The Perfection’s Director And Stars Really Want You To Keep The Movie’s Big Twists A Secret

The Perfection’s Director And Stars Really Want You To Keep The Movie’s Big Twists A Secret
Allison Williams and Logan Browning kiss in The Perfection

Every movie ever made is made better when you don’t know exactly what’s going to happen before you watch, but that’s being said, The Perfection is a special case. Simply put, it’s one of the most surprising horror features released in recent memory, and possesses some major twists during its runtime that audiences will definitely not see coming. As such, it’s a feature that deserves extra protection from widely spread spoilers as it makes its way to Netflix this week – and that’s not just me talking, but also the film’s director and stars.

This past week I had the immense pleasure of sitting down with writer/director Richard Shepard and actresses Allison Williams and Logan Browning, and one subject that I brought up during both conversations was the way in which they hope that audiences will wind up discussing the movie. There’s a bit of an extra challenge involved given that it will be available to watch instantly by Netflix subscribers everywhere on Friday, but as Browning put it, The Perfection isn’t a film that you should recommend to your friends by simply explaining it beat for beat:

I really don't want people to spoil it for each other…. So you have to kind of go in early and then really respect your friends and just encourage them to go watch it. Because I think it's way more fun, way more enjoyable to talk to someone about, 'Oh, remember when that happened?' instead of telling them everything and then they have a ruined experience. So yeah, just don't spoil it, and enjoy it!

For his part, Richard Shepard agreed that the movie is best experienced when audiences know as little about it as possible – but also added that even if you are aware of some plot details, there is still a lot going on in the film that people will be able to appreciate. The Perfection is purposefully built with different layers (he describes it as “unique and sexy and weird and dark, and also funny”), and is personally excited to hear about the conversation that surrounds it following its release. He explained,

The greatest genre movies always have more than one thing going on. There's social commentary, there's hopefully film aesthetic commentary, and then there's just the fun of a good genre movie. And I hope that The Perfection has all of those things… But part of the joy of this movie is kind of going in a little blind. So it's going to be interesting as it drops all over the world on the same day. But in a way that's kind of what the beauty of this situation is. It's like, 'Here it is. Now let's see if people gravitate toward it.'

While I most certainly won’t spoil the movie for you here, it’s safe to mention that The Perfection stars Allison Williams as a former cello prodigy named Charlotte Willmore, who finds her way back into the music world following the death of her mother – whose sickness was the reason she left in the first place. Reuniting with her former instructor (Steven Weber) during an event in China, she has the opportunity to meet Logan Browning’s Elizabeth Wells, who has experienced all the global acclaim and fame to which Charlotte once came so close. The two of them immediately bond, agreeing to go on a two week vacation together, but things start to go horribly wrong when a night out partying results in Lizzy starting to feel exceptionally sick.

Allison Williams, of course, has some notable experience with big twists thanks to her acclaimed part in Get Out, and she had her own interesting perspective to add to the conversation. She definitely agreed with Logan Browning that specific details from The Perfection shouldn’t just be dropped on friends or blasted on social media, but she also has a certain hands-off approach that recognizes that the movie doesn’t really belong to the filmmakers or stars once it’s released; it belongs to the audience. Said Williams,

This is now that weird moment where it's not ours anymore. And so I can hope that people interact with this theme or that theme or whatever, but for the most part I'm learning this is when we just throw up our hands and say, 'Okay, we've raised you as best we can. Now be good in the world and take care of yourself!' I'm so curious to see what people's reactions are to it, because that's always this other phase of doing a movie. You learn stuff about it when you hear other people thinking and engaging with it. So I agree. Don't spoil it for people. Memes will happen, and hopefully people just won't know the context of them.

You can watch my conversation with Logan Browning, Allison Williams, and Richard Shepard about protecting The Perfection spoilers by clicking play on the video below.

The Perfection co-stars Alaina Huffman, Mark Kandborg, and Graeme Duffy, and arrives on Netflix this Friday. To be totally safe, you should definitely watch the movie as early as possible – and we can promise you it’s a decision you won’t regret.

Clark Gregg Calls Captain Marvel Trolls ‘Butthurt’

Clark Gregg Calls Captain Marvel Trolls ‘Butthurt’
Coulson's Captain Marvel poster

It's a very exciting time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase Three will come to an end next month with Avengers: Endgame, one year after audiences were left mouths agape at the horrifying twist ending of Infinity War. But before that we have Captain Marvel, the 90's set origin story which flew into theaters this weekend, making a ton of money in the process. In addition to introducing Carol Danvers, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Marvel blockbuster included plenty of familiar faces including Nick Fury, Korath, Ronan, and Phil Coulson.

Clark Gregg is back on the silver screen playing a younger Phil Coulson, who is still a rookie at S.H.I.E.L.D.. Ahead of its release, Captain Marvel fell victim to online trolling, including the film's Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes pages. While measures were made to fix this issue, Gregg had some choice words for those trolls and haters. He recently spoke to the trolling situation, saying:

I don’t know if the expression is butthurt about seeing someone else get a hero that looks like them, but that’s because they’ve always had heroes that looked like them.

Just when you thought you'd heard it all, there's Agent Coulson using the expression "butthurt". But Captain Marvel haters do seem to have a certain axe to grind, with the anger directed at Brie Larson specifically, especially from white men who took umbrage with her previous comments about diversity in the press.

Early into the press tour for Captain Marvel, Brie Larson expressed her disappointment that reviewers and film journalists she'd run into were primary white males. While encouraging inclusion in all aspects of the film world, she majorly ticked off certain fans who felt like she was trying to exclude them from the upcoming blockbuster. Those naysayers took to the internet to explain their issues, and Captain Marvel's reviews and scores ahead of its release plummeted.

In his same conversation with Nerdist, Clark Gregg went on to explain how futile the resistance against Captain Marvel and other female-led properties ultimately is, As he describes it,

There are people that get very bent out of shape about the fact that she’s a woman, and that Brie’s a woman, and wants to see women moving into an equal place in humanity to men. It’s sad. It must be sad to be that kind of dinosaur wandering towards the tar pits.

Phil Coulson isn't here for Captain Marvel trolls, and he's making his feelings known. While some actors have been known to curb their language about haters, Clark Gregg went so far as to call the haters butthurt dinosaurs. So yeah, he's not exactly holding back much regarding the naysayers for the newest Marvel blockbuster.

You can see Clark Gregg's conversation about Captain Marvel below, dinosaurs and all.

Clark Gregg has spent a great number of years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, on both the small and silver screen. As such, he's got a particular level of investment. So when trolling begins, he responded in an honest way.

The backlash for Captain Marvel started back in June of 2018, when Brie Larson was accepting an award at the Crystal + Lucy Awards. While discussing the call for inclusion both in front and behind the camera, Larson discussed how diversity also needed to be reflected in the press. Her original comments read:

[Audiences] are not allowed enough chances to read public discourse on these films by the people that the films were made for. I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work for him about [A] Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him. I want to know what it meant to women of color, to biracial women, to teen women of color, to teens that are biracial.

While uttered many months ago, Brie Larson's comments citing a 40-year-old white dude ended up being the catalyst for online Captain Marvel hatred. Websites like Rotten Tomatoes and Fandango saw a ton of negative comments about the Marvel blockbuster, weeks before it actually arrived in theaters this past weekend. The trolling specifically cited Larson's speech, with white men claiming to boycott the blockbusters in response.

Brie Larson eventually clarified her comments during the press junket for Captain Marvel. Reelblend co-host Kevin McCarthy discussed the controversy with Larson shortly before the movie arrived in in theaters. The Oscar winner had this to say:

What I’m looking for is to bring more seats up to the table. No one is getting their chair taken away. There’s not less seats at the table, there’s just more seats at the table.

While Brie Larson got the chance to expand her comment, there was still plenty of trolling heading to Captain Marvel in the days before it finally arrived. But that controversy doesn't seem to have negatively affected the blockbuster. Brie Larson's Marvel debut made a whopping $153 million domestically during its opening weekend, with pre-sales among the MCU's biggest. The movie has also made $303,285,175 internationally, so Marvel Studios is really raking in the dough with Captain Marvel.

It should be interesting to see if/when the Captain Marvel the trolling ceases, especially as the title character becomes a bigger presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She's expected to have a meaty role in Avengers: Endgame, as the surviving heroes will need all the help they can get in order to face off against Thanos and hopefully reverse the affects of The Snap. Carol Danvers is the strongest hero in the entire shared universe, so it should be especially exciting if she lays the smack down on Josh Brolin's big purple villain sometime during the upcoming blockbuster.

As for Phil Coulson, it's unclear if he'll get another silver screen appearance. While the character is the focus of the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Avengers still believe him to have died at the hands of Loki. But with the future of the MCU after Endgame largely a mystery, it seems anything is possible.

You can see a digitally de-aged Phil Coulson in Captain Marvel, which is in theaters now. Carol Danvers will return to the MCU with Avengers: Endgame on April 26th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Halloween: Rate And Discuss With Spoilers

Halloween: Rate And Discuss With Spoilers

Halloween is no longer just the night Michael Myers came home, it's now the night Laurie Strode came to fight! After much hype and the sequel slate being wiped clean, the direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 classic has finally landed. Which means it's time to rate and discuss this new contender to the horror throne.

Critically, Halloween has done rather well, with our own Eric Eisenberg saying the following in his official review:

It's simultaneously both a wonderful tribute to the story that started it all, and a post-modern reflection that often giddily subverts everything that's perfect about the legacy of the killer Michael Myers.

Of course, this isn't Critic's Corner, it's Rate and Discuss. Which means we want your thoughts about what Halloween did right, what it did wrong and what it should do going forward. Keeping that in mind, we'd like you to review the following discussion questions pertaining to the film. Provide your answers in the comments section below to the following:

Was Halloween (2018) worth the wait?Do you think any of the sequels should have been kept in the continuity? What was your favorite kill in the film? How long did it take you to figure out that Dr. Sartain wasn't quite the good guy?Do you think Allyson is going to become a killer, based on that final shot of the film?Should Halloween continue as a Strode family saga, or is it time to try and bring back the anthology approach?

In addition to the questions we've provided above, we'd like all of you in the audience to provide us with a star rating for Halloween, on the traditional scale of 0 to 5. Using the poll below, please log your rating. Don't forget to share your score, and the reason behind it, with your comments at the end

Finally, as we lay Michael Myers to rest yet another time, let's honor his career of infamous murders with some further reading. In particular, we were able to score some remarks from Halloween creator John Carpenter and Blumhouse's Jason Blum about how they feel the recent horror boom will eventually pan out.

Next, if you're looking to refresh yourself about what to remember from Halloween 1978, we've got you covered with a handy list that plays to that very subject. Plus, we've taken a deep dive into the ending of Halloween 2018 and provided some thoughts on where the series could go next.

Also, we talked to Jamie Lee Curtis about the previously convoluted continuity, and how it just didn't work; something that even co-writer/director David Gordon Green had to admit in letting Halloween II slip out of the official canon. Last, but not least, if you're wondering how Jason Blum feels about further sequels to Halloween, he was very open about his thoughts on the subject.

Happy Halloween to all of you out there reading Rate and Discuss! Have fun with whatever you choose to watch this weekend, but don't forget to be extra careful out there. There's no telling where or when The Shape will return, and you need to be ready.

Technically, Mark Hamill Did Just Share A Star Wars: Episode IX Trailer

Technically, Mark Hamill Did Just Share A Star Wars: Episode IX Trailer

Mark Hamill has had it up to Hoth with Star Wars fans asking him about the Star Wars: Episode IX trailer. So, in typical cheeky fashion, the Luke Skywalker star gave fans what they were asking for -- just not exactly what they wanted:

Well, yeah. That is a trailer. And apparently it was on the Star Wars set when they were filming. So, technically, yes, Mark Hamill shared a Star Wars: Episode IX trailer on Twitter. It's just not the Star Wars: Episode IX trailer fans are eager to see. [UPDATE: Later on March 16, Hamill replied to a fan to say the trailer in the photo was really from Episode VIII. So the nerf herder didn't even really give us an authentic Episode IX trailer. The scandal of it all!]

It may not have been the droid fans were looking for, but it was kind of a boss Jedi move to respond to trailer demands with that post. Approve, Yoda would.

But now we have to talk about Master Hamster. Why hasn't he changed his social media profile to Master Hamster yet? And when is someone going to take this idea and give us a mashup Star Wars trailer starring hamsters? [Does quick Internet search and discovers this.] If you go back and rewatch the Star Wars movies, your mind should now automatically add "Hamster" after every "Master" reference.

In all seriousness, though, Master Hamster is right to tell his Padawans to exercise patience. It's possible a Star Wars: Episode IX trailer will come in April via Star Wars Celebration 2019. If not, the trailer may be tied to Avengers: Endgame's release in theaters. If not, the trailer will just have to arrive at some point before the movie opens on December 20. That's it. Those are the options.

Star Wars: Episode IX has finished filming at this point, as the culmination of the Skywalker Saga. The movie has an actual title, which may be announced at the same time as the first trailer. In the meantime, Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) has been doling out little teases during promotion for his new Netflix movie Triple Frontier.

Mark Hamill has also been entertaining Padawans in interviews and on social media, beyond posting goofy trailer jokes. He's opened up about his feelings on favorite past Star Wars scenes, discussed his recurring fight with Carrie Fisher, and shared his disappointment that Luke, Leia, and Han never got to have a full reunion in the new trilogy.

An obsession with trailers is not new to fans, or exclusive to Star Wars movies, but Episode IX is the end of the Saga and it has been shrouded in secrecy so far. It's understandable that fans are curious to see what footage Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams is willing to show them in his return to the director's chair. For now, we just have Mark Hamill's trailer. As we wait for more, keep up with the upcoming releases with our 2019 movie date schedule.

New Toy Story 4 Clip Has Toys Realizing They're Made Of Fluff

New Toy Story 4 Clip Has Toys Realizing They're Made Of Fluff

One of the themes that has been present throughout the Toy Story series is toys coming to grips with the fact that they are toys and finding out what it means to be a child’s plaything. It appears that theme will continue on in Toy Story 4 to hilarious results. A new clip from Toy Story 4 has some of the movie’s new characters getting an unsettling look at what they’re made of. Take a look:

The stuff on the inside is generally supposed to stay on the inside, and when it comes out it can make for a traumatic experience, as Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key’s Bunny and Ducky find out here. Their shocked and frightened responses to seeing a fellow plush toy bisected by the razor sharp claws of a house cat is quite the turn from earlier in the clip where they had a cavalier and antagonistic attitude towards Buzz Lightyear.

The scene is like something out of a horror movie where there is blood everywhere, only in this instance, it is fluff and, as is often the case with toys in this series, they aren’t really prepared to be confronted with their own mortality and nature in such a dramatic way. It’s a funny clip that shows that these new characters will provide plenty of humor and great lines in the fourth installment of this series.

I also dug the idea that this cat is a true menace, a boogeyman to toys that must be avoided at all costs. It just goes to show that when you leave the comfort and relative safety of the carnival and go on an adventure with Andy’s/Bonnie’s toys you’re going to see some stuff and be put in harm's way.

Maybe the plastic toys that aren’t filled with fluff like Buzz and Bo Peep can take point on this one. Where is Keanu Reeves’ Duke Caboom when you need him?

This clip also gave us another look at Bo Peep, who has become something of an Indiana Jones-like toy in her time since she left Woody and the gang and became a lost toy. She is clearly well equipped for this kind of adventuring (maybe she has a squirt bottle). Whether she is ultimately a good guy or not is an open question though.

Even if it was planned all along, making a sequel to an already perfect trilogy is a tricky proposition, and there is an argument to be made that Disney shouldn’t have done it. We won’t know for sure if Disney was right to do so until we see it, but judging by the trailers and clips we’ve seen from Toy Story 4, it has the heart, humor, great character moments and clever insights into life as a toy that we’ve come to expect from this series.

Toy Story 4 arrives in theaters on June 21. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to keep track of all the big movies headed your way as we approach prime blockbuster season.

How Pixar Figured Out How To Tell More Stories After Toy Story 3’s Ending

How Pixar Figured Out How To Tell More Stories After Toy Story 3’s Ending
Toy Story 3 ending scene on the porch

For a lot of people, Toy Story is an absolutely perfect trilogy. It tells a complete story over the course of three movies and comes to a perfect, and perfectly satisfying, end. However, many of those fans who felt the story had reached a perfect end are now largely concerned, because Toy Story 4 is on the way and it's ready to continue the story we thought was finished.

Last month I got to sit down with Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley and Producers Jonas Rivera and Mark Nielsen, and the three of them spoke to me about how, while they agreed that the ending of Toy Story 3 was something special, it wasn't quite the ending that many people thought it was. Eventually, Toy Story 4 found its story by realizing that the first three movies weren't about Andy, but actually all about Woody, which meant there was clearly story left to be told. As Jonas Rivera told me...

In a weird way, Toy Story 3’s ending helped us, because it felt like a little bit of a misdirection. It was this idea that, if Toy Story 3 is an end. I mean really, the saga of Toy Story is about Woody, right? We kinda kicked that around for a while. He’s the protagonist. Andy’s a driver of the story but Woody is the main character.

It's the simplest idea in the world to be sure, but one that could be easily overlooked, the Toy Story movies are about Woody. Andy is only actually important to the story of the first three because he is important to Woody, we only really see him through Woody's eyes.

Certainly, much like Andy, Woody's story has come full circle, but just because he's back to being the toy of a young child, doesn't mean that Woody's life hasn't drastically changed. Woody now finds himself the property of Bonnie, in a new home with a bunch of new toys in addition to the ones that he's known. In the end, it was the simple idea that "what if this time things were different this time" that led to the story that became Toy Story 4. Again, from Jonas Rivera...

What that was, was just that idea of like, what if you took Woody, and [had] gone through everything that he’s done, tracked it, and he’s always landed on his feet. He literally gets a second chance. What if we could dramatize something about that second chance and show that it wasn’t the same, he’s didn’t land in the same spot. It is different. It is upending his life in ways he hasn’t experienced before.

Pixar creates some pretty interesting worlds, to be sure, and if you look too closely at them, they tend to fall apart, but the simple fact is that in the world of Toy Story, these characters aren't simply toys. They are conscious living being, and that means that just because ownership of them might change, things don't simply reset. The lives of these characters move forward and that's what is happening to Woody in Toy Story 4.

I got a chance to see a significant part of Toy Story 4 while visiting Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, CA last month. As part of that, I can certainly say that Toy Story 4, while still feeling like another Toy Story movie, also very clearly feels like a necessary and important chapter in that larger story. This is a piece of Woody's life that has value and it feels like it will all be a story worth telling.

Early in the new movie we see that Woody isn't the favorite toy that he once was. He's also not the defacto leader of the group. His status in the bedroom isn't what it once was, and while Woody rolls with the punches pretty well, he's clearly found himself in unfamiliar territory.

Director Josh Cooley compared Woody's situation to a parent dealing with "empty nest syndrome" after the kids have moved out of the house. Woody's relationship with Andy, while being his toy, was also that of a caretaker, Woody watched out for Andy and tried to keep him safe. Now that's successfully done that, what's next?

The idea that there still was a "next chapter" for Woody was vital to the trio of Josh Cooley, Jonas Rivera and Mark Nielsen as they were among those who loved the ending of Toy Story 3, and as such, even they only wanted to make Toy Story 4 if there was a compelling reason to do so.

We were among the people saying 'Toy Story 3 was a great ending, so you better not just make another adventure.’ We can’t have this feel like ‘oh, we forgot a part, audience.’

Certainly, the audience doesn't want to feel that way either. Fans almost certainly want to love the new Toy Story, even if they're not so sure about it. We'll all find out whether this story was really necessary when the movie arrives June 21.

JJ Abrams Confirms Star Wars: Episode IX Will Have A Time Jump

JJ Abrams Confirms Star Wars: Episode IX Will Have A Time Jump
Star Wars Episode IX shot

Star Wars Celebration is finally under way and that means we're getting our first real details about Star Wars Episode IX. Stephen Colbert hosted the Episode IX panel and, while there is so much that he can't ask, he did ask director J.J. Abrams about how the movie will start off based on how The Last Jedi ended. Abrams confirmed that the new film will pick up some amount of time after The Last Jedi, and also that all of our heroes will be working together throughout the film. According to Abrams...

The movie doesn't pick up immediately after the last film. Some time has gone by and what I’ll say is that in this movie, and you can tell by that picture is the very beginning of it, but this is an adventure that the group goes on together.

The picture in question is the one up above, that was shown during the Episode IX panel. It shows all of our heroes, Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca, and C-3PO and BB-8, all together outside the Millennium Falcon. This will be where the story begins. Wherever it goes from here, these characters will apparently all go together.

All of the Star Wars saga films saw significant time jumps between episodes. The one exception being Star Wars: The Last Jedi. That movie picked up immediate following the previous entry. Now we know the last film in the arc will be a return to the previous form.

The other thing that has been interesting about the current saga has been the way main characters have been separated. Rey, Finn, and Poe, spent pretty much all of The Last Jedi doing their own thing, but even beyond that, Rey and Poe had never so much as met until the end of the last movie. For fans who liked the dynamic between Rey and Finn, or Poe and Finn for that matter, in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we will get to see them all together again. But now we'll get to see how Rey and Poe work together. for the first time.

More than that, all three of these characters will apparently have already spent some time together when Episode IX begins, so we'll see these relationships after they've already begun to form.

The original report was that Episode IX will pick up one year after Star Wars: The Last Jedi which is certainly enough time for a lot of things to happen on both sides of the war between the Resistance and the First Order. The Resistance was on its last legs in the previous film. Has it been able to rebuild in the interim?

The same amount of time has passed for the First Order, who knows what it looks like after a year under the sole leadership of Kylo Ren.

As a fan of all these new characters, it's exciting to know that they will see this story through to its conclusion together. But who knows what state they will be in when the movie actually begins.

Halle Berry Knows How To 'F--- Up' People After Training For John Wick 3

Halle Berry Knows How To 'F--- Up' People After Training For John Wick 3
John Wick 3 Still with Halle Berry

Some minor spoilers for John Wick 3 can be found throughout this article.

By now, John Wick is a full-fledged franchise with an avid fanbase. On May 17, Lionsgate will release John Wick: Parabellum, the latest movie featuring our badass hero. This time around, the franchise is adding Halle Berry, and although she says she talked her way into the role, the training to play Sofia was intense.  At CinemaCon 2019 Berry admitted she feels comfortable enough having trained for John Wick 3 that she could handle herself in any situation. She noted:

It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my entire life… It also changed my life but I learned skills that I can really use. I feel like if someone attacked me on the street, god bless them, because I know some shit now and I will fuck them up.

During the Lionsgate panel at CinemaCon 2019, Halle Berry admitted that even before the script was written for John Wick: Parabellum she knew she was correct for the role. She met with director Chad Stahelski and convinced him she was a good fit for the role.

But then the training started. The actress talked about how grueling working on John Wick: Parabellum was.

It all showed in the final project.

This week at CinemaCon, footage was debuted from the upcoming threequel. In it, Sofia and John Wick are taking on a large lot of bad guys, as people are wont to do in action movies. In one scene in particular, Halle Berry’s character is kicking a bad guy’s ass when another bad guy starts shooting from above. Sofia literally calls her dog, the dog jumps off the back, scales a giant wall and takes down the bad guy from above. Talk about stunts.

Chad Stahelski is known for action sequences and the new look at the movie didn’t disappoint. Look, if you’ve seen the early footage from the trailer for John Wick: Parabellum, or really either of the other movies, you kind of know what you are getting into, but the reaction when Halle Berry let a dog jump off her back was audible, and I hope everyone reading this has the same experience in the theater.

Later in the clip we saw, John Wick is caught in the middle of taking down myriad bad guys. He runs out of bullets just as his opponent does but manages to reload quickly to take out his opponent and another on the ground.

Although this footage isn't out and about yet, the movie is coming and it's coming soon. Catch the movie starting on May 17, and before you do that be sure to take a look at what we know about Chapter 3 of the saga.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Dark Phoenix And The Secret Life of Pets 2 Reviews

This Rotten Week: Predicting Dark Phoenix And The Secret Life of Pets 2 Reviews
dark phoenix

The first weekend of June 2019 delivers two high-profile movies on the opposite end of the theatrical spectrum. One film is a much-anticipated and much-delayed comic book project, and the other is an animated sequel about talking animals. Get ready for the X-Men franchise's Dark Phoenix and The Secret Life of Pets 2.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

The Dark Phoenix saga, is one of the most popular comic book storylines ever, and its movie treatment is finally hitting the big screen. X-Men: The Last Stand nodded to the arc tethered to an ever-powerful and unhinged Jean Grey who becomes at odds with the X-Men, but that one fell kinda flat. This latest effort from director Simon Kinberg at least pays more tribute to parts of the original storyline, with Jean’s powers coming from a cosmic force and something resembling Emma Frost (though she’s different) taking part in Grey’s corruption.

The rest of Dark Phoenix's plot is very much taking liberties with the original saga in order to contain and connect the narrative, for better or worse. This is the latest movie in Fox's quasi-rebooted X-Men franchise, with the prior effort, Apocalypse (47%), representing a major dud after the critical successes of First Class (86%) and Days of Future Past (90%).

I think Dark Phoenix will finish somewhere in between, though on the lower end. It doesn’t necessarily look amazing or terrible, but I think there’s enough meat to the source material to at least land Simon Kinberg's film on the positive side of the Tomatometer.

What would happen if your pets lived a double life? Sure, they put on all of the airs of standard pet living when their owners are around, but when left to their own devices, stuff just gets weird and wild. That idea was the basis for the original Secret Life of Pets (73%), and now audiences get to run it back a second time, seemingly without many changes at all. The Secret Life of Pets 2 looks nearly identical to the first.

That’s not always the worst thing in the world, to be sure. After all, it’s a kids’ movie with a built-in audience, and the little ones don’t often need a ton of variation. Illumination Entertainment clearly isn’t in Pixar or DreamWorks' class of animation studios, but their celebrity-filled films generally land in the positive zone. Their last few, in addition to the original Pets movie, include Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch (58%), Despicable Me 3 (59%) and Sing (72%). The Secret Life of Pets 2 is sitting at 71% through 31 reviews, but I think it drops over the course of the week.

Recapping last week:

The Rotten Watch scored two for three the last time around. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Predicted: 45% Actual: 39%) landed within range, though that score kept dropping over the course of the week. Critics mostly agreed the movie’s visuals were on point, and the negative takes almost all stemmed from what many agreed was an utter lack of a storyline. Many agreed the script and characters needed plenty of work and ultimately failed the film, which is the first negatively reviewed flick in the Monster-verse franchise.

I admittedly missed the mark on the Ma (Predicted: 41% Actual: 61%) score, mostly because I failed to understand how critics would view the movie. Most agreed that Octavio Spencer really carried the show, while the positive-minded critics appreciating the film’s rather campy style and over-the-top take on the violence and gore. It didn't land for every critic out there, obviously, but it was enough to keep the score in the positive range.

And finally, the Elton John biopic Rocketman (Predicted: 87% Actual: 90%) was the other win, though truth be told, I had a head start on this score. In any case, critics have adored the glossed-up and pointedly sensational (but apparently accurate) take on the rise of the legendary musician through the early years of his accession into pop music's orbit.

Next time around, we’ve got Men in Black International and Shaft. It’s gonna be a Rotten Week!

Luke And Leia Being Siblings Started A Decades-Long Inside Joke With Mark Hamill And Carrie Fisher

Luke And Leia Being Siblings Started A Decades-Long Inside Joke With Mark Hamill And Carrie Fisher
Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill in Star Wars

While the original Star Wars trilogy will always be remembered first and foremost for the big twist revealing the relationship between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, there was also a second Skywalker family twist that few people saw coming. The revelation that Luke and Princess Leia were actually siblings.

Recently, Mark Hamill responded to a fan on Twitter, and revealed that when the actors themselves learned about the twist, it spawned a on going joke between the two that would continue for years to come.

It seems Carrie Fisher quite enjoyed being Star Wars royalty, and either didn't want to share, or just enjoyed telling Mark Hamill that he didn't get to join the club. Considering the sort of friendship that the two apparently had, it was likely the latter.

To be fair, I'm not sure that Carrie Fisher was entirely wrong here. Leia was a princess of Alderaan but was adopted, so her having a sibling shouldn't matter when it comes to the family line. Luke and Leia's mother was a Queen of Naboo, that is true, but on that planet the position of Queen was actually an elected position, not one that came about via bloodline. And Amidala wasn't even Queen when her kids were born, she was a senator of the Galactic Republic.

As far as Lord Vader goes. That title was clearly honorary and did not denote any actual royal position. He was a Lord of the Sith, after all. Since the Sith are only supposed to have two positions, a master and an apprentice, it's not even clear what Vader was actually supposed to be a lord over.

So I'm pretty sure that Luke Skywalker really was just a commoner, though the title of Jedi Knight is nothing to sneeze at.

Still, one can imagine Carrie Fisher frustratingly, and hilariously, putting up with Mark Hamill's various arguments over the years as to why his character should be considered royalty.

While Hamill and Fisher may have been siblings on screen they were clearly close friends off and the loss of the actress has weighed heavily on him. He still continues to remember her and speak openly about her over two years after her death. He must miss asking her questions about his royal status.

While we thought we were witnessing Carrie Fisher's final performance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we know now that wasn't the case. The actress will return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker via the use of inserting unused footage from the previous films in the trilogy. Exactly how that will work remains to be seen, but Fisher was seen in the Episode IX teaser trailer in a shot that's already breaking my heart.

We don't really know what The Rise of Skywalker has in store for us. Perhaps Luke Skywalker will posthumously be given a royal title. I'm sure Carrie Fisher would have loved that.

Aladdin Toy Seemingly Reveals Princess Jasmine's Brand New Song

Aladdin Toy Seemingly Reveals Princess Jasmine's Brand New Song

We’ve finally gotten a look at the whole new world in the live action Aladdin. We’ve seen blue genies and heard a bit of the classic music that will be reinvented for the 2019 movie onscreen. However, what we hadn’t really heard was any new music from the upcoming flick. That all seems to have changed this weekend thanks to –did you guess it?—a toy leak. Take a listen.

Please note, if you are having trouble hearing the music, you may need to turn the volume up considerably.

The voice on the track certainly sounds like Naomi Scott, the actress who is voicing Princess Jasmine in Aladdin. We’ve known for a while that Aladdin would be getting new music. In particular, Princess Jasmine will get her own song “Speechless,” which was written by Pasek and Paul (Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who just so happen to have written music for La La Land) and the lyrics indicate this should be how her solo song sounds.

The doll was found in a store and recorded, so it’s certainly not as solid or booming as it will likely be in theaters, but if you are wanting a snippet of what new content you should be getting with Aladdin, it more than does the trick.

Naomi Scott previously said about “Speechless” that it was about giving the character more of a voice as a leader, noting,

I mean, how timely is that? [Jasmine's] not perfect. She doesn't get it right all the time. It's just showcasing that she gets to a point where, 'It's not going to be easy and I may lose this fight, but I need to step up. Of course I'm incredibly connected to it, but I really do feel like it's going to touch upon some things and hopefully speak to young girls out there. That's my aim, always.’

If you’ve caught the latest trailer for Disney’s Aladdin, you should already have heard a bit of Will Smith’s rendition of “Friend Like Me,” not to mention Aladdin and Jasmine singing the sweeping ballad “A Whole New World.” If you haven’t taken a look at the full trailer yet, be sure to check it out.

Toy leaks often reveal big and minor things about upcoming movies. When it’s a movie that is as high profile as Aladdin and it’s a movie that is bound to have a ton of merchandise being made available ahead of release, it’s not real surprise that things like musical moments might get spoiled.

In this case, however, it just makes me more excited to hear a better quality version of “Speechless.” If you feel the same way, you won’t have too long to wait. The new musical live action film will be hitting theaters on May 24.

It’s only one of several live action Disney films hitting theaters this year. You can take a look at the full list of all the projects in the works with our updated guide.

Jesse Eisenberg Explains Why The Zombieland: Double Tap Cast Is Working Extra Hard

Jesse Eisenberg Explains Why The Zombieland: Double Tap Cast Is Working Extra Hard

Aside from superheroes, one of the most popular macguffins in entertainment world are zombies. The undead have captivated audiences since back in 1968's Night of the Living Dead, with endless adaptations coming on both the silver and small screen. While The Walking Dead may have revolutionized zombies for the modern audience, Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland arrived in theaters years before Rick Grimes woke up in the apocalypse.

The zombie comedy hit is finally getting a sequel with Zombieland: Double Tap, which is set to arrive this October. The four leading actors are set to reprise their roles in the highly anticipated follow-up: Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, and Jesse Eisenberg. Eisenberg recently revealed that everyone involved in Double Tap is working especially hard. After joking about phoning it in, he said:

No, the opposite. Were working so hard. Its one of these movies that, people loved it for personal reasons. So its not just a big hit movie. People love it for personal reasons so you want to make sure its as funny and as personal as the other one.

It looks like Jesse Eisenberg and the rest of the Zombieland: Double Tap cast truly understands just how beloved the first movie is. As such, they're taking special care to provide the same mixture of laughs and heart with Ruben Fleischer's sequel.

Jesse Eisenberg's comments to Movieweb will no doubt excite the many fans of the first Zombieland movie. The blockbuster defied genre, and made light out of the zombie apocalypse in a fresh and exciting way, while also making an impressive amount of money in theaters. The years since Zombieland arrived have elevated the project to cult status, so the pressure is on to deliver something as unique and twisted as the first movie.

Director Ruben Fleischer will be back to direct Zombieland: Double Tap, fresh off the massive success of his comic book movie Venom. He brought his same unique tone and vision to that Sony blockbuster, so he should hopefully have the momentum to bring back his zombie franchise to theaters. And with the original cast also returning, the pieces of the puzzle have presumably been set up for a great sequel.

The quartet of returning actors aside, there is some new and exciting talent being brought into the franchise in Zombieland: Double Tap. Newcomers including Rosario Dawson, Silicon Valley's Thomas Middleditch, Luke Wilson, and Zoe Deutch (Why Him?). It's a significantly larger cast than the first film, so it appears the surviving humans will factor heavily into the upcoming film's narrative. While Zombieland was mostly the four people vs the dead, it should be interesting to see how the world has changed since we last saw those returning characters.

Zombieland: Double Tap will arrive in theaters on October 11th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
