Could Clint Eastwood's Next Movie Land Over At Disney/Fox?

Could Clint Eastwood's Next Movie Land Over At Disney/Fox?
Clint Eastwood

Disney is still figuring things out when it comes to the new Fox studio that the company now owns. There were many projects in various stages of development, and it's likely that not all of them will continue moving forward. However, one project that looks like it may have a chance at life is The Ballad of Richard Jewell and Clint Eastwood is looking at directing.

The Ballad of Richard Jewell was already a project under consideration under the previous 20th Century Fox administration. It now belongs to the new Disney/Fox and Clint Eastwood has been in talks with the new studio about helming the film.

Not every Fox project is doing as well under the new guard. Wes Ball's Mouse Guard, which was very near going into active production, was just stopped by Disney/Fox. The project may get picked up elsewhere, but the new company is already making the call to close down projects it doesn't want. This project, especially if Clint Eastwood does agree to direct, looks to be one Disney/Fox wants to move forward with.

The Ballad of Richard Jewell is based on a Vanity Fair news article of the same name about Richard Jewell, who was a security guard during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics who recognized a suspicious package, which turned out to be a bomb, and saved many people in the process. However, after the events were over Jewell was looked at as a possible suspect. This information became public and Jewell's life was turned upside down. While he was eventually exonerated, his life, and health, were never the same and he died of heart failure at the age of 44.

The Ballad of Richard Jewell is a project that's been around for a while. The script was written by Billy Ray, who previous wrote Captain Philips. Several years ago, Jonah Hill was attached to star as Richard Jewell and Leonardo DiCaprio was considering coming on board to play Jewell's lawyer and friend. Paul Greengrass had considered taking on directing the project, but it never went anywhere. Deadline reports that Eastwood would be looking to put together his own cast with an eye toward beginning production as early as this summer.

Richard Jewell feels like just the sort of character that would be of interest to Clint Eastwood. Many of his recent directorial projects have been stories based on real people. Sully, 15:17 to Paris, American Sniper, and even Eastwood's most recent film, The Mule, in which he also starred, were all based on real people. Clearly, there's an interest in dramatizing these real events and the story surrounding Richard Jewell is one that certainly lends itself to drama.

If The Ballad of Richard Jewell does go into production this summer we could see it as early as the first half of 2020. Although, on paper, this one could have the potential to be an awards contender, which would likely give it a late 2020 release.

What Marvel Should Do With The Fantastic Four And The X-Men, According To Matthew Vaughn

What Marvel Should Do With The Fantastic Four And The X-Men, According To Matthew Vaughn
X-Men and Fantastic Four

Matthew Vaughn’s filmmaking resume is packed with comic book adaptations. He kicked off this part of his career with 2010’s Kick-Ass, and in recent years he’s been the driving force behind the Kingsman film series. But Vaughn also has some experience working in the Marvel realm by directing X-Men: First Class and producing the Fantastic Four reboot.

Thanks to Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox, both properties now reside under Marvel Studios and are expected to be incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point. With that in mind, Matthew Vaughn suggested that Marvel bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU as soon as possible, but not to rush featuring the X-Men in this franchise. He explained:

As the man that produced the last terrible Fantastic Four - and I will say that because I said it from day one, but no one listened to me -- I think Fan Four is, for me, it’s the live action version of The Incredibles. It’s probably the most, I think, commercially viable Marvel Comic. Kevin Feige will get ahold of that and probably make a masterpiece. And the X-Men world, I imagine that might get put on ice for a little bit. I think it needs a little bit of breathing room. They made a hell of a lot since First Class, if you think about it. Fan Four would be the thing I'd like to see them do next. Disney and Fan Four and Marvel is a really potent combination.

Matthew Vaughn has a point. Critically speaking, the Fantastic Four movies have never been hits, with the 2015 reboot being almost universally panned and bombing at the box office, which resulted in the sequel being scrapped. The X-Men franchise, on the other hand, has been going steadily since 2000, with next month’s Dark Phoenix wrapping up the main film series and The New Mutants finally arriving next year.

The Fantastic Four haven’t had the opportunity to shine like the X-Men have, so if one must be prioritized over the other, Matthew Vaughn's call of introducing the Fantastic Four first seems reasonable. It’s only a matter of time before the X-Men are brought in too, but considering that the Fox era of X-Men movies is will soon finish, it’s not a bad idea to let that property sit on the proverbial shelf for a bit before reintroducing these characters to the public.

During his appearance on the ReelBlend podcast, Matthew Vaughn also talked about how well making a period piece Fantastic Four movie would work, specifically one set in the 1960s, as Marvel’s First Family and many of the comic book company’s most famous characters were introduced that decade. In Vaughn’s words:

That’s what I did with the X-Men, though. These ideas were born -- sort of the Fan Four and the nuclear family and the dysfunctional family and science -- it's an easier time. I mean, superhero films in the modern world … everything in the modern world, it's harder and harder to do. Because you know, the technology, it's all out there. You know, Iron Man’s suit doesn't seem that far away anymore. It’s sort of odd. The Iron Man suit when Iron Man came out [in the comics] was awesome. That was probably late sixties, early seventies. Iron Man, I don't know when that came out. It's easier because everything was sort of black and white, everything was more bad versus good. You knew what was what was what by then because there were boundaries and clearer horizons. So yeah, I love a period piece. I've just done another period movie [in the Kingsmen prequel]. It's really good fun.

The MCU has dabbled in period pieces with the 1940s-set Captain America: The First Avenger and the 1990s-set Captain Marvel, plus various flashbacks, so it’s not like a 1960-set Fantastic Four movie would be dismissed right out the gate. That being said, obviously whatever creative team is working on such a story would need to find a way to bring Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Thing and The Human Torch to the present day so they can interact with all the other MCU heroes.

You can listen to Matthew Vaughn’s full ReelBlend appearance below:

As things stand now, there are no official plans for an MCU-set Fantastic Four or X-Men movie, but rest assured, when a concrete announcement about either of the two is made, we here at CinemaBlend will let you know about it. For now, there are plenty of other upcoming MCU movies to look forward to, from Black Widow and The Eternals to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Black Panther 2, as well as the various Disney+ series in development.

Matthew Vaughn’s next directorial effort, Kingsman: The Great Game, will be released on February 14, 2020, but he also produced the Elton John-focused musical Rocketman, which hits theaters tomorrow, May 31.

Rocketman Has Screened, See What People Are Saying

Rocketman Has Screened, See What People Are Saying
Taron Egerton as Elton John in Rocketman

On the heels of the worldwide box office phenomenon known as Bohemian Rhapsody comes another tribute to a popular music icon who rose to fame in the ‘70s and loved to don a glittery get-up: Rocketman. Taron Egerton stars as Elton John in a biopic/musical framed around his breakthrough years.

Ahead of its theatrical release in a couple weeks, Rocketman has now premiered at Cannes Film Festival in France to a standing ovation from the crowd. That’s certainly a good sign! But did it lift off and soar in critics' eyes? Let’s take a look at some of the first reactions about the fantasy musical.

CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell is now in London doing interviews for Rocketman. Before that, he had a chance to see the movie and shared his rave review:

We can talk about Rocketman? It’s FANTASTIC. A wonderful, emotional and uplifting musical that weaves Elton John’s classics into a heartbreaking ode to fame. Taron Egerton is BRILLIANT and Dexter Fletcher stages jaw-dropping musical interludes. A home run!

That's a great start! Rebecca Keegan of The Hollywood Reporter sounds like she was absolutely floored by the film. Take a look:

Hot damn, Taron Egerton is the real deal. Rocketman is a musical about picking yourself up off your ass and Taron delivers the sweat, grit and vulnerability it needs.

Along with loving Taron Egerton’s iteration of the music sensation, she praised it for the “I’m Still Standing” message. The actor worked closely with the Elton John himself, even having to sing and act with John in front of him, which he understandably found to be extremely intimidating. The iconic musician has been quite supportive of Egerton though.

Not everyone was completely convinced by Egerton’s performance though. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw felt he didn’t quite hit every note with these words:

Dexter Fletcher’s Rocketman is a good-natured biopic-slash-jukebox-musical with Taron Egerton gamely doing a middleweight impersonation, more comfortable with the lighter side, better at the tiaras than the tantrums.

When it comes to the dramatic aspects of Rocketman, Bradshaw didn’t feel like he sold it. Conversely, Stuart Oldham of Variety specifically pointed out the more somber moments of the film hitting a high for him. Here’s what he said:

Rocketman is fantastic, a musical drama that hits all the right notes, especially the sad ones.

Elton John’s husband of 26 years, John Furnish, recently watched the flick and said his personal struggles at the beginning of his career and prior to their life together made him want to give John a hug. Considering some of these reactions, as an audience we may collectively be feeling the same way as the film discusses his stint in rehab and sexual identity.

A couple months ago, there were rumors that Paramount had cut a “nude cuddle” between Taron Egerton’s Elton and Richard Madden’s John Reid due to the studio pulling back on the film’s adult content. This reaction from NY Times’ Kyle Buchanan indicates Rocketman does not steer away from portraying his sexuality. In his words:

Pleasantly surprised that Rocketman does not skimp on the gay sex, but the gayest thing about the movie is still Taron Egerton insisting he’s fat when he isn’t.

One primary criticism of last year’s Bohemian Rhapsody was the way it shied away from completely exploring Mercury’s relationships with men – Rocketman won’t be making that mistake. Richard Madden’s role is also gaining recognition as well. Here’s what Anne Thompson of IndieWire had to say:

Richard Madden is swaggeringly hot as Elton John’s manager John Reid who was also the villain in Bohemian Rhapsody. He really would make a great James Bond.

Comparisons to the Queen biopic just keep coming up! In addition to the film sharing a bit of the same subject matter and Dexter Fletcher being involved as director in both, it also includes one of the same villains. To round out the reactions, check out Ramin Setoodeh’s thoughts:

Rocketman is thankfully better than Bohemian Rhapsody. But it also feels like a Broadway musical that was forced into a movie. Or, The Greatest Showman set at the Abbey.

It looks like the movie is a lot more musical than biopic, but it still works better than the Queen film in his opinion. The Variety bureau chief also caught a sweet video of Taron Egerton’s own reaction upon seeing the film and watching the audience’s reaction at Cannes. Take a look:

The actor looks both happy and overwhelmed at his Rocketman debut! The 29-year-old actor is still fairly new to the industry and still best known for his Kingsman role. After the premiere, he and Elton John took to the stage to perform the song “Rocketman” together, captured by The Hollywood Reporter:

Wow! The actor has found a duet partner in Elton John before when they sang “Tiny Dancer” at an Oscars party in February. The pair look energized by the film’s screening in this performance. It was no doubt an emotional day for the both of them seeing their work on the film (and for John, quite literally his life’s work) finally premiere.

Rocketman hits theaters on May 31 and is expected to open at around $20 million during its first weekend as Godzilla: King of the Monsters presumably tops the musical.

How If Beale Street Could Talk Reminds Regina King Of A Classic TV Show

How If Beale Street Could Talk Reminds Regina King Of A Classic TV Show
if beale street could talk

If you've seen If Beale Street Could Talk then you know that it's one of the most original love stories ever put on the big screen. The film focuses on Tish Rivers (KiKi Layne), a 19-year-old pregnant woman whose life long friend and now fiancé, Fonny (Stephan James) has been imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. As we follow Tish and Fonny's love story, we also see the efforts of Tish and her family to prove Fonny's innocence as the young couple struggles to keep their love alive through near impossible circumstances.

While the movie is far from a comedy, it turns out that Oscar-winning star Regina King, who plays Tish's mom Sharon, actually feels that the strong family bonds exemplified by the Rivers family (which is also comprised of Colman Domingo as dad Joseph and Teyonah Parris and sister Ernestine) remind her of those of a popular sitcom family from a classic show. Here's what King had to say:

The Rivers family is a family that exists, but even now, in 2018 when this comes out, we don't get the opportunity to see that family; where the father is there and the mother is there, and the children. You know Good Times? It's like that. That was a [TV] family in the '70s. They were poor, but there was a lot of laughter in the home, music in the home. I always say the Rivers are very similar to the Evans family!

I have to say, as I was watching the special features on the Blu-Ray for If Beale Street Could Talk (which is out now), I was very surprised to find that Regina King could make any comparison between the Rivers family in this sad, yet hopeful and lyrical love story and the Evans family from Good Times, which ran from 1974 through 1980 on CBS. But, after seeing how King manages to make the connection I can certainly understand how she came to such a conclusion.

As King mentioned, the Rivers and Evans families both share an easy closeness and are capable of having lots of fun with each other. Both families also deal with poverty and the dire circumstances that can cause, especially when things go wrong, but each group is also completely dedicated to supporting its members and showering them with as much love as possible to help them get through all the trials that life throws at them.

As you might imagine, getting a cast together that feels like a real family can be difficult, and director Barry Jenkins, who spoke about If Beale Street Could Talk during the same featurette, explained how the cast became like a real family during shooting.

Filming it, it was really important in the casting process to cast these actors who could literally, legitimately, you know, become a family. So, casting Regina King and Colman Domingo and Teyonah Parris, like, if you were on set with us you would see they all kind of huddled around KiKi, because this is KiKi's first role. She was literally the baby of the family.

No wonder the positive feelings of love and never-ending support for one another, no matter the situation, came through so well in If Beale Street Could Talk. If you want to check the movie out for the first time, or give it another watch, it's available right now on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital HD.

How Candyman's Jordan Peele And Director Nia DaCosta Bonded Through Horror Fandom

How Candyman's Jordan Peele And Director Nia DaCosta Bonded Through Horror Fandom
Candyman poster closeup

This past weekend saw the phenomenal release of Jordan Peele’s Us, and the good news for those already hungry for more horror stories from the filmmaker is that he has many irons in the fire. For example, there is the new version of The Twilight Zone that he is producing and hosting for CBS All Access – but on the feature side of things there is the tremendously exciting new take on Candyman that he is making with writer/director Nia DaCosta.

News of DaCosta’s hiring came just a couple months after the announcement about the project’s development late last year, and also just a few months after the world premiere of her feature debut, Little Woods (which played at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival). In the time since, not much has been revealed about the direction of the new Candyman, but while sitting down with DaCosta this past weekend, I learned about a key ingredient in her collaboration with Jordan Peele:

I think something that we connect on a lot was the way we view horror, and our love of horror. I love Candyman, but also just like breaking down what horror is, how it's represented, what it means, and why it's important. I think we really connected on that, and so that's a lot of what our conversations have been about… that I can tell you (laughs). It's been great. He's a wonderful creator, collaborator, human, artist.

With the film set to be released in a few weeks, Little Woods held its Los Angeles press day on Sunday, and it was at the end of my interview with Nia DaCosta and star/executive producer Tessa Thompson that I inquired about the development of her upcoming horror remake. Specifically I asked about the conversations that she had been having with Jordan Peele, and she explained how a shared vision of what horror can do and why it’s effective is really driving their work together on Candyman.

Naturally I felt compelled to follow-up by asking about her philosophy in the genre, and what she stressed was both engaging with the audience, and also telling stories that bring home important messages in subversive ways. It’s a key staple of horror that has existed from the beginning, and a tradition that Nia DaCosta plans to uphold in her venture. Said the filmmaker,

What I like about genres like thrillers, and why I think tensions are important for all movies, including dramas, it's physicalizing what the characters are feeling for the audience. That's really important, and gets the audience to engage and to lean in. And then with horror you can sneak in messages. You know sneak in what you think about the world around you, and how actually horrifying the world is. You get to hide it in these layers. 'This is about a ghost, but really it's about paranoia and a woman's place in the world.' Or, you know, 'This is about a guy meeting his girlfriend's parents, but really it's about... Actually a guy meeting his girlfriend's parents.' (laughs)

Based on a short story by Clive Barker that was first adapted in 1992, Candyman centers on an urban legend that is being investigated by a college student – specifically one about a violent entity who appears and attacks anyone who dares to say his name five times into a mirror. Yahya Abdul-Matten II, who has earned notoriety in recent months thanks to his performance in James Wan’s Aquaman and Jordan Peele’s Us, is currently the only member of the cast, set to play the titular villain.

With Nia DaCosta directing and Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld writing the script, Candyman is currently on track to be released on June 12, 2020 – produced by Monkeypaw Productions and MGM. For those of you who want to get a taste of what DaCosta is bringing to the table as a filmmaker, however, (and I highly recommend that you do), Little Woods is set up with distribution from Neon, and will be getting a limited release starting on April 19th.

Maleficent 2 Just Got Pushed Way Up In The Theatrical Schedule

Maleficent 2 Just Got Pushed Way Up In The Theatrical Schedule

It took a long time to get a sequel to Maleficent off the ground and while it's been half a year since the project wrapped filming, it was still going to be more than a year before the movie hit theaters, with the film set to release in May of 2020. However, this morning Disney revealed a few small pieces of very interesting information. One was the film's official title, and another was a brand new release date that moves the film way up the calendar. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is now coming out this year, on October 18, 2019.

Why This Release Date Is A Big ChangeWhen release dates for movies change, it's almost exclusively delays. When films do have their release pushed up, it might be by a couple of weeks, or at the most a couple of months. Seeing a movie jump more than a year up the calendar is unusual.

From a post-production stand point it's probably not an issue. The film is still coming out more than a year after filming wrapped. The bigger issue with the release date move is that Disney is moving Maleficent: Mistress of Evil into an already very crowded year, one that's been made crowded mostly by Disney itself.

This will make Maleficent: Mistress of Evil the fourth Disney live action remake -- or in this case, sequel to one -- coming out this year alone. Dumbo hits later this month, then Aladdin in May, The Lion King in July, and now Maleficent in October.

And that's just the movies based on previous animated material. 2019 is a huge year for Disney, from Captain Marvel arriving this week, to Avengers: Endgame to Frozen II to Star Wars: Episode IX, the House of Mouse is going to have no problem bringing in a massive box office this year, The studio didn't exactly need the help.

Having said all that, there is something of a gap in that schedule, as Disney didn't have anything on the calendar between August's Artemis Fowl and November's Frozen II so it's not like Disney will be cannibalizing its own box office here. And a pre-Halloween release date for Disney's biggest villain isn't the worst idea in the world. Nothing of note was set to release that weekend. Zombieland 2 and the animated Addams Family movie are set to hit the weekend before.

Maleficent 2 Also Got A First LookIn addition to the title and release date, a poster for the new film was also released. Check it out below.

The Title Calls Back To Sleeping BeautyIn Disney's original Sleeping Beauty Maleficent refers to herself as the "Mistress of All Evil." While the title calls back to that, don't expect Angelina Jolie's character to be too evil. She's not technically the villain of the story. That role is reportedly been taken by Ed Skrein.

Although, the use of the title with the new release date makes one wonder if the new movie will be something closer to horror than the original. It's certainly setting itself up to imply a very dark movie.

The success of the original Maleficent is largely responsible for the influx of live-action remakes that Disney has gone all-in on. The movie was a smash hit. The sequel will also be a return for Angelina Jolie who hasn't been on screen since the year after the original Maleficent came out. If fans are still hungry for the character or the actress then we could see yet another big hit in what is already going to be a year of big hits for Disney.

6 Questions We Still Have Before Seeing Shazam!

6 Questions We Still Have Before Seeing Shazam!
Shazam movie wizard

DC is coming off of a major win after the massive success of Aquaman, and we'll see if lightning can strike twice with Shazam! The newest DC film is promising the same light and fun tone as Aquaman, and early reviews for Shazam! have been really positive. We'll know for sure next month if Shazam! will be a hit, but in the meantime, we are left to wonder on the last remaining details that the film has kept hidden.

Shazam! finds orphan Billy Batson (Asher Angel) chosen as the next champion of the wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou), granting him incredible powers that transform him into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi). It's a recipe for a really fun fish-out-of-water (or body) story and as with any superhero blockbuster, details have been kept extra slim. There are still plenty of questions left unanswered, and we've got the six most important ones we'd like to know listed below.

Why Does The Wizard Need A New Champion?

The basic concept of Shazam is that a wizard names him as his next champion and the protector of all magic, granting powers that put young Billy Batson on the level of Superman. In the comics, the reason tends to vary as to WHY the Wizard chooses Billy, but it's usually because he has a pure heart. The Wizard's reasons aren't clear in the movie, but we also have to wonder why he needs a new champion in the first place. Does he need to pass on his power before he dies? Is some kind crisis looming and the world will need a new champion? Whatever the case, the Wizard better have a pretty good reason for picking a 14-year-old orphan to fight his battles.

What's The Deal With Sivana?

Every hero needs a villain, and for Shazam! that villain is Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong). In the comics, Sivana is a decrepit mad scientist obsessed with magic. Usually, he doesn't have any powers, though the latest comic reboot gave him the ability to "see" magic. The movie decides to kick it up a notch and really shoots him full of steroids. Sivana has powers on par with Shazam, so question one is how did he get these abilities? Questions two is what does he want them for? Sivana is clearly up to no good, and word on the street is that he has a revamped backstory (which I won't spoil for you here), but it's unclear exactly what his true motives are and what he hopes to accomplish.

Will A Justice League Member Cameo?

The DCEU has adopted a strategy of keeping its various superhero films standalone rather than referencing or setting up other DCEU films. That worked out for Wonder Woman and Aquaman, but that hasn't stopped rumors that Shazam! might have a cameo from a Justice Leaguer. Superman (Henry Cavill) has been the popular choice and there are rumors that a Superman cameo was shot for the film, though, it's been a subject of debate whether  Cavill was involved or not. While I don't think Shazam! needs a Superman cameo, it would still be really cool to see. Shazam! already references other DC characters, so why not have one actually show up?

How Does Black Adam Factor Into All This?

Before they had begun working on Shazam!, Warner Bros. had already lined up Dwayne Johnson to play classic Shazam anti-hero Black Adam. There have been tons of different reports over the status of Black Adam and what Warner Bros. wants to do with him, with a solo film looking like the most popular option. However, Black Adam is heavily involved in the Shazam mythology and backstory, and it's tough to see the Shazam! movie going its whole runtime without Adam factoring in somewhat. Will he just be referenced, or did Johnson film a secret cameo? Johnson is one of the biggest stars on the planet, so it's hard to imagine that Warner doesn't capitalize on that soon.

Is There Going To Be A Talking Tiger Or Not?!

Forget Superman and Black Adam. Where's the talking tiger? For those who don't know, Shazam comics used to be super weird and at one point a recurring character was a posh talking tiger in a suit named Tawny. What the tiger actually did, I have no idea. All I know is that he needs to be in live-action, trading jokes with Zachary Levi. Some versions of the character is just a regular tiger who gains the ability to speak later on thanks to Shazam's magic. Honestly, I'd be fine if Tawny was just a tiger at the zoo (which he was in the New 52 reboot), but if we can have a talking raccoon bring in millions of box office dollar, then why can't we have a tiger?

Will The Shazam Family Appear?

Shazam! takes a ton of inspiration from the New 52 reboot version of the character. Perhaps the most famous addition from the storyline was the introduction of the Shazam Family when Billy shared his mighty powers with his foster family. It was a powerful moment in the comics that saw Billy finally accept his new family, and it would make sense for the movie to do the exact same. While not officially confirmed by the studio, there are actors cast in the film who certainly look like they could play older versions of the child actors. Plus, there was some merchandise that indicated the Shazam Family would appear, but unless actually confirmed by footage, I'm not counting that!

There are still some important elements of Shazam! that are unknown to fans, but it's a good thing that the marketing isn't spoiling everything about the movie. It'd be a real bummer if it showed Superman or Black Adam appear in a trailer when it would have been better to just go into the theater cold. We also don't know for sure if the Shazam Family or a talking tiger will be making an appearance. Considering the importance of family to Shazam, I'd say that there is a pretty strong chance we'll see a bunch of super-powered kids running around by the time the credits roll. The jury is still out on that tiger, though.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Has Been Planned Since The Force Awakens

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Has Been Planned Since The Force Awakens
Rey in The Rise of Skywalker

The past few years have been great for Star Wars fans, as there's been a ton of new and exciting projects hitting theaters since Disney acquired Lucasfilm. The House of Mouse has produced standalone films and an upcoming live-action series, although fans are most invested in the main franchise. The nine-film narrative will end with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, with J.J. Abrams returning to the director's chair to tie up a variety of stories.

The pressure is on for J.J. Abrams to conclude the story he began with The Force Awakens, as well as the entire franchise up to this point. Adam Driver has starred as the villainous Kylo Ren in the sequel trilogy, and recently revealed that his character's story was planned from back in Episode VII, and has remained consistent through The Rise of Skywalker. As he put it:

An overall arc was very, not vague, the opposite, it was very clear—[there was] an end in sight even from the very beginning. The details obviously hadn’t been worked out, but we had talked about the very thing that we’d been working towards with this last one.

Well, this is a relief. Because while The Last Jedi shocked audience and The Rise of Skywalker was originally set to be directed by Colin Trevorrow, it looks like the overall story hasn't been changed much since The Force Awakens was in production.

Adam Driver's comments to Vanity Fair are sure to excite the hardcore Star Wars fandom, who might be nervous about what J.J. Abrams is bringing to the franchise with The Rise of Skywalker. Rian Johnson purposefully subverted fan expectations with The Last Jedi, and the blockbuster is the most divisive installment in the long running property. His bold choices didn't vibe with some of the hardcore fandom, although now it looks like the current trilogy's core narrative has remained consistent across all three movies.

The Star Wars franchise is beloved by entire generations of fans, so the pressure is on for J.J. Abrams to deliver with The Rise of Skywalker. But since he was the architect of the property's return to theaters, Abrams has a full understanding of the story, and will be able to wrap it up on a way that (hopefully) satisfies the rabid fanbase. Although the contents of Episode IX are still a total mystery at the moment.

There are a ton of balls in the air for the current Star Wars trilogy, so J.J. Abrams' narrative possibilities are seemingly endless. Audiences will follow the final battle for Ben Solo's soul, General Leia's final appearance, as well as the trio of new heroes. The first trailer for The Rise of Skywalker was truly epic, so the wait until Episode IX's will be excruciating for hardcore fans.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will arrive in theaters on December 20th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

The Russo Brothers Confirm Loki’s Fate In Avengers: Endgame

The Russo Brothers Confirm Loki’s Fate In Avengers: Endgame
Loki with the Tesseract

Massive spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame

It's been nearly three weeks since Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters, and there are still a ton of questions floating above the fandom. The Russo Brothers did the impossible with their massive blockbuster, meeting every expectation that fans had, and providing countless plot twists. One of which involved the God of Mischief himself, Loki.

Tom Hiddleston's Loki was killed by Thanos in the opening sequence in Avengers: Infinity War, seemingly ending the character's story forever. But Hiddleston is attached to a Loki series for Disney+, and the macguffin for that possibility was provided during Endgame's time heist. The sequence saw 2012 Loki escape with the Space Stone, an outcome that should have a massive impact on that universe. Now The Russo Brothers have confirmed this created a new timeline, with Joe Russo recently saying:

Loki, when he teleports away with the Time Stone, would create his own timeline. It gets very complicated, but it would be impossible for [Cap] to rectify the timeline unless he found Loki. The minute that Loki does something as dramatic as take the Space Stone, he creates a branched reality.

Cue the Loki Disney + series. Loki's fate was one of the unclear aspects of Endgame's conclusion, although now that the Russo Brothers have lifted the spoiler ban, they can be more chatty an expansive about the film's contents.

Avengers: Endgame's time heist was super ambitious, and brought the surviving heroes back to various points across the MCU's long history. The biggest group traveled to the Battle of New York from The Avengers, and split up to acquire three Infinity Stones. Everything was going according to plan, until Hulk smashed into an incognito Tony Stark, sending the Space Stone flying.

True to character, Loki seized this opportunity, and vanished. It's unclear where he might have traveled to, and Tim Hiddleston's character wasn't mentioned at any point during the film's third act. But now The Russo Brothers have confirmed that he's got a new timeline in the works. In the same conversation with Business Insider, Anthony Russo echoed his brother's statement, saying:

We’re dealing with this idea of multiverses and branched realities. So there are many realities.

The multiverse is a complicated concept to bring into the MCU, but the massive franchise has earned it at this point. And it's going to factor heavily into Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is the final installment in Phase Three. The newest trailer revealed that Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio was from another dimension, with the snap causing a tear in the multiverse. So it'll be fascinating to see how this type of storytelling moves the property forward, and if those tears become a recurring event in Phase Four.

It's currently unclear when Loki's Disney+ series will become available, as the future of the MCU is largely a mystery. But you can watch the God of Mischief's latest appearance on the big screen with Avengers: Endgame-- in theaters now. Be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Why Will Smith Won't Be Back For Suicide Squad 2

Why Will Smith Won't Be Back For Suicide Squad 2

Preparations for the follow up to Suicide Squad (now officially known as The Suicide Squad) are really starting to get underway, but now the film has lost one of its potential stars in the form of Will Smith, and we know why the franchise's Deadshot won't be back for the latest installment. It appears as though simple scheduling conflicts have led the studio and Smith to part ways.

While official casting hadn't yet been made public for The Suicide Squad (not to mention which characters from the first film would even be returning), according to Variety, Warner Bros. was, indeed, looking to bring back the biggest stars from the original, including Will Smith as Deadshot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. There's no word yet on whether or not Robbie will definitely return or in what capacity, but now it looks like we can no longer count on the chemistry between her nutty / dangerous ex-psychiatrist and Smith's sharp-shooter.

Apparently, the studio was working on securing the biggest actors from Suicide Squad so they would return for the sequel, while working out other casting decisions along the way as pre-production on the potential blockbuster progressed. It also sounds like Will Smith was eager to return, but when the schedule couldn't be worked out, he and Warner Bros. parted ways without any hard feelings on either side. The Suicide Squad is looking to hit an August 6, 2021 release date, so if Smith knew he couldn't fit the film into his schedule at this point in the process, it makes sense that both sides would step away so that allowances could be made for the amount of time necessary to rework the script so that his character wouldn't be needed.

Of course, there's a slight possibility that we could see a new Deadshot in The Suicide Squad. But, while a potentially meta moment where Harley Quinn or other returning characters comment on how much the years have changed Floyd Lawton could work wonders for the humor level of the burgeoning franchise, Will Smith was still holding out hope for a Deadshot solo film just a few months ago, so it's likely they won't be too hasty in taking the character from him.

The Suicide Squad has had a path to production that's been rather fraught with difficulty in the years since the original came out in 2016. The film made a fairly impressive $746.8 million worldwide against a production budget of $175 million, and even won an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, but (and this is a pretty big but...) the movie was not very well-received by critics or many of the hopeful fans who headed to theaters to see it. While Warner Bros. was deciding what to do with the financial success / critical mess it had on its hands, director David Ayer, who later said that he would have handled some aspects of the movie differently but didn't regret his work on the film, moved on to work on Gotham City Sirens, meaning he wasn't free to help develop the sequel.

The planned sequel then went through several reported options for a director and writers, settling for a time on Gavin O'Connor to helm the picture and David Bar Katz and Todd Stashwick to co-write it, but that all changed when James Gunn got fired from Disney in the summer of 2018 and was no longer set to steer the Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 ship. Warner Bros. scooped him up, and he's now writing and directing The Suicide Squad. This major change has given a lot of people hope that the new film will be structured better than the one that came before it, but it's also brought about some questions as to what direction fans can expect it to take.

About a month ago, when the official title and release date for The Suicide Squad was released, it was also revealed that instead of a straight sequel to the first movie, this is now set to be more of a "relaunch." And, with that news came rumors that James Gunn and Warner Bros. were looking to keep all the critical stink of the original away from the...relaunch and were eager to start over completely with no storylines continuing or characters returning for the new film. Of course, this potential news was shocking, because while most fans would agree that they can take or leave many aspects of Suicide Squad, most people were firm on Margot Robbie and Will Smith being the best parts of the film.

It was especially shocking for Harley Quinn, considering the fact that several new movies have been proposed as starring vehicles for the characters since her debut in Suicide Squad. Margot Robbie is currently filming Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), as mentioned earlier Gotham City Sirens is still being worked on and there was previously talk of a Harley and Joker movie that may or may not come to pass. So, with Warner Bros. clearly eager to keep Robbie's version of Harley on screens for as long as she's willing to do it, the decision to keep her out of The Suicide Squad altogether seemed odd. Luckily, those rumors were shot down not long after they began to take root, but, unfortunately, it now looks like when she does return she won't have Will Smith's Deadshot to pal around with.

Right now, we don't know what project could be getting in the way of Will Smith reprising his role as Deadshot in The Suicide Squad, but clearly it's important enough to him to stay away (at least temporarily) from a role he's said he enjoys playing and wants to take on again. Smith wrapped his role as Genie in the live action Aladdin last year, but is currently in pre-production on another sequel, and it's one that's been 16 years in the making: Bad Boys For Lif3, which is obviously the latest in the Bad Boys franchise. So, it's possible that this is the movie that he'll be filming instead of The Suicide Squad.

The Suicide Squad is still coming together, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend and we'll let you in on more details about the upcoming movie as they become available.
