The Funny Way Aladdins Mena Massoud Goofed During His Introduction To Will Smith

Getting the opportunity to meet a prominent figure in any work field is a universally intimidating experience to which we can all relate, but its easy to imagine that its particularly nerve-wracking for actors. After all, becoming a prominent figure in the performing arts means that they are one of the most famous people on the planet, and being around anyone with that kind of popularity and power can put a person a bit off their game. This in mind, its pretty easy to understand why Mena Massoud made an awkward mistake the first time he had the opportunity to meet Will Smith in the making of Guy Ritchies Aladdin.

So what exactly happened? To put it plainly, Massouds introduction to Smith wasnt so much an introduction, as the young actor actually completely forgot to introduce himself. This is a funny story that I had the opportunity to learn this past weekend during the Los Angeles press day for Aladdin, as Massoud told me about his first time meeting the headliner of the new fantasy blockbuster:

Yeah, I definitely geeked out. The first time I met him was during prep before we started shooting, and I was so nervous I forgot to say my name when I went up and introduced myself. So really I didn't introduce myself. So I had to backtrack and go back and it was a little awkward for me. But it's a dream come true. Me and the boys would get together when we were younger and put on a Will Smith movie. So it's amazing.

So its not the most embarrassing situation weve heard about behind-the-scenes in Hollywood, but one can also picture it as a blush-inducing moment.

Mena Massoud does have a fair amount of acting experience under his belt, his first role being in a 2011 episode of the television series Nikita but Aladdin is definitely a big deal for his career. Not only is it the first major blockbuster of which hes been a part, but its also the first opportunity that hes had to play the titular role in anything. It was also his first chance to work alongside an A-lister on the level of Will Smith, so one can fully understand why he would totally forget to say his own name during the initial introduction.

Awkward as that may have been at the start, fortunately things definitely worked out well in the end. The relationship between Mena Massouds Aladdin and Will Smiths character, Genie, is one of the most important in the film, and its also one of the best parts of the finished product. They have a great back and forth together, and youd never guess watching the movie that things got off to a bit of an odd start when they first met.

Apparently China Is Really, Really Into Green Book

This year’s recent Oscars ceremony may have ended in shock for many when Green Book took home Best Picture, but the movie's Oscar success has definitely been beneficial. Since the win, Green Book has seen been showing off its “Oscar halo” in 63 markets – including a 121% boost at the domestic box office and has just become No. 1 in China.

That’s right, China loves Green Book! The 2019 Best Picture opened at an impressive $17.2 million opening weekend behind How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (which made $33 million) and Alita: Battle Angel ($24 million) before rising to the top spot on Monday with an overall $25 million by Wednesday, per The Hollywood Reporter. Green Book is now the country’s second highest-grossing Best Picture winner, behind Titanic.

The movie is also scoring seriously high reviews from Chinese critics and moviegoers. For example, the movie received a 9.6 out of 10 rating on Maoyan, a Chinese ticketing app. But wait… Green Book is an all-American story about race relations in the deep South. What about that screams an instant hit for China? There are a few reasons why.

The answer is timing. The Academy Awards are well-followed in China and the Best Picture winner opened in theaters across the country just three days after the telecast. The award show created some effective buzz for Green Book, since the film took home three Oscars out of five nominations – including a second Supporting Actor win for Mahershala Ali and Best Original Screenplay.

Additionally, the richest man in China, tech tycoon and CEO of Alibaba Pictures, Jack Ma, was an investor on Green Book and made it well known to Chinese media. The film studio has also had a hand in investing Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Star Trek Beyond which made $181 and $65 million in China, respectively.

Another contributing factor to Green Book’s success in China is the same reason why the film was met with backlash and controversy over from American audiences. Many have criticized the movie for its mediocre approach in presenting the complexity of race relations and its use of the tiresome “white savoir” trope.

Green Book was also called out by the family of Don Shirley (played by Mahershala Ali), who called out the movie for being “full of lies” and the film is based off one of the film’s writers Nick Vallelonga recalling his own memories from his father (played by Viggo Mortenson). One important perspective of the race relations movie may seem to be missing due to this.

Many moviegoers in China don’t have intricate understanding of America’s complicated ties with racism, just as with Americans, many of us don’t claim to understand the history of the Chinese people. So what might have seemed “uninspired” to many in Green Book, may have been just China’s speed ­– as they needed little background knowledge to follow along.

Factors such as these is a good reminder of why some Hollywood movies become hits in unexpected markets and Green Book is the latest example.

Keanu Reeves has been playing John Wick on the big screen for five years now, and he’s about to present his third outing as the character with John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. In that time the actor has also passed the big 5-0 milestone, and would be forgiven if he allowed his stunt double to do plenty of his action scenes for him.

That doesn’t seem to be the case, however. According to Keanu Reeves himself, 90% of the action you’ll see in a John Wick franchise movie is really him. He said:

I do all of the action. I’m 90 percent of what’s happening there. I’m maintaining the connection to the audience, and with the story. If it’s wacky/crazy stuff, you’re just like, ‘Oh my god, what did I just see?’

Speaking during a recent interview, Keanu Reeves revealed he does actually do a huge variety of the stunts in the movie. There are plenty of stuntmen and women who are credited for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – in particular there are special credits for motorcycle sequences as well – so it would be remiss if we didn't note there are plenty of men and women who do create additional stunts for these films.

Still, it sounds like when the actors can learn sequences, they make an effort to do so in the world of John Wick.

That said, if you’ve kept up with the franchise at all, you should know that John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum director is Chad Stahelski, who started out as Keanu Reeves’ stunt double early in his career and knows his way around an action sequence. Chad Stahelski first worked with Keanu Reeves way back when The Matrix was being made. His career with the now 54-year-old actor has been a long and fruitful one, leading into this weekend’s release.

Intriguingly, stunt work led by actors seems to be a common trend on the John Wick sets. Common previously also said he did an incredible “90%” of his own stunts on the set of John Wick: Chapter 2, confirming what Keanu Reeves said here in his interview with Today.

Halle Berry has also been discussing stunt work and the insane shape that she had to get in for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. She noted that she even broke three ribs while she was training to keep up with Keanu Reeves in the latest sequel. Per Berry:

It was a little terrifying at first because he’s so damn good, and I wanted to be on the same level as him. I didn’t want to disappoint him. I broke three ribs when I was rehearsing for John Wick… It’s like a badge of honor for me, we don’t know how it happened.

As for Keanu Reeves, the actor also admitted that these days filming action sequences is a little bit different than the earlier days of his career. He said:

One of the questions that fans frequently have regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe films is just how often other parts of that universe influence any given project. Are writers and directors required to include particular elements in a movie in order to move the larger universe forward in the correct way? In at least one case, it seems there was a strong collaboration, as the team behind the most recent, and the upcoming Avengers films were involved in crafting the end credits sequence of Ant-Man and the Wasp. According to director Peyton Reed...

We all talked---it was Paul [Rudd], [Ant-Man and the Wasp writers] Chris McKenna and Eric Summers---and we sat down with the Russo Brothers and the screenwriters Marcus and McFeely about the timeline, but there was still a discussion with our movie in terms of who was going to get dusted, who was going to be on the parking deck.

While the general word from Marvel is that writers and directors have a remarkable amount of freedom to craft their own stories, Ant-Man and the Wasp found itself in a unique position, sandwiched as it was between the two big Avengers films. While the movie as a whole was a standalone story that didn't need to take the rest of the universe into account, the end credits sequence was a different story.

Decisions needed to be made regarding who survived "The Snap" and who did not as well as who we actually saw survive and not. These decisions could potentially play a part in what happens in Avengers: Endgame, and since all these movies were in production at around the same time, there needed to be a clear understanding from everybody involved.

Apparently, as Peyton Reed tells Collider, there was some discussion about potentially including more of Ant-Man and the Wasp's characters in the final credit sequence as well., though that was shot down. Interestingly, it appears that the basic structure of the scene itself was actually an idea form the Avengers: Infinity War screenwriters.

At one point we talked about, 'Is Bill Foster up there? Is Ava Starr up there? Do they all dust out?' but then it became a percentages thing. It's supposed to be 50%, so it can't be, 'Really? All of them went? That seems different than what I saw in Infinity War?' There were certain things that we knew. Marcus and McFeely pitched an idea for the scene and we all kind of built off that idea. It involved Scott and it involved Luis' van and a new Quantum Tunnel 2.0, but it was very collaborative thing.

It appears that whoever was on the roof of that garage was going to end up dead, and thus including too many other characters would have made it seem odd when only 50% of people were supposed to get dusted. Scott Lang was going to get stuck in the Quantum Realm one way or another.

On the plus side, since we actually lost 75% of the people in the post-credits scene, the math would indicate that more of our other favorite Ant-Man and the Wasp characters are probably ok, so things are looking good for Luis.
