The only problem is that there isn't much for Egerton's Robin to say. The zingers don't quite zing.

As of this writing, Robin Hood is sitting with an 18% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The general consensus is clearly that Robin Hood isn't very good, and with the film seeing significant competition over the Thanksgiving weekend from the likes of Creed II and Ralph Breaks The Internet, which have both reviewed much better, it seems like the movie may have a significantly uphill battle when it comes to the box office.
