Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile Writer Explains Why The Netflix Movie Has No Actual Murder
Lily Collins and Zac Efron in Ted Bundy Netflix film Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile

Netflix’s Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile is centered on an infamous Ted Bundy who confessed to 30 murders across the United States before being sent to the electric chair for his crimes. If you’ve seen the film starring Zac Efron though, you know it doesn’t classify as the gory slasher one might expect from a movie tracing the serial killer’s life.

This was intentional and there’s a good reason why. Here’s how the film’s writer Michael Werwie explained that creative choice:

I was compelled by all of the mundane domestic details of his life and I thought an interesting way into a serial killer's story would be to show no serial killing at all. I wanted to explore the love story of it all. This is more of a human side of the story. It’s about the people who had an emotional connection to Ted Bundy. This is about seduction, betrayal and it’s also about the truth. The emotional side of the story is what makes the movie different than the documentary.

While many movies of this subject matter have focused on the shocking crimes themselves, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile is a study of the killer’s life outside his infamous murders. The film tells the story from the way his longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth “Liz” Kloepfer, learned of his dark psyche. They met at a bar in 1969, fell in love and lived out a happy life with her daughter for many years before news of his crimes surfaced. Some have accused the film of glamorizing the killer but it’s telling the story through the eyes of someone who loved him.

Lily Collins, who plays Liz in the film and director Joe Berlinger visited Kloepfer prior to shooting the film. Berlinger said looking through the photo albums of skiing trips, camping and birthday parties that reminded him of his own memorabilia cemented the film’s direction to be from the perspective of Bundy’s home life with Liz.

The director had recently explored all the gruesome details of Bundy’s crimes in his documentary Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes and wanted to go in another direction for the feature film. In his words to THR:

Conversations is much more of a clinical dissection of the terrible things he did. This movie is an emotional unwrapping of the level to which he was able to deceive, not just Elizabeth Kloepfer, but the American media that kind of made him into a perverse folk hero and the American judicious system.

The film also shows how the courts where Ted Bundy was being tried was lenient with him because of his clean-cut look and charisma. Bundy was allowed to represent himself as a defense attorney. He escaped from prison twice because of how careless the security was about him. Berlinger noted that if he’d been a person of color he wouldn’t have been able to get away with so much with the justice system that he did.

If the perspective was shifted to one full of violence and slaughters, the audience wouldn’t get the view of Ted Bundy everyone around him had. It’s not until the end when Liz accepts his crimes and confronts him in prison to confess to him do we see a moment of Bundy being capable of brutality on screen.

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile is available to stream on Netflix now, along with these new titles coming to the platform this month.

Oscar Isaac Has A Great Response To Those Batman Rumors

Oscar Isaac Has A Great Response To Those Batman Rumors
Oscar Isaac's Last Jedi poster

It's a very exciting time in Oscar Isaac's career. The 40 year-old actor became a household name from his role in the Star Wars franchise, playing smart-mouthed Resistance pilot Poe Dameron. Since then, he's booked a ton of work, appearing in a multitude of movies every year. And with Episode IX ending the current trilogy and Skywalker Saga forever, it should be fascinating to see which projects Isaac signs on for, now that his schedule has opened up a bit.

Fanboy culture obviously has a soft spot for Oscar Isaac, given his role in Star Wars and the ill-fated X-Men: Apocalypse. As such, he's been put on fan lists to possible replace Ben Affleck as the DCEU's Batman. He's not the only name being floated around to play the lead in Matt Reeves' The Batman, and now Isaac has officially responded to the rumors, saying:

No. I have only read it online like everyone else. I haven’t had any conversations about Batman, unfortunately, but I am sure it is going to be great. Matt Reeves is such a great director. Yeah, he can get my number.

While shutting down any possible rumors or reports of talks with Warner Bros., Oscar Isaac did make one thing clear: he'd love to work with Matt Reeves. So perhaps the director could end up giving Isaac the call to play the new Dark Knight after all.

Oscar Isaac's comments come from his interview with Metro, while the actor was on a press tour for his Netflix movie Triple Frontier. Interestingly enough, he's starring in the heist film alongside Ben Affleck himself. So if he ever gets approached to play Batman, he'd be taking on the mantle from a recent friend and colleague. Of course, he clarified that that process hasn't even begun, and there is no truth to rumors about Isaac's involvement in The Batman.

He may have shut down the rumors of his role, but Oscar Isaac's final comment in the statement above is going to get DC fans very excited. He doesn't seem to have ruled out the possibility of playing Batman, expressing his interest in working with Matt Reeves. So the excitement and rumors will likely keep swirling until Reeves finally revealed who is taking the title role in The Batman, now that Ben Affleck is officially out.

Realistically, Oscar Isaac seems like a less likely choice to play Batman, given what we've learned about Matt Reeves' still developing DC project. The Batman will reportedly focus on a younger version of Bruce Wayne, who is more green in his vigilante work. Oscar Isaac is only 6 years younger then 46 year-old Ben Affleck, so that might take him out of the running. Although most Star Wars fans would kill for a chance to see him behind the cowl. After saying goodbye to Poe this coming December, audiences will want another excuse to see him on the big screen.

Even if Oscar Isaac ends up taking the role of Batman, he's going to have some massive shoes to fill. The DC live-action universe had a solid Bruce Wayne with Ben Affleck's iteration, which brought something new to the character, unique from the myriad other adaptations. Skipping an origin story, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice debuted a Batman who was experienced, jaded, and surprisingly violent. He was arguably the best part of an uneven blockbuster, and comic book fans quickly got on board with Batfleck.

Ben Affleck eventually reprised his role in a quick few scenes in Suicide Squad, before taking on a larger role in Justice League. Unfortunately for the filmmaker, those two projects failed to resonate with critics and audiences alike. And after going viral for his Sad Affleck face regarding Dawn of Justice's reviews, Affleck eventually hung up his cowl and cape for good.

Now Matt Reeves has the lofty task of finding an actor to replace Ben Affleck in the DCEU. It's hard to enough to cast the Dark Knight in live-action, but it's especially challenging given the character's tenure in the shared universe. There are bound to be endless comparison to Batfleck, and the new Bruce Wayne will have to try doubly hard to bring something new to the beloved DC hero.

If the reports are to be believed, Matt Reeves will do this by focusing on a younger version of Gotham's Protector. This should be in stark juxtaposition to the last iteration, and there are plenty of moviegoers who would love to see Oscar Isaac step into the suit. Additionally, The Batman will also reportedly focusing on the detective side of the title character's life as a vigilante. This has been sorely missing in the previous iterations, especially considering Bats is known as the World's Greatest Detective.

As for Oscar Isaac's involvement, we probably shouldn't hold our breathe in hopes of him taking on the role of Batman. While he seems like a great candidate due to his star-power and status among the fandom, Matt Reeves' plans for The Batman don't necessarily fit Isaac's talents. But there were rumors that the director was looking for a big name to take on the role. And the Poe Dameron actor is that type of name.

It's also important to note that The Batman has already gone through a ton of changes during its long gestation period. Ben Affleck was originally attached to direct and star in the project, before dropping out of each of those roles on separate occasions. Matt Reeves eventually took over, but it seems like the script and story are still being worked on. So if they manage to bring Oscar Isaac into the fold, the younger Bruce Wayne idea could get the chop. We'll just have to wait and see.

You can catch Oscar Isaac in Triple Frontier streaming not on Netflix, and he will play Poe Dameron one last time in Episode IX on December 20th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Disneyland Reveals How To Book Your Reservation For Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

Disneyland Reveals How To Book Your Reservation For Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge
Millennium falcon at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

Update: Just before noon pacific time, less than two hours after reservations were made available., Disneyland announced via Twitter that they were gone. Now the only way to guarantee yourself access to Galaxy's Edge in the first three weeks is to make a reservation at a Disneyland Resort hotel.

Original Story: After years of waiting, we're now less than a one month away from one of the most anticipated entertainment events in the world. It's not a movie release. It's not the end of Game of Thrones. It's the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. For anybody who has ever dreamed of traveling to the galaxy far, far away, that day is almost here.

However, to get into Galaxy's Edge during the first three weeks it's open, you'll need a special reservation specifically for the new land. Those reservations can begin to be made at 10:00 AM pacific time on May 2. Here's what you need to do:

To Make A Reservation

The first thing you'll need is an account on the Disneyland website, so if you don't have one of those, go get signed up now. It's completely free and if you're going to Disneyland anyway, there's no reason not to have one, it makes a lot of things very easy.

Next you need to go to the Disneyland Reservation Page for Galaxy's Edge. The link can be found here. Starting at 10:00 AM this page will act as the virtual waiting room for making a reservation and will walk you through booking one once it's your turn. A single reservation is good for up to six total people.

Of course, there is also a second option for booking a reservation. If you book a stay at a Disneyland Resort hotel during the period of May 31-June 23, you'll automatically be given a reservation for Galaxy's Edge during one day of your stay. No other steps are necessary. Simply be sure that everybody who will be going to Galaxy's Edge is listed as a guest on the hotel reservation.

However, be aware that if the hotel reservation is canceled, the Galaxy's Edge reservation will be as well.

Once You Have A Reservation

Making a Galaxy's Edge reservation is free, but, of course, visiting Disneyland is not. That means that on the day of your reservation every member of your party over the age of three will require a valid theme park admission.

In addition, every member of the party 18-years-old or older, as well as the person making the reservation, regardless of their age, we'll require photo ID in order to enter the land.

The other thing to be aware of is that no modification of the reservation time can be made once it's done. There's also no remedy for replacing a reservation if it goes unused, so before you book it, make sure the date and time works for you. You also won't be able to modify the names on the reservation.

Disneyland has not confirmed exactly how long you'll be able to spend in Galaxy's Edge with your reservation but guests who have received reservation times already by booking hotel rooms are reporting being given a four hour window. Depending on exactly how many people are being let into the land, that should be enough time to get a ride on Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run, and maybe even grab a drink at Oga's Cantina.

After June 23, reservations for the land will no longer be required. The word is that Disneyland is working on a digital notification system, not entirely unlike getting a buzzer in a restaurant, where you'll be able to request a visit to the new land, and the Disneyland app will notify when there is space for you to enter.

Disneyland has never done anything quite like this before but then again in the parks 64 year history, nothing quite like this has happened. Galaxy's Edge is the largest single land expansion in the history of the park and its using one of the most popular IPs in the history of pop culture.

A nearly identical version of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is set to open at Walt Disney World August 29 at Disney's Hollywood Studios. No reservation period has been announced for that opening, which makes me think the true purpose of the Disneyland reservation requirement is to act as a soft opening for the new land.

I can't help but wonder if fewer people will be let into Galaxy's Edge during this reservation period than the land can technically hold. It would be a great way to put the space, the attractions, and the cast members, through their paces and learn to deal with any unforeseen problems that might appear with smaller crowds.

If true, this would make the first three weeks of Galaxy's Edge actually the best time to visit as it might be less crowded, not more crowded, than the space will be once the reservation period ends.

Since Galaxy's Edge at Walt Disney World is essentially identical, any problems found at Disneyland can be fixed before they ahppen, and thus the reservation period wouldn't be necessary.

The other thing that the reservation period adds is piece of mind. If all you want is to be one of the first to visit Batuu, knowing that you'll be able to, that you won't have to stand in an insane line, because there will be no stand by line, is probably a very nice feeling.

Of course, that still leaves the question of how easy getting reservations will be. The land will certainly accommodate hundreds if not thousands of people, and that many people, in four hour blocks, when the park will be open for 16 hours a day, over three weeks of time, will certainly allow for a lot of people to book reservations. Though exactly how many people will be trying is impossible to know.

Before the reservation system was announced, estimates were that as many as 200,000 people might show up on opening day, but even that number of people should be able to get a reservation without issue. You might not be able to get the exact day and time you want, but it seems likely getting a reservation at all shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Of course, if demand is truly excessive, we could see all three weeks of time fill up quite quickly.

John Wick: Chapter 3 Director Reveals Keanu Reeves Wants His Character To Suffer

John Wick: Chapter 3 Director Reveals Keanu Reeves Wants His Character To Suffer

There's no question that John Wick is one of the most talented killers in all of cinema, but the first John Wick movie established that he left that life behind. Alas, to channel Michael Corleone, just when John thought he was out, they pulled him back in, and as a result, his life has gotten increasingly worse. This summer, John Wick: Chapter 3 will reunite us with Keanu Reeves' character and his struggles, but director Chad Stahelski, both he and Reeves like seeing John suffer since it mirrors the classic hero's journey. Stahelski explained:

I'm a big fan of Joseph Campbell's mythologies of the hero and what he would have defined as the theater of pain, or sometimes we call it 'The Die Hard Conundrum': We just to like to beat the (stuffing) out of our heroes. If you choose that kind of lifestyle, you're going to be pretty beat up. So we like John Wick to suffer and think Keanu loves for John Wick to suffer, too.

If Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski's goal is to ensure that John Wick is as miserable as possible, then mission accomplished. Still, their reasoning does make sense. It wouldn't be that interesting to watch a hero's journey unfold if the hero is having an easy and relaxing time overcoming adversity and challenges. And considering that John's world is especially violent even by R-rated movie standards, it'd be implausible for him to come out of these adventures unscathed.

In that regard, John Wick is in good company with Bruce Willis' John McClane, who's been put through the ringer across five Die Hard movies (possibly soon to be six). But physical pain is just the tip of John's iceberg of suffering. He's also been put through a lot of mental anguish, and that's definitely not subsiding anytime soon. Chad Stahelski and writer Derek Kolstad, are the ones responsible for John's existence, and if one or both of them are remain involved with the franchise, then it's a good bet that John won't be catching any breaks in the future.

Chad Stahelski also informed USA Today that John Wick: Chapter 3 will reveal more of the eponymous protagonist's origins, which involve Angelica Huston's character, who's so far known only as The Director. John Wick is also leading his own comic book series from Dynamite Entertainment, in case you're looking for extra insight into how John became the man who can easily kill people with pencils. It can be surmised that most, if not all of John's life has been difficult, as no well-adjusted person becomes a killer of his caliber. But it's quite easy to track John's journey of misery onscreen.

Within the John Wick movies, the start of his current round of suffering began was when his wife, Helen, died of a terminal illness. That was just a cruel twist of fate, though nonetheless heartbreaking, marking an end to the four wonderful years he had with Helen after he performed the 'Impossible Task' (so many bodies were buried that day) so she and him could live together in peace. Things started to turn around when a puppy Helen ordered before she died arrived on John's doorstep, and with a new companion in his life, John felt he could find happiness again.

But then Iosef Tarasov and his goons had to break into John Wick's house to steal his car, killing the dog in the process. Now consumed by vengeance, John literally unearthed his old life and killed off anyone trying to prevent him from reaching Iosef. By the end of the first John Wick movie, both Iosef and his father, Viggo Tarasov, were dead, Viggo's criminal empire was dismantled and John even brought home a new dog. Sadly though, John lost his mentor, Marcus, during the craziness.

At the start of John Wick: Chapter 2, John successfully took his car back, though it'll be many years before it's in pristine condition again. Regardless, that was supposed to be the end of John's killing days, but because he jumped back into that world briefly, that was enough incentive for Santino D'Antonio to visit John and demand him to kill his sister as repayment for Santino helping John with the 'Impossible Task.' John refused at first, so Santino destroyed his home, and after some prodding from Continental manager Winston, John successfully carried out the assassination.

Unfortunately for John Wick, then Santino D'Antonio called in a $7 million contract on John's head to tie up the remaining loose end. In the end, John shot Santino in the head, but because this occurred on Continental grounds, he was declared excommunicado and punished by being banned from the hotel chain and losing access to all underworld resources and privileges. As if that wasn't bad enough, the contract on John's head was doubled to $14 million, meaning he's now on the run with just a dog by his side and a Marker in his pocket.

John Wick: Chapter 3 will see John trying to fight his way out of New York, resulting in him leaving behind his highest body count yet. Along with the previously-mentioned Director, we'll meet other members of The High Table, like Asia Kate Dillon's Adjudicator and Robin Lord Taylor's Administrator. Other new players being introduced in John Wick: Chapter 3 include Halle Berry's Sofia, Mark Dacascos' Zero and Jason Mantzoukas' Tick Tock Man, while the returning characters will include Ian McShane's Winston, Lance Reddick's Charon and Laurence Fishburne's Bowery King.

It remains to be seen if John Wick: Chapter 4 will get the green light, though if Chad Stahelski has his way, the franchise will continue indefinitely. That said, a spinoff TV series called The Continental is being developed at Starz, and Keanu Reeves is expected to reprise John at some point during the show. So even on the off-chance John Wick: Chapter 3 marked the end of the assassin's theatrical exploits, we'll still be seeing more of him, and no doubt he'll still be suffering in some form or fashion.

John Wick: Chapter 3 will be released in theaters on May 17, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more coverage on the threequel. In the meantime, you can plan your moviegoing schedule over the next 12 months accordingly by checking out our 2019 release schedule.

10 Great Movies Coming To Netflix In June 2019

10 Great Movies Coming To Netflix In June 2019
Dr. Seuss' The Grinch watching a monitor with his headset on

Every month brings its own share of treasure with the periodic updating of the Netflix streaming roster. But taking a look at what’s headed our way in June, it’s hard to think of a month that beats some of the stuff that’s headed our way. In particular, there’s 10 titles coming into view that have us looking to update our queues on a basis frequent enough to be considered addictive.

If you’re curious about the total incoming lineup for June, head on over to our complete rundown. Otherwise, it’s time to head into the future, and see the Netflix streaming titles we’re ready to watch at the push of a button.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Right out of the gate, June was going to be a winner the moment that Netflix announced Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was going to become a part of their line-up. A film that has a legitimate claim to the title of “Best Spider-Man Film Ever,” the adventures of Miles Morales and a slew of other Spider-People blew everyone’s minds upon its release towards the end of last year. Now, after all of the awards and all of the hoopla has died down, it’s time to start it up again with an even wider audience to reach this time around.

A.I.: Artificial Intelligence

For years, Steven Spielberg refused to direct A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, a project that started with Stanley Kubrick’s vision of a robotic retelling of Pinocchio. With Kubrick conspiring with Spielberg to flesh out his vision for the story of Haley Joel Osment’s David, an automaton who could truly love, the idea would eventually become a reality once the legendary mind behind A Clockwork Orange passed away. The end result is a vision worth of Stanley Kubrick’s faith in Steven Spielberg being able to do the project, and remains one of his most underrated films in his canon.

Network

Some movies call the shot years, or even decades, before the events they predict come to be in reality. Network is one of those films, as writer Paddy Chayefsky’s biting satire of sensationalism in the news media seems more like a tragedy than a dark edged comedy in our trying times. With the Broadway adaptation starring Bryan Cranston being nominated for several Tony awards, and set to close its blockbuster run in the beginning of June, it feels like the right time to bring the film version of Howard Beale’s antics, with Peter Finch in the role he made famous, back to the world of streaming services.

Good Night, And Good Luck

While we’re on the subject of journalism, director George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck will also be available on Netflix’s streaming library in June. Based on the true story of television news anchor Edward R. Murrow, and his team’s investigation into the McCarthy hearings of the 1950s, David Strathairn stars as Murrow in an all-star cast that includes Clooney, Jeff Daniels, Patricia Clarkson and Robert Downey Jr. A biopic that remains compelling all the way through, Good Night, and Good Luck is a firm reminded of how important the practice of journalism is, no matter what the era.

Small Soldiers

Joe Dante is one of those directors who has a stable of films so unique, they could only have been made by him. And in the fine tradition of Gremlins and The ‘Burbs, Small Soldiers is another one of those gems that stand out in his line of proudly weird films. With two factions of warring toys tearing apart a sleepy, suburban town, the film was one of Dreamworks’ earliest motion pictures in theaters, debuting shortly after its launch. But even with the late ‘90s era it incorporates into key moments of the film, Small Soldiers is still a ‘50s inspired sci-fi romp, much like most of the director’s other films.

The Dark Knight

It’s starting to feel like Netflix likes to add and subtract The Dark Knight from their lineup as often as people change their car’s air fresheners. And who can blame them? The second entry in the Christopher Nolan-directed Dark Knight Trilogy pits Christian Bale’s Batman against the late Heath Ledger’s Joker, with the soul of Gotham City at stake in their battle of wits. It’s been over a decade since it first debuted, and yet The Dark Knight still holds up to the test of time. Whether you watch it as a standalone experience or pair it with the also-returning Batman Begins, a perfectly good flashback is waiting for you in your own personal box office.

50/50

With Long Shot currently in theaters, moviegoers are enjoying director Jonathan Levine’s deft hand at portraying laughter and emotion in equal turn. And whether you’re already a fan of his work doing such feats, or have just become accustomed to them in your own time, 50/50 is another good reminder of how good he is at what he does. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Long Shot co-star Seth Rogen, the film is modeled the true story of Will Reiser, who, much like his fictional surrogate played by Gordon-Levitt, was struck with cancer in his mid-20s. At times hysterical and at times devastating, the film is an entertaining ride that will require tissues, but rewards you with deeply felt jokes at the same time.

Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch

Illumination has tried its hand at adapting the works of the late, great Dr. Seuss in the past, with The Lorax being a previous claim to fame for the animation powerhouse. With last year’s Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, the studio was able to not only outdo its high water mark in the world of Seussian magic, it also put a pretty fresh spin on an old classic. With Benedict Cumberbatch’s Grinch, we not only get to see more of what turned him into such a sourpuss, but we also see more of an effective transformation than we’ve ever seen before. As cute as it is funny, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch can still be enjoyed outside of the festive holiday time frame, as long as you keep an open mind.

Carrie

If Tabitha King had never fished the manuscript for Carrie out of the trash, we’d never have gotten the best-selling novel from Stephen King’s hand. Nor would we have ever gotten the classic film adaptation that director Brian DePalma would eventually terrorize teenagers with in the ‘70s. Featuring young Sissy Spacek as the shy girl who would eventually become a psychokinetic terror, the slow burn of her transformation is something that horror fans still admire to this day. Also, if you’ve ever wanted to hear John Travolta shout, “Git ‘er done,” you’ve got that added bonus coming your way if you choose to watch Carrie.

Cabaret

Maybe it’s because FX’s Fosse/Verdon has been diving into the creation of director Bob Fosse’s most iconic works, alongside a dissection of his darkest demons in life. Maybe it’s even the sort of darkening clouds that our culture feels have been upon them for some time. Whatever the reason, having Netflix bring the film version of Cabaret to its streaming lineup sounds like a fantastic idea for this moment. A film that delivered Fosse his resurrection as a filmmaker, it’s a dark and glitzy musical that shows the rise of Nazism in early Germany, with an increasingly dismal tone. If you’re looking for a purely good time, steer clear of this story; but if you’re not afraid to go places most musicals won’t, Cabaret will greet you with a warm wilkommen.

While there’s plenty of fresh air and sunshine headed our way in the next month, consider these upcoming Netflix addtions as the best ways to spend those rainy days that keep you cooped up inside. Or they could even be fantastic distractions for a day when it’s perfectly fine outside, but you’re in that special mood of movie watching.

Keep in mind, these titles are subject to change, so you may need to double check the availability of these films periodically. Also, if you want to see what the best and brightest titles from May’s incoming lineup happened to be, head over to last month’s rundown and fill out your queue! We’ll see you here next month, when we look at the top tier titles from July’s fresh batch of films.

Avengers: Endgame’s Jeremy Renner Shares Set Photo From That Black Widow Scene

Avengers: Endgame’s Jeremy Renner Shares Set Photo From That Black Widow Scene

It’s been a little over a month since Avengers: Endgame hit theaters. Fans are finally on the road to recovery, even though all those major character deaths still may sting. Then Jeremy Renner has to post sentimental pictures such as this one and get us all emotional once more.

Check out the Hawkeye actor’s latest reminder of Endgame’s MCU culmination below:

I’m not crying, you’re crying! The Instagram picture has Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner sweetly holding hands on set during their big scene together that ends tragically for Black Widow. Renner refers to ScarJo as the “goddess” that she is with this behind-the-scenes image of their scene on Vormir.

In Avengers: Endgame, the dynamic duo team up once again to retrieve the Soul Stone, with the cost unknown to them. Once Red Skull explains that one of them will have to sacrifice their life in order to complete their mission, the two compete to keep the other alive. Black Widow ends up with the short stick when she falls off the cliff and shares the same fate as Gamora did in Infinity War.

Jeremy Renner previously addressed the scene on social media, admitting it was a difficult day to film but one of the best. The pair actually shot another version of the scene on Vormir that would have had Hawkeye and Black Widow fighting off Thanos’ soldiers together before Scarlett Johansson goes for the cliff. Instead of Endgame including a final battle alongside each other, it was cut down, likely due to the movie’s pacing.

The scene certainly is one fans have debated since Johansson’s Black Widow is finally getting a standalone movie in Phase Four. Perhaps it’s a prequel? Some think that when Captain America goes back to Vormir at the end of Endgame to return the Soul Stone, Black Widow may also be resurrected.

The Endgame writers called the trade an “everlasting exchange,” so Black Widow’s technical future could be bleak. The Black Widow movie has already cast a few stars for the flick including Stranger Things’ David Harbour and Fighting For My Family’s Florence Pugh, and is rumored to begin filming in June, so the film will likely be one of Phase Four’s early entries.

Additionally, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye will be explored on an original series for the new streaming service Disney+. It is reportedly set after Endgame and will follow Clint Barton training Kate Bishop to be the new Hawkeye.

Even though the characters will still live on in these upcoming projects, their time on Vormir in the scene pictured above could potentially be the last time Black Widow and Hawkeye share the screen. At least they’ll always have Budapest!

Why Winston Duke Thinks You Need To See Us More Than Once

Why Winston Duke Thinks You Need To See Us More Than Once
Lupita Nyong'o in Us

Jordan Peele’s debut film, Get Out, earned him an Oscar and instantly announced him as a bold and exciting new filmmaker with a clever voice. His eagerly anticipated follow up, Us, arrives in theaters this week, and I can tell you (as someone who was lucky enough to catch it at the South By Southwest film festival) that you are going to want to go out of your way to see it. In fact, make plans to see it twice.

There’s a twist in Us. That’s all I’ll reveal. But the twist changes the movie, and a second viewing will open up several new avenues of discussion. I’m not alone in thinking that repeat viewings are essential. One of the movie’s stars, Winston Duke, spoke with AMC Theatres and told them, regarding repeat viewing of Us:

It’s one of the things where you can’t get the full scope of what’s happening from the first viewing. Once you get to the end of the movie, it’s interesting to go back to the beginning and see how those things tie in and see the little nuanced body language and behaviors that foreshadowed some of those things. There’s a lot of beautiful literary elements that play in this film. A lot of allegory. A lot of foreshadowing. Metaphors. I know on my second viewing, a lot of things came alive that definitely I didn’t even understand while I was making it.

Winston Duke is not blowing smoke, but it’s really hard to elaborate on what he is saying without giving away the true joys of Us. So, we will dance around it.

Think of it this way. You likely saw Get Out. Do you remember how many clues and references Jordan Peele included in that socio-political thriller that weren’t clear until after you knew, fully, where the movie was going? Us is like that. You will enjoy it the first time through. It’s terrifying, and highly engrossing. But once you fully understand Us, you literally will want to do a 180-degree turn and buy a ticket for the next showing, because you will NEED to see it again.

Here’s the trailer for Us, to prepare you for this movie’s unique brand of insanity.

Want to go in cold? I can’t say that I blame you. Here’s all that you need to know about Us. It follows a family, led by Winston Duke and Lupita Nyong’o, as they embark on a restful weekend by the sea. But they are in for horrors when they are confronted by home invaders who look exactly like themselves. Who are these people, and what might this mean?

Find out for yourself when Us opens in theaters on Friday, March 22.

Black Widow’s Big Avengers: Endgame Scene Originally Went Down Differently

Black Widow’s Big Avengers: Endgame Scene Originally Went Down Differently
Widow and Hawkeye in Endgame

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame may have already been in theaters for weeks, but the public hasn't recovered from from the film's wild events. The Russo Brothers masterfully brought the blockbuster to theaters, in a story that balanced character-driven story with epic action. But Endgame went through quite a few changes before finally arriving theaters, including Black Widow's story.

Black Widow has been the soul of The Avengers since early in the group's formation, sharing an intimate bond with all of the OG members. So her sacrifice to procure the Soul Stone was fitting and emotional, as was the tension between she and Hawkeye as they tried to stop each other. But it turns out that the Soul Stone sequence in Endgame could have contained even more action, with Thanos and his forces arriving to stop the Avengers. Endgame editor Matthew Schmidt recently revealed this, saying:

On script and what we first shot was an excellent scene. Thanos and his soldiers show up on Vormir and a small battle ensues between them and Natasha and Clint. Natasha decides to run off the cliff. Clint tries to stop her while also fending off the attack.

Well, that's a different type of heartbreaking. Because while Natasha was always meant to sacrifice herself for the Soul Stone, the journey toward her death changed throughout the course of Endgame's development. In the theatrical cut, Hawkeye and Black Widow were left to ponder Red Skull's comments, and decide who should end up jumping in order to complete the Time Heist. But it originally included the duo being attacked by Thanos' forces, adding in an extra level of drama and action to the scene.

It may have been thrilling to see Black Widow and Hawkeye team-up in battle one more time in the scene described to Business Insider, but I think that the correct version of Endgame's Soul Stone scene was ultimately in the theatrical cut. Cutting out the threat of Thanos and his outriders allowed the scene to breathe, and for Clint and Natasha to have one last tender moment with each other. What's more, the two Avengers scuffling in order to try and sacrifice themselves was unique type of action for the blockbuster.

Black Widow's death was the first big one in Avengers: Endgame, and showed what a massive arc the character had gone through within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She refers to the Avengers as her family to War Machine, and helped to regulate superheroic efforts in the wake of Thanos' snap. She was also the most determined to fight back and reverse the snap-- whatever it takes.

It should be interesting to see what comes next for Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow. While Hulk wasn't able to bring her back with his snap, the character will finally get her own solo movie in Phase Four. Smart money says it'll come in the form of a prequel, finally revealing Natasha's sordid past. ScarJo's contract with Marvel is also up with Endgame, so the actress should get a serious pay bump for another appearance.

New Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again Trailer Keeps Hinting At Donna's Death

New Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again Trailer Keeps Hinting At Donna's Death

There are few genres quite as universally successful as big movie musicals. While not all musicals get the critical acclaim of La La Land or Chicago, there's something classic and nostalgic about watching actors sing and dance on the silver screen. Case in point: Mamma Mia!, which made a ton of money when it hit theaters back in 2008. Based off the hit Broadway musical of the same name, Meryl Streep lead the ensemble cast in the fun and sugary romp featuring the beloved catalogue of ABBA. A sequel, lovingly titled Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, is set to arrive this summer, although the first trailers were noticeably missing Streep's character, Donna. Now the final trailer has hit, and it really looks like Here We Go Again may kill off its protagonist.

Things aren't looking so good for Donna, as she's once again largely missing out from the upcoming sequel's trailer. While we've got a few new shots of Meryl Streep decked out as a member of The Dynamos, the other characters mostly seem to be referring to her in the past tense.

This new trailer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again offers tons of fun moments, as well as some new songs that weren't included in the original movie. As we've seen from previous footage, the new movie will exist in two different timelines. While the present will follow Sophie's pregnancy and journey to motherhood, we'll also be privy to the events from Donna's diary. A young version of Meryl's character (Lily James) and her friends will interact with Donna's three suitors, get pregnant with Sophie, and you know the rest.

It looks like Sophie has taken on the island from her mother, and the hotel and accommodations are looking better than when we saw them in Mamma Mia! Sophie's fiancee (still?) reveals she wanted to make her mother proud, which certainly sounds like an ominous line to include in the trailer. It's unclear what party Sophie is throwing on the island, but maybe she's finally getting married to Sky. After all, Donna kind of hijacked the wedding last time. Overall, the possibility of Donna being killed off certainly seem wild, especially since Merl Streep was announced to be returning shortly after Here We Go Again was greenlit.

Aside from the fate of Donna, much of the excitement over Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again revolves around ABBA's catalogue. The legendary pop band has as ton of great hits, most of which were included in the first movie, and it's preceding musical. The sequel's first trailer revealed that songs like "Mamma Mia" were going to once again appear in the sequel, indicating that reprises and new versiosn of the same songs will likely be used throughout. But there are also some new songs featured, which will make hardcore ABBA fans everywhere happy.

Early in the trailer we hear the classic jam "Waterloo". While this song was played during the credits scene, it wasn't a bonafide scene in the first film. But Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will change that, and I think we can actually hear Pierce Brosnan's signature gravelly singing along in the new trailer. Cher also makes another appearance as Sophie's grandmother, and it looks like she'll be singing "Fernando" and hopefully more classics during the sequel.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will arrive in theaters on July 20th. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
