Apparently, The Twilight Movies Are Hits On Hulu

Apparently, The Twilight Movies Are Hits On Hulu
Edward and Bella in Breaking Dawn Part 2

At the end of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, Bella and Edward promise each other that they will be together and love each other forever. Forever is a long time, and while I can’t speak to their current relationship status, the love fans have for the Twilight franchise burns as brightly as ever nearly seven years after the last film’s release. This is evident because apparently The Twilight Saga is a hit on Hulu.

Although we don’t often get a lot of clear insight into viewership numbers from streaming services, when you do hear something, it’s usually good. Such is the case with the Twilight films, which arrived on Hulu on January 1. Hulu revealed to Decider that approximately 5,000 of its subscribers binged all five movies in the saga on New Year’s Day. That shows that these hardcore fans were probably waiting for the films to drop and could think of no better way to spend the holiday than with the popular franchise.

Those 5,000 were just the Hulu subscribers and Twilight fans who had the most ambitious binging aspirations. Over 135,000 Hulu subscribers finished all five films within the first week of their availability on the now primarily Disney-owned service. There is clearly still a passionate Twilight fandom out there and likely some new Twi-hards as well considering how streaming services allow for people to discover things they might have missed.

Hulu also provided some insight into who was spending all this time with Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, and the most common age of Twilight streamers was 20 year old. That makes sense considering that those watchers would have been 9 when the first Twilight film released in 2008 and they essentially grew up with the franchise. Nostalgic properties are powerful value propositions for streaming services and Hulu has one in Twilight.

As you might expect, 63% of those who streamed The Twilight Saga on Hulu were females. The other 37% were dudes being forced to watch it (I kid). The combined heartthrob power of Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson persists. If only more Twilight fans would follow all the great work in smaller films Robert Pattinson has done since then. Maybe if he’s the next Batman, those who like seeing him as a brooding creature of the night will tune in.

Although The Twilight Saga anecdotally doesn’t seem to have maintained the pop culture relevance it once had, the series’ success on Hulu is a reminder that this franchise was no fluke. Over five films from 2008 to 2012, fans of the franchise and Stephenie Meyer’s books flocked to theaters to the tune of $1.36 billion domestic and $3.34 billion worldwide.

Twilight’s performance on Hulu shows that should the studio one day decide to pursue a reboot of the property or tell more stories in that world, they can point to these numbers and the continued fan enthusiasm as evidence that such an endeavor could be successful.

Pacific Rim Uprising And Tomb Raider Get The Honest Trailer Treatment Together

Pacific Rim Uprising And Tomb Raider Get The Honest Trailer Treatment Together

Normally the folks over at Honest Trailers only target one movie in each of their videos, but the latest Honest Trailer is an exception. This past spring saw the release of Tomb Raider and Pacific Rim Uprising, the former being a reboot of the Angelina Jolie-led Tomb Raider films (albeit being inspired by the same-named 2013 video game) and the latter being a sequel to the Guillermo del Toro-helmed first round of Jaeger vs. Kaiju action. Because the Honest Trailer folks found Tomb Raider and Pacific Rim Uprising to be "aggressively okay," they've decided to mash their critiques on both movies together rather than separately, which you can watch below.

This Honest Trailer doesn't waste any time tearing into Tomb Raider and Pacific Rim Uprising, declaring that the only reasons these movies were made is because Warner Bros acquired the Tomb Raider intellectual property from Paramount, and Comcast, which owns Universal Pictures, noticed that Pacific Rim over performed in China. But even though their premises are quite different, Tomb Raider and Pacific Rim Uprising to have some similarities, including the main protagonists (Lara Croft and Jake Pentecost) dealing with "daddy issues" and "Japanese MacGuffins," as well as the movies opening with fun sequences, but descending into "by-the-numbers action."

Critically speaking, Tomb Raider and Pacific Rim Uprising both earned mixed reception overall, and while Tomb Raider managed to perform decently at the box office, earning over $273 million worldwide off a $90 million budget, Pacific Rim Uprising's box office haul wasn't quite as admirable, only taking in $290 million worldwide, more than $100 million less than its predecessor. As this Honest Trailer posits, both movies might have benefitted from having a little more of what the other movie had in excess, i.e. Pacific Rim Uprising should have been grounded more in reality and Tomb Raider should have had more fantastical elements and "fun." It's not like either of these movies were theatrical disasters by any means, but rather than going down in film history as classics, Tomb Raider and Pacific Rim Uprising will primarily be found either as Redbox rentals or on the FX channel on a Sunday afternoon.

As things stand right now, it's unclear whether Tomb Raider or Pacific Rim Uprising will get sequels, though they both ended with teases for a follow-up adventure. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for updates on either franchise, and in the meantime, feel free to look through our 2018 release schedule to find out what movies are coming out later this year.

Mark Hamill Defends Unexpectedly Controversial Star Wars Reunion Photo

Mark Hamill Defends Unexpectedly Controversial Star Wars Reunion Photo

Star Wars' Mark Hamill has not been quiet about wishing the new trilogy ending the Skywalker Saga included a reunion for his Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford's Han Solo, and Carrie Fisher's Princess/General Leia Organa. So it wasn't exactly surprising or controversial when he tweeted a fan-made image doctoring a shot from the first Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer, adding Han, Leia, and Luke next to Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian. Hamill tagged that reunion photo with #MissedOpportunities:

However, the first comment under his tweet had this message:

You know this image comes from one of the alt-right portion of the fan base, right? Bad look sir.

Mark Hamill returned to Twitter to share a new version of the reunion photo, this time adding his Joker. He explained and defended his original post, but lightened the mood with some of his trademark dad humor in honor of Avengers: Endgame weekend:

Billy Dee Williams appreciated the Luke/Leia/Han/Lando reunion photo, and replied to Mark Hamill's tweet with his own light humor:

You should be used to getting everyone’s knickers in a twist……part of your charm man!

Most of Mark Hamill's replies have been supportive, with fans saying there was no need for him to have to defend himself. They understood he was just re-expressing his sadness at the "missed opportunities" of the final trilogy never having a full OG reunion. However, some commenters argued the source of what you retweet does matter -- especially if you are as influential as Mark Hamill -- since it may come across as support for the account that made it. Many other famous names, especially political figures, have been called out for such things in the past.

Mark Hamill wasn't trying to endorse anything other than more wishful thinking for What Could Have Been. He's been on that track for a while, even if the Disney suits would probably rather he drop it. What if this is all a long con and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker does give us some kind of Luke/Leia/Han reunion after all? Based on his many posts on the subject, it doesn't seem like that's the case, but you never know.

Mark Hamill even revealed he pitched an idea to director J.J. Abrams for Episode VII: The Force Awakens, bringing Luke Skywalker back into the story a little bit earlier in the film so he could reunite with Leia and they could all be there for Han Solo's goodbye. Now the character of Han is gone, and Carrie Fisher is gone in real life. Leia is still returning through previously unused footage, but the original trilogy reunion ship seems to have sailed.

At least we have Lando back in the mix for Episode IX, and the trailer showed him having a blast back in the pilot's seat. Of course, we can't forget Chewbacca -- even if this fan image didn't add him to the reunion. Chewie didn't get Leia's hug in The Force Awakens and he didn't get a place in this reunion photo. The Wookiee deserves better.

Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters December 20. Here's what we know so far about the end of the saga.

The Suicide Squad's Jai Courtney Is Psyched To Play Captain Boomerang Again

The Suicide Squad's Jai Courtney Is Psyched To Play Captain Boomerang Again
Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang

Although it is being described as more of a reboot than a sequel, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will be bringing back some familiar faces from David Ayer’s 2016 film. Among those faces is Jai Courtney, who played the funny and mad George “Digger” Harkness, better known as Captain Boomerang. Although his character was the most cowardly of the original group, Jai Courtney himself is psyched to hop back into the role for another go round, as he explained:

I loved playing Captain Boomerang. It's just like a rocker’s nightmare. Just looking forward to reprising that and getting the gold tooth back in and getting after it.

Captain Boomerang seems like the kind of character that would be a blast to play, and clearly Jai Courtney enjoyed his time as the Aussie bank robber. Based on what he told The Hollywood Reporter, he seems stoked that Captain Boomerang will be a part of the sequel and that he will get to have fun reprising that role, gold tooth and all.

We don’t know what writer/director James Gunn has planned, but Jai Courtney’s Boomerang does seem like the kind of odd and goofy character that Gunn does so well. And that makes him so ideally suited to this property in the first place. So it is cool that Captain Boomerang will be back and will be portrayed by an actor who relishes in the role.

Given the fact that most signs point towards James Gunn’s film doing its own thing and acting as more of a soft reboot than a true sequel, it’s difficult to know what The Suicide Squad has in store for Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang. At the end of Suicide Squad, having survived their mission, the team gets ten years off their sentences. Everyone except Boomerang. And while the others get special privileges, Courtney's gets put in solitary confinement.

Apparently Amanda Waller or whoever will put together the Suicide Squad in the sequel determines that Captain Boomerang isn't more trouble than he's worth and there is still some merit in keeping him around, if only for the comic relief.

Returning alongside Jai Courtney in Suicide Squad 2 is Viola Davis who plays Amanda Waller. The rest of the potential returnees are not confirmed as of yet. Despite some rumors to the contrary, it is believed that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will return, but Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag is not expected to.

Captain Boomerang will be mixing it up with some new faces as well. Idris Elba has been cast in The Suicide Squad and for a brief time, it seemed like he would be taking over Deadshot from Will Smith. Instead he will actually be playing a new character but we don’t know who yet, although we have some guesses. Also in talks to join Suicide Squad 2 and his first superhero film, is John Cena in an undisclosed role.

The Suicide Squad is scheduled to open on August 6, 2021. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to keep track of all the big movies coming to theaters this summer and for all the latest movie news, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark Trailer Is Going To Totally Invade Your Nightmares

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark Trailer Is Going To Totally Invade Your Nightmares

The horror boom is already proving to have some crazy strength in 2019, with titles like Us, Pet Sematary, and Happy Death Day 2U getting some nice buzz and heat - but these scary treats aren't going to be limited to the first half of the year. Instead, there is some haunting material set to come out in basically every quarter of this year, and now, thanks to the new teaser trailer for Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, we have a much clearer idea of what's going to be haunting our nightmares come August. Check it out!

We got a nice taste of what to expect from Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark when little online teaser and artwork were released promoting the title last month, but this is our first real look at the upcoming film. Produced by Guillermo del Toro, it's the latest movie from Trollhunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe director André Øvredal, and it looks like we're going to be getting a feast of horrific images on the big screen later this year.

There's been some question in regards to exactly how this movie would be able to string a narrative together, given that Alvin Schwartz's original books didn't really have any kind of consistent continuity or larger story to speak of. However, this trailer for Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark seems to suggest that the project has taken a Goosebumps-esque path, only instead of the works of R.L. Stine coming to life, it's the writings of a fictional author named Sarah Burrows.

Obviously that doesn't make the film seem all that original, but if it can make up for in scares what it lacks in narrative creativity, it may still work out for the best.

One can imagine that some of the material featured in this footage would give anyone nightmares, but it weirdly is extra special for those overly familiar with the source material - which I definitely am. It was scary enough reading stories like The Big Toe, The Red Spot, and "Aaaaaaaaaaah!" as a kid and simply imagining Stephen Gammell's brilliant artwork coming to life, but now actually seeing these terrible nightmares in realistic forms is next level freaky.

The cast of Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is mostly made up of young newcomers, including Zoe Margaret Colletti, Michael Garza, Austin Zajur, and Gabriel Rush, but there are some familiar veteran character actors as well, including Lorraine Toussaint and Breaking Bad's Dean Norris - who doesn't appear to be in a great emotional state when he briefly appears in this trailer. Clearly there is a lot of responsibility being put on a lot of young performers here, but one also has to wonder how it will affect the atmosphere of the finished film. In a weird way, seeing big time movie stars offers a bit of comfort for audiences, as there are certain expectations for their safety, but that's not really something in play here.

CBS Films is all set to release the film later this summer, letting it invade theaters on August 9th. Are you excited yet? Hit the comments section below with your thoughts, and stay tuned for more updates about Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark here on CinemaBlend.

Why Captain Marvel Crushed At The Box Office

Why Captain Marvel Crushed At The Box Office

It’s a familiar refrain, ‘X superhero movie made X amount of dollars in a huge opening weekend.’ We are over a decade, arguably almost two, into the comic book movie boom and it is common knowledge that superhero movies make a lot of money, those from the Marvel Cinematic Universe especially so. Yet the predictable nature of these successes does not make them any less impressive, and sometimes a movie surprises us, surpassing even the loftiest of expectations and thus warranting further examination.

It happened with Black Panther and Aquaman last year and now it is happening with Captain Marvel.

This is not to say that Captain Marvel will reach the heights of those aforementioned films, it’s far too early to tell, but it is off to an incredible start. Captain Marvel obliterated the most optimistic forecasts, rocketing to $153 million domestically in its opening weekend. Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) was an international hit as well. The movie earned $302 million overseas for a worldwide opening weekend of $455 million according to Deadline.

Those numbers are good enough for the 6th highest global debut of all time, the biggest March opening ever and the 2nd biggest worldwide opening for the MCU and superhero movies overall. So how did Captain Marvel go higher, further and faster than so many films before it to crush at the box office? Here are some ideas.

Avengers: Infinity War’s End-Credits Scene

Captain Marvel has not historically been an A-list character, and anecdotally, I don’t think she enjoyed the same cultural cachet or name recognition prior to her MCU debut of any of her forbearers save the Guardians of the Galaxy. So what did Marvel do? It gave her the ball in the red zone, a running start, a softball to knock out of the park via the end-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War.

Captain Marvel really couldn’t have been teed up better than it was thanks to that end-credits scene, which came on the heels of the most jaw-dropping, cliffhanger-y ending to the biggest superhero movie ever. Thanos had snapped his fingers and the Decimation scattered half our heroes to the winds, we were looking for answers and most importantly, hope.

That hope came when Nick Fury, in his dying act, when the hour was most late, called out for help using a strange pager that showed a symbol unfamiliar to many. That symbol was Captain Marvel’s and whether the majority of audiences knew that or not at the time, they probably found out and only became more curious to see the debut of the hero that could be the key to defeating Thanos.

That made Captain Marvel necessary viewing for Avengers: Endgame (although maybe audiences should have paid more attention to Ant-Man and the Wasp). It’s kind of remarkable that the Captain Marvel trailers and marketing didn’t lean into this by beginning with Nick Fury’s page, but it is clear that it didn’t matter.

Captain Marvel Is A New Hero

The MCU has grown by leaps and bounds since it began in 2008 but it still largely revolves around the same core group of characters. And while we love Black Widow, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and the rest, it is always exciting when a new hero gets introduced. It’s like unlocking a new character in a fighting game, we’re eager to see who they are and what they can do.

The introduction of new characters acts like a soft reset for the universe, like a new coat of paint or a software update, opening up new storytelling possibilities and different permutations for how they will interact with existing pieces. When that character is a new female hero leading her own movie, displaying powers we haven’t seen before, it feels fresh and different and that’s exciting for audiences.

Moreover, there is a reason that superhero movies go back to the well of origin stories so often, and that’s because they work and audiences love them. The last time we got a big new hero being introduced with their own solo movie in the MCU was last year’s Black Panther and before that in 2017 with Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Both of those characters were introduced first in Captain America: Civil War and their successes and the opening weekend of Captain Marvel shows that audiences are ready to meet new characters and see this universe expand. And that’s a good sign with many established characters likely leaving the universe as we head into Phase 4 and new ones take up their mantles.

The Release Date

As is the case with most MCU movies, Captain Marvel entered the weekend unopposed by any other major studio releases, so competition was null. More than that though, Captain Marvel came into the marketplace at a time when audiences were thirsting for a new blockbuster. The first two months of the year have not exactly been full of movies that have forced audiences to brave the winter cold.

Despite wonderful family friendly animated fare like The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World hitting theaters, they don’t really motivate mass audiences to go to the theater the way a live-action, PG-13 tentpole does. The only real movie that could qualify as a blockbuster in the same vein as the MCU flick is Alita: Battle Angel, which sadly didn’t have the power of the Marvel brand behind and was somewhat ignored by domestic audiences, despite being, I would argue, a better movie.

So audiences were ready and waiting for something like Captain Marvel to hit theaters and specifically they were waiting for an MCU film. In a lesson Star Wars could learn from, Captain Marvel arrived 3 months since the last big superhero film Aquaman; 8 months since the last MCU film Ant-Man and the Wasp and nearly a year since Avengers: Infinity War.

That build up since our last visit to the MCU meant that the public was eager to return and Captain Marvel arrived just in time to get us ready for Avengers: Endgame. Arriving on International Women’s Day was also a nice touch.

The Marvel Brand

Success breeds success and there is no more successful brand at the multiplex right now than Marvel Studios. Marvel movies crush at the box office both domestically and overseas and thanks to Captain Marvel’s performance, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will soon cross $18 billion at the box office over 21 films.

This level of unprecedented success isn’t just a result of the quality or entertainment value of the individual films themselves, it is the achievement of the Marvel brand. The MCU is more than the sum of its parts and audiences turn up on opening weekend because it is a Marvel movie. The Marvel name is a trusted one among general audiences, a guarantee of quality and entertainment regardless of what hero gets top billing.

That’s why nothing is really a gamble for Marvel anymore. The days when it was feared that Guardians of the Galaxy might be too obscure and weird to succeed are long gone. Marvel can take perceived risks with its films, like its first female-led superhero film with a lesser-known character because it’s not really a risk with the Marvel name attached.

That Marvel name also lets audiences know that this is the next chapter in the cinematic television series that is the MCU. Skipping out on Captain Marvel would be like missing an episode in a serialized television show. You have to see it because you want to be part of the conversation and see how this impacts things moving forward.

Captain Marvel Offered Something Different

The last reason I think Captain Marvel is crushing at the box office is because of all the things that it brings to the table that seem to set it apart from what’s come before. Captain Marvel herself is a new hero and this is Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie and that’s exciting but this film also offered us smaller things that may have appealed and enticed audiences to come to the theater.

For one the Skrulls and their shape-shifting ability offered a new type of villain in these movies and something that looked like it could be a lot of fun, as the battle with granny Skrull on the train in the trailers showed. There is also the fact that this is Marvel’s first film set in this time period. Many of the people who went to see this film may have lived through or grown up in the 1990s and have some affinity and nostalgic sentiment towards that decade.

Lastly, this film featured some strong supporting players. Audiences have been following Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury since 2008 and we all wanted to see him be in a buddy cop movie with Carol Danvers and find out how he lost his eye. Plus Goose, I mean come on; featuring the cat in the marketing was a smart play.

These elements may be superficial and ultimately Captain Marvel feels like fairly standard superhero origin story stuff, but it doesn’t matter because it looked different and interesting enough for people to show up and help it crush at the box office.

Whatever the reason for its success, Captain Marvel's debut has gotten the MCU's year off to a great start ahead of the all-important Avengers: Endgame next month and it is a positive sign that Carol Danvers can be one of the faces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the years to come.

Captain Marvel is now playing. Check out what we thought of the film and what ticket you should buy when you see it. For everything else you can look forward to this year, take a look at our 2019 Release Schedule.

The Insane Number Of Costume Changes Taron Egerton Has In Rocketman

The Insane Number Of Costume Changes Taron Egerton Has In Rocketman
Taron Egerton as Elton John

Elton John changes costumes more than most people change their bed sheets. The charismatic, stage-dominating pianist has established himself as a fashion role model over the course of his hall-of-fame career, entertaining audiences with his visual presentation as much as he did with his musical prowess.

For that reason, it goes without saying that Rocketman costume designer Julian Day (Rush, Bohemian Rhapsody) had his work cut out for himself when trying to dress Taron Egerton as Elton John. Needless to say, Day didn’t disappoint. While I’d need a second viewing to confirm, I was fairly confident that Sir Elton never wore the same outfit more than once in the movie, and had a different costume in every major scene.

At the Rocketman junket in London, we asked Egerton how many costume changes he thinks he has in the film, and he guessed:

It’s north of 50, I think. Yeah, it’s a lot. … There’s little things that might crop up repeatedly, but not a great deal. I think I retained my Troubadour boots for the scene afterwards at Mama Cass’s [house]. I think I just -- Julian and I figured, they’re fabulous boots!

They’re so fabulous, he even uses them to PLAY the piano when entertaining audiences at the famed Troubadour club in Los Angeles:

So, Taron Egerton guessed “north of 50,” and you’d assume he would know, seeing as how he had to wear all of those outfits to play Sir Elton John in this fantasy musical biopic. The movie begins with John heading to rehab, wearing the bold orange jumpsuit and devil horns. Where do you go from there?

But we also put the question to Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher, who also estimated:

I don’t know the answer to that. I reckon it’s got to be upwards of 40. I would imagine. I wonder. I’ll have to ask Julian. Julian Day, the costume designer, will absolutely know that number. … [Taron] came in every day and he had to wear something different. Look, he was in 60 days, minimum. So I would say 50 was probably a good guess.

You know what matters? That there are five slots in the Costume Design category at the Academy Awards, and one of them better go to Julian Day. Here’s Taron Egerton and Dexter Fletcher waxing poetic on the beautiful costumes in their new movie:

Rocketman is in theaters as we speak.

All The Major Awards Bohemian Rhapsody Won

All The Major Awards Bohemian Rhapsody Won
Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody

Last year, Bohemian Rhapsody dethroned 2015’s Straight Outta Compton to become the highest grossing music biopic of all time with its $902 million worldwide box office haul. It’s no surprise a musical epic about the formation, struggles and success of Queen was a blockbuster, the British rock band is one of the most recognized acts across the globe.

The movie also found triumph stacking up a ton of distinguished accolades during award season despite average reviews from critics about the film’s “paint-by-numbers” approach to the band’s bold legacy. Overall, Bohemian Rhapsody was nominated for 57 awards in over 30 ceremonies during the star-studded movie season and was decorated with 21 total wins.

Now that the gold glitter has settled from Oscar season, let’s break down some of the movie’s biggest award wins. Pro tip: Play Queen’s “We Are The Champions” as you read on:

Bohemian Rhapsody At The 2019 Golden Globes

While Bohemian Rhapsody was in award conversation from the beginning, bets weren’t high on the biopic taking the cake for award season’s highest merits until it took home some key trophies at the Golden Globes during the Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh hosted movie and television show recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press. The movie was nominated for two awards and won them both. Take a look:

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama, Rami Malek

Best Motion Picture - Drama

Rami Malek offered up a transformative performance of a lifetime as rock icon Freddie Mercury, not just donning fake teeth to resemble the frontman, but replicating his mannerisms and his on-stage energy (almost shot-for-shot in the film’s final Live Aid scene). He won over Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born), Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate), Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased) and John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman).

Bohemian Rhapsody was nominated for the most distinguished award of the night “Best Picture” alongside Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, Spike Lee’s BlackKklansman, Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk and Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born in the drama category over the comedy/musical category, which Green Book won for.

It was certainly a surprise win, especially since the movie has the lowest Rotten Tomato score of 61% among its fellow nominees in the 89% - 97% range. The win showed the movie was being taken seriously by voters going forward gave the movie a huge boost for the remainder of Oscar season.

Bohemian Rhapsody At the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards

A few weeks later, the movie about rock’s “Killer Queen” took the 25th SAG Awards with similar accolades then what had just won at the Golden Globes on the board for the film: recognition for Malek and the award show’s own version of “Best Picture” – “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture”. Here’s what Bohemian Rhapsody won that night:

Outstanding Performance by an Male Actor in a Leading Role - Rami Malek

He did it again. The Mr. Robot actor even won over Christian Bale’s Dick Cheney performance, who won in the comedy Best Actor category at the Golden Globes this time around, really proving he could sweep this whole thing. The film’s other nomination went to the cast of Black Panther who made history as the first Marvel film to receive such accolade and the highest-grossing film to ever win the SAG award.

Bohemian Rhapsody At the 2019 BAFTA Awards

The Queen movie then braved the British Academy of Film and Television Arts award show at Royal Albert Hall in London with a whopping seven nominations in the running including Best Costume Design, Best Make Up/Hair, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Leading Actor and Outstanding British Film of the Year. Check out which one’s the movie won below:

Best Leading Actor - Rami Malek

Best Sound - John Casali, Tim Cavagin, Nina Hartstone, Paul Massey and John Warhurst

Once again, no other male actor could beat out Rami’s Freddie Mercury portrayal. This time the movie was also recognized for “Best Sound” for all the work that was put into creating a realistic portrayal of various Queen performances, using a mixture of Freddie’s voice, Rami’s and even an expert Queen-sounding YouTube star. This award gave Bohemian Rhapsody a leg up in one technical category going into the Oscars, though Netflix’s Roma and The Favourite primarily won over the movie in other categories.

The 2019 Academy Awards Bohemian Rhapsody Won

Then came Hollywood’s biggest night and the official cap on award season: The Oscars. Bohemian Rhapsody’s award reign opened up the hostless show with a energetic kickoff performance by Queen and new frontman Adam Lambert. The movie had five awards on the line that night. After Bohemian Rhapsody had previously not been considered as an Oscar’s favorite it's gained traction from ceremonies gave the movie a overall triumphant conclusion.

Best Performance By An Actor in Leading Role - Rami Malek

Best Achievement in Film Editing - John Ottman

Best Achievement in Sound Editing - John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone

Best Achievement in Sound Mixing - Paul Massey, Tim Cavagin, John Casali

Bohemian Rhapsody won everyone of their nominations except for Best Picture, which was now infamously given to Green Book. The film swept a lot of the Academy’s technical awards, with more nods to its use of sound and most controversially for its Film Editing, which has been since criticized for its whiplash cuts in one particular restaurant scene.

Rami Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury is clearly the MVP of Bohemian Rhapsody, which early critics of the film still undeniably praised, even if they were bothered by other elements of the movie. Take a look at the actor’s last hurrah “Another One Bites The Dust” first Oscar win from the big night below:

What a success story Bohemian Rhapsody was! The film itself went through its own roadblocks before hitting all these milestones such as Bryan Singer’s firing as director late in the project’s filming and it received early criticism for not exploring all the facets of the band. Now looking back, Bohemian Rhapsody is a grand celebration of the late rock icon Freddie Mercury, his Queen band mates and the lasting impact of their music and story.

Mouse Guard Isn't The Only Fox Film Disney Is Scrapping

Mouse Guard Isn't The Only Fox Film Disney Is Scrapping
Mouse Guard

As much fun as it is to get excited about how the X-Men and Fantastic Four will eventually be incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox, we can’t ignore that this merger has also resulted in some negative consequences. Last week, it was announced that Disney is dropping Mouse Guard, a Fox blockbuster project that was only weeks away from beginning production. Now we’ve learned about more Fox movies that are being evicted from the House of Mouse.

The Tom Hanks-led News of the World and the adaptation of the Angie Thomas book On the Come Up have both been removed from the Disney slate. However, unlike Mouse Guard, both have already found homes elsewhere, with News of the World (as revealed earlier this month) moving to Universal and On the Come Up moving to Paramount. The Woody Harrelson-led dramedey Fruit Loops is also reportedly poised to be given the heave-ho, although Disney hasn’t made that official yet.

These three movies came from the now-shuttered Fox 2000 division, and according to insiders who spoke with THR, this is Disney “simply culling the enormous influx of projects.” Regarding why On the Come Up was specifically cut, the last movie based on an Angie Thomas book, The Hate U Give, lost money despite being modestly budgeted, so presumably Disney wasn’t willing to take another risk like that. It was also noted that Mouse Guard was deemed to be too expensive for a non-franchise film.

So these mark the latest casualties of the Disney/Fox merger, but it’s also important to mention that there other projects that were given the green light by Fox president Emma Watts before the merger was finalized that will still move forward under the new regime. They include Kingsman: The Great Game, Fear Street, West Side Story, Free Guy, Death on the Nile and, of course, Avatar 2.

That said, apparently some of these movies are being met with “scrutiny,” with Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn reportedly being concerned about the West Side Story remake showing young characters smoking. In terms of overall scope, the report states that Emma Watts and the Fox folks are not being asked to make lower-priced movies, but to aim for more “larger all-audience PG-13 and R films,” like The Ballad of Richard Jewell, which Clint Eastwood is being eyed to direct.

It was to be expected that there would be changes to the Fox release slate after Disney took control, but that doesn’t make it any easier when the people who are working on these movies learn that their work has been ejected. The best case scenario is that these projects move to other studios, the worst is that they never see the light of day. Either way, don’t be surprised if more Fox removals are revealed in the coming weeks/months.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates about the changing Fox landscape now that it’s part of Disney. For now, you can learn what movies are already on the calendar in our 2019 release schedule.

Stephen King's Reaction To Seeing It: Chapter 2

Stephen King's Reaction To Seeing It: Chapter 2
The Losers Club from IT

The work of Stephen King is as popular now for cinematic adaptation as it has ever been. However, without question, the best of the recent films based on his work was IT. Now the movie that will complete the story, It Chapter 2 is set to arrive later this year. However, King himself has apparently already seen the film, and he's getting fans hyped by telling them it's terrific. King recently tweeted...

Looking forward to IT Chapter 2? You should be. I've seen it, and it's terrific. The trailer is coming Thursday, at noon. You'll float.

This will almost certainly get fans excited, for the trailer if nothing else.King says the trailer is set to drop at noon. As he's based in Maine we can assume that's noon eastern time.

The fact is that we fully expect Stephen King to only have good things to say about It: Chapter 2. If something went completely haywire and he hated the movie he would likely stay quiet.

Of course, at the same time, King also had pretty complementary things to say about The Dark Tower before it came out, and that it didn't turn out nearly as well. He also went absolutely crazy over how good he thought the recent remake of Pet Sematary was and a lot of people wouldn't agree with him on that one either.

Of course, it seems highly unlikely that the same thing will happen here. The same team behind the camera that brought us the first chapter of IT is also making the new installment. That movie was a smash hit that brought in $700 million globally and became the highest grossing R-rated horror movie ever made.

From what some of us at CinemaBlend have already seen, it looks like the sequel is exactly what fans of the original are looking for.

The first part of IT followed half of Stephen King's novel, which followed a group of young kids as they dealt with a supernatural evil that took the form of a clown. The sequel will follow the same group after they've entered adulthood, though we know the younger versions of the characters will also appear in the new film.

While the novel jumps back in forth between time periods, the movie took the approach of splitting the story in two and telling the tale chronologically. It made the first movie a complete story that didn;t even necessarily need the follow up if the first movie wasn't a hit, but of course, it was.

James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, and Bill Hader are among those joining the film as the grown up versions of the Loser's Club.

While we can't necessarily take Stephen King at his word, we'll be able to judge for ourselves if It: Chapter 2 looks great when the new trailer hits in a couple of days. The movie hits theaters in September.

Disney's Live Action Mulan Has Cast Two More Animated Movie Characters

Disney's Live Action Mulan Has Cast Two More Animated Movie Characters

Disney has been digging deep into its library of classic animated movies in recent years to adapt them for live action, and while some, like Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, have followed the original stories relatively closely, others, like Maleficent, have taken notable creative liberties. In the case of the upcoming Mulan, while the basic premise of its 1998 animated predecessor is being kept intact, its lineup of characters is almost completely brand new. Until today, the only characters from the animated Mulan who were announced for the live action version were Mulan herself and the Emperor of China, but now it's being reported that Ling and Po will both be appearing as well.

According to Deadline, Jimmy Wong and Doug Moua have been cast to play Ling and Po, respectively, in the live action Mulan movie. Wong is best known for his role in the digital series Video Game High School and for his voice role in the Sony animated movie Wish Dragon, while Moua has appeared in Gran Torino, Blue Bloods and Iron Fist. So while audiences will be meeting the majority of the live action Mulan's cast for the first time, at least there are a few more familiar faces to accompany the eponymous protagonist.

In the animated Mulan movie, Ling and Chien Po, along with their diminutive comrade Yao, were among the fellow recruits at the training camp Mulan traveled to, and like everyone else, they had no idea she was actually a woman. Although this trio didn't get off to the best start with the heroine, eventually they befriended her, and even after after her secret was revealed, they helped her save the Emperor of China when Shan Yu and his men attacked the palace. There's no word in this report on whether or not Yao will appear in the live action Mulan movie, but if these versions of Ling and Po are anything like their cartoon counterparts, they'll be a source of comedic relief. That being said, given how stacked this movie's cast is, I can't help but wonder if Ling and Po won't be as important to the story as they were in the animated Mulan.

While specific plot details details for the live action reimagining of Mulan are being kept under wraps, like its predecessor, it will follow a young woman who takes her father's place in the Chinese army disguised as a man. Along with Jimmy Wong, Doug Moua, Liu Yifei as Mulan and Jet Li as the Emperor of China, the cast includes Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, the leader of an Imperial Army regiment and Mulan's mentor; Yoson An as Chen Honghui, a fellow recruit in Commander Tung's unit who becomes Mulan's most important ally and eventual love interest; Gong Li as the main antagonist, a powerful witch; Jason Lee Scott as Bori Khan, a warrior leader who allies himself with the witch; Xana Tang as Mulan's sister; and Utkarsh Ambudkar and Chum Ehelepola as Skath and Ramtish, a con artist duo.

Directed by Niki Caro, Mulan will be released in theaters on March 27, 2020, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage on its progress. In the meantime, feel free to look through our 2018 release schedule so you can keep apprised of what movies arrive later this year.

Zack Snyder Has Blunt Words For Any Fans Mad That Batman Killed Someone

Zack Snyder Has Blunt Words For Any Fans Mad That Batman Killed Someone
Ben Affleck as Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Whatever your view of Zack Snyder's DC superhero movies, there's little argument that his particular take on Batman and Superman would qualify as "non-traditional." One specific way that Snyder broke with previous versions of the character was when he made a version of Batman who had no problem with actually killing people, a line that the character traditionally would not cross in modern films and comics.

However, at a recent Q&A following a screening of Snyder's earlier comic book movie, Watchmen, the director made it clear that he has little sympathy for people who took issue with his version of the classic DC characters, as seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, as he feels they made sense for a modern comic book movie. According to Snyder...

Someone says to me 'Oh Batman killed a guy.' I'm like 'Really?' I'm like 'Wake the fuck up.' ... I guess that's what I'm saying about, once you've like lost your virginity to this fucking movie and then you come say to me something about like 'Oh my superhero wouldn't do that.' I'm like 'Are you serious' I'm down the fucking road on that. And it's a cool point of view. Look, I'm 100% fine, it's a cool point of view to be like 'My heroes are still innocent. My heroes didn't lie to America. My heroes didn't embezzle money from their corp, my heroes didn't commit any atrocities.' That's cool, but you're living in a fucking dream world, OK?

Snyder's comments at least make it clear where he was coming from in creating his version of the DC Universe. His earlier film Watchman, and the comic it was based on, argued that if superheroes were real, they would not be the paragon of virtue we're used to seeing in comic books. Snyder believes this idea so strongly that he carried it over to characters like Batman and Superman. He thinks viewing any sort of hero with that sort of idolization is akin to living in a dream world. Everybody has flaws and that should be understood.

While many might agree, the response on Reddit, where Snyder's comments were posted, is largely negative. Many feel that while a story like Watchmen has its place, Batman is something quite different and should be treated as such. Batman's decision not to kill his enemies is a key aspect of the character, and if you change it, he's simply not Batman anymore.

Of course, there's really no right answer to questions like these. There will always be fans of the traditional view of any character with a history as long as the one Batman has. Changes and new interpretations will always happen, but exactly what aspects of the character are immutable won't always be agreed upon. A Batman willing to kill certainly opens up interesting ideas to be explored that wouldn't be there with a more traditional iteration of the character.

What do you think about Zack Snyder's perspective on Batman? Let us know in the poll below.

Nicolas Cage Wants To Star In A Blumhouse Movie, And Jason Blum Is All For It

Nicolas Cage Wants To Star In A Blumhouse Movie, And Jason Blum Is All For It

Ever since the trailer debuted a few months back, Mandy has been one of the most intriguing post-summer movies. The action horror film stars Nicolas Cage, giving a trademark crazy performance in a phantasmagorical revenge story. Nicolas Cage is earning positive notices for his performance in the low-budget flick, leading to thoughts that there is more he could do in the low-budget horror space-- perhaps with a company like Blumhouse. Well, Nicolas Cage agrees. He likes what Blumhouse is doing and he'd be up for starring in a Blumhouse movie, as he said:

[Jason Blum's] certainly touched a nerve, and he's having great success. I work with anyone who is enthusiastic and has an understanding of what they'd like to do with whatever my instrument can offer them. I certainly would not hesitate. I think what he's doing is a great concept and the results back that up.

Nicolas Cage sounds like he is very much open to starring in a movie for Jason Blum, whatever it may be. He seems to be very aware of the success Blumhouse is having with low-budget horror, and his confidence in that success and Jason Blum's enthusiasm and vision is why he wouldn't hesitate to star in a Blumhouse production. His comments to Forbes also give you a good idea of how Nicolas Cage views his profession as an actor. He sees himself as an instrument for the filmmaker to use as he or she sees fit and if Jason Blum can use Nicolas Cage in something, he is more than willing to oblige.

Wanting to star in a Blumhouse movie and Blumhouse actually wanting you to are two different things, so Nicolas Cage's desire to work with Blumhouse does not guarantee it'll happen. Fortunately, this fandom goes both ways, and Blumhouse Productions head Jason Blum is excited at the idea of working with Nicolas Cage. And he will seemingly look for an opportunity to do so, as he explained:

And I had no idea that Nicolas Cage wants to work with Blumhouse, I'm a huge fan of his, and I love that he's a huge fan of ours. Seriously, I'd love to have him in a Blumhouse movie; he'd be great. I see him as perhaps a very concerned father of a teenage boy who has had something terrible happen to them. It would be amazing. I'm going to have to figure that out.

While speaking to Forbes, you can tell how psyched Jason Blum is to know that Nicolas Cage is a fan of what he and his company. Blum seems to already be brainstorming story ideas, and what kind of role he could use the Oscar winner for. Jason Blum mentioned something of a more dramatic role for Nicolas Cage, but he is a versatile actor willing to do whatever is asked. So whether it be something serious or something that calls for a crazy Nicolas Cage performance, the actor should have the experience.

Now all that needs to happen is for these two to set a lunch and get the ball rolling on some story ideas. There are no guarantees, but I'd guess Nicolas Cage will show up in a Blumhouse movie sooner or later. Blumhouse has plenty in the works at the moment. This fall sees the release of the Halloween reboot, and Jason Blum also would love to reboot the Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer franchises.

You can currently see Nicolas Cage in Mandy, now playing in limited release. Check out all of this year's biggest films still to come in our release guide.
