Who Will Be The MVP Of Avengers: Endgame?

Who Will Be The MVP Of Avengers: Endgame?

After over a decade of buildup and a year of waiting, we are in the endgame now. Avengers: Endgame finally hits theaters this weekend, and as Cap says in the trailers, this is the fight of their lives. Therefore it is worth speculating about who will be the most valuable player in that fight and offer the greatest contribution in the victory over Thanos we presume will happen before the credits roll.

With fumbles and dropped passes aplenty, there wasn’t really any hero deserving of an MVP award in Avengers Infinity War. You could maybe say Doctor Strange or Thor, but it would be a small consolation, like the Dallas Cowboy’s Chuck Howley who won the MVP award in the 1971 Super Bowl loss to the Baltimore Colts. The Avengers were positively destroyed last time, but they have another chance in the rematch and someone is going to need to step up.

Who that someone will be is the question. There are a lot of contenders, some more obvious than others, and there’s a not-insignificant chance that Endgame’s MVP will be given their award posthumously. So let’s take a look at the team members who seem to be the most likely MVP candidates of the endgame, and for the purposes of this exercise, I’ll only be including heroes who weren’t dusted at the end of Infinity War.

Tony Stark

It’s personal between Tony and Thanos, and between his brains and firepower on the field, Iron Man seems like he has a great shot at being MVP of Avengers: Endgame. Iron Man came close to making the ultimate sacrifice to save Earth in The Avengers, and there’s a possibility that this time it might actually stick. Steve Rogers called Tony Earth’s best defender and it seems entirely possible that Iron Man could sacrifice himself performing some incredibly heroic act that wins the day at the eleventh hour. That would make him a strong candidate for a posthumous MVP award.

Black Widow

Lots of people seem to be getting a good chuckle out of Black Widow training for the fight with Thanos by doing target practice, but that’s ignoring how much of an impact she has made in the MCU without superpowers. Consider how Natasha Romanoff was able to close the portal in The Avengers, thus stopping the flow of Chitauri into New York. Being the MVP isn’t just about who has the highest kill count, it’s about who came through with the right play at the right time. Black Widow’s mission in Endgame might be less flashy, but that doesn’t make it any less vital.

Bruce Banner

With Shuri dusted, Bruce Banner’s mind is one of the most powerful tools the Avengers have at their disposal. That may prove important, but Bruce Banner’s greatest potential to earn MVP depends on his ability to get his green friend to come out for a rematch with the Mad Titan. We haven’t seen the Hulk yet in the trailers, but if he does return to form, which seems likely, he will be a huge asset in the physical battle against Thanos and his forces. It doesn’t seem like he will be the one to end Thanos, but he could play a crucial defensive role, creating a lane for someone else to finish him off.

Ant-Man

If you ask subscribers of the “Thanus Theory,” there is only one way Thanos will be defeated, and it’s a dirty job that only Ant-Man can perform. Yet even forgoing anal ingress and corporeal detonation, Ant-Man may still prove to be the most valuable and important Avenger in Endgame. Ant-Man’s knowledge of the Quantum Realm could be the key to bringing everyone back, and that alone might make him the most valuable. In the first trailer for Endgame, Scott Lang’s existence was made out to be a big deal and even though he’s a rookie on the Avengers team, gushing about playing with Cap, this may prove to be his big moment.

Captain America

In our own poll about who will die in Avengers: Endgame, Captain America was overwhelmingly marked for death. MCU fans have been convinced that Steve Rogers is going to die for some time now, and with Endgame set to complete his arc, that eventuality seems nigh. Cap sacrificing himself to save others in an incomparable feat of bravery would be completely on brand for the character and makes him perhaps the strongest contender for MVP. He’s also the team leader; he may not be able to take on Thanos in the way Thor or Captain Marvel could, but if the Avengers are victorious, there’s a good chance that his planning and play calling will be the reason why.

Hawkeye

Avengers: Endgame seems poised to act as a swan song for the original 6 Avengers, so it stands to reason that one of that lot will have a John Elway-esque ride off into the sunset with a game-winning performance. I don’t know if Hawkeye is the most likely candidate for that, but you can’t underestimate the importance of one well-placed arrow. Hawkeye also seems like he has lost a lot, and in order to get it back, he may do something recklessly heroic. We also must note that Hawkeye was on the bench the last time the Avengers fought Thanos, so maybe he’s their good luck charm.

Thor

With a clutch appearance and countless Outriders destroyed at his hands in the Battle of Wakanda, Thor made a strong case for the MVP of Avengers: Infinity War. Alas, his Hail Mary axe to the chest proved misplaced and they lost. Thor will want to make up for that mistake in Avengers: Endgame and avenge his brother, his fellow Asgardians and all those snapped out of existence when he wasn’t strong enough. And unlike most of the Avengers, he has a weapon that could theoretically kill Thanos. If Thor does in fact deliver the killing blow, that would make a solid case for him being MVP.

Nebula

No other character has hated and wanted to kill Thanos for as long as Nebula, and if she finally succeeds, she would be the unquestioned MVP of Avengers: Endgame. Nebula played a pivotal role in The Infinity Gauntlet comics storyline and Marvel could borrow from that here. Her primal war cry in the trailers is chilling and there’s no doubt that Nebula will do ‘whatever it takes’ to defeat Thanos and avenge Gamora. And yet, her hatred could make her too emotional and a prime candidate for a Peter Quill-level mistake. But she’s definitely a dark horse MVP contender to watch for.

Captain Marvel

In one of the clips from Avengers: Endgame, Bruce Banner asks how they know this second fight against Thanos will end any differently, to which Carol Danvers responds “Because before you didn’t have me.” It’s a confident response, and given her ridiculous power level, she may very well be right. For a while it seemed like Captain Marvel was being positioned as the cavalry coming in to wreck shop when the need was most dire. It now seems she’ll be in the film from early on, but regardless, she could prove the difference maker in this fight and a great performance here would set her up nicely to lead the MCU in Phase 4 and beyond.

These are just the contenders that seem like they could make the biggest impact going in to Avengers: Endgame but someone else could surprise us. Rocket Raccoon, War Machine, Valkyrie, Pepper Potts, Happy Hogan, who knows? Ultimately, I think the safe money here is on Tony or Cap, but everyone is bringing something to the table and depending how the movie plays out and how you judge what’s ‘most valuable,’ any of these characters could be the difference maker that undoes The Decimation and leads to Thanos’ defeat.

Steer clear of spoilers and ready your bladders because Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for all the latest coverage on the MCU epic and let us know in the poll below who you think will be the film’s MVP.

Why Shooting Avengers: Infinity Wars Opening Scene Was Difficult, According To Kevin Feige

Why Shooting Avengers: Infinity Wars Opening Scene Was Difficult, According To Kevin Feige

Massive spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War. If you haven't seen it, look away!

While Avengers: Infinity War has been out for a few weeks now, the fandom and moviegoing community as a whole is still recovering from the absolutely wild and emotional ride. The Russo Brothers crafted a dense but rewarding blockbuster, and had no problem with killing off characters at the drop of a hat (or snap of a finger). The stakes of Infinity War were made clear with its opening sequence, which saw Thanos murder Heimdall and Loki after happening upon the Asgardian ship in space. MCU head honcho Kevin Feige recently opened up about the challenges of that specific scene, saying:

Everybody loves being in the shared sandbox, but there's emotion when people have been playing these characters for this long and are this closely. They are as emotionally connected to the characters, if not more so, than the audiences are. So you have to imagine it's emotional as they go through scenes that either represent, as I said, some sort of a curtain dropping, or just scenes that allow them to reflect on how far they've come, so there are a lot of days like that, that were emotional. And for Tom in particular, yeah, there was some. Some days were more emotional than others.

While the excitement to finally jump into Avengers: Infinity War was palpable on set, there was also a sense of dread. Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba played Thanos And Heimdall since 2011's Thor was released, and they no doubt have a special relationship with their signature Marvel characters.

Kevin Feige's comments to The Wrap reveal how emotionally powerful Avengers: Infinity War's opening scene truly was. With two major Marvel characters possibly saying goodbye to their characters forever, there was an added level of urgency that definitely translated onscreen.

Loki's death was a truly horrifying and shocking moment of Avengers: Infinity War, especially given the character's long tenure in the shared universe. Tom Hiddleston's character has been universally regarded as the MCU's best villain, so seeing the Mad Titan choke the life out of him was a game changer that proved that neither Thanos nor the Russos were pulling their punches this time around. The Avengers' big villain ended up being swatted away early in Infinity War, revealing how much has changed in the MCU since Earth's Mightiest Heroes first united in Phase 1.

Tom Hiddleston's contact with the MCU is likely up after Avengers 4, explaining his character's death logistically. But with renewed interest in the Thor franchise after Taika Waititi's Ragnarok, maybe some new deals can be made to keep the likes of Thor and Loki in the shared universe. We'll just have to wait and see if the latter and Heimdall remain dead or return in some way in the future.

Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

John Wick 3's Big Spoiler Scene Caused A Bunch Of Challenges

John Wick 3's Big Spoiler Scene Caused A Bunch Of Challenges
Keanu Reeves as John Wick holding a handgun

The following contains spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.

The newest installment of the John Wick franchise once again puts the title character through hell. He's set upon by another army of assassins trying to kill him and he must fight them off almost entirely alone, and while Wick has proven resilient, he hasn't made it this far without some scars. However, the biggest injury John Wick has yet sustained comes in John Wick Chapter 3 - Parabellum, and it's an injury that caused problems not just for the character, but also the production of the movie itself.

Without diving too deep into spoiler territory, John Wick sustains a serious injury to his left hand, one that required the use of CGI in order to recreate the damage any time you saw Keanu Reeves left hand throughout the rest of the movie.

The problem is that Keanu Reeves is left-handed, which meant that a not insignificant amount of money was going to need to be spent on CGI for the new movie because you were going to be seeing that hand a lot. According to director Chad Stahelski...

No one creatively saw a problem with it, but it comes down to a simple matter of financials. Without giving away the spoiler, you saw it; you know what he does. That’s on his lead hand. You have a left-handed actor who’s just deformed his left hand and that left hand is in every shot of the third act of the movie. VFX wise, there’s a cost associated with that. There’s logistical problems and practical filming that are associated with that. The studio does their job of questioning my visions and my methods to see if I really like it

It seems that Lionsgate, the studio behind the John Wick franchise, had to at least ask the director if this decision was really a necessary one. While it was understood from a story perspective, movies are a commercial venture after all, and so cost is always going to be a concern. According to THR, The director apparently had to make concessions in the budget in other places in order to make sure the money was there to handle the CGI costs.

For whatever it's worth, odds are that the studio probably doesn't mind the additional CGI costs as much right now. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum had the biggest opening in the franchise history this past weekend, and a fourth film has already been green lit. Of course, most of John Wick: Chapter 4 is going to be that much more expensive because the injury in question won't be healing in the next movie, so the next film will need to use CGI for the entire run.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum is in theaters now.

Another episode, another week where ReelBlend co-host Jake Hamilton is in England.

This time, Jake’s on his own, covering the new Danny Boyle film Yesterday, but he still found time to join Sean for episode #70 of the ReelBlend podcast.

It’s just two of the guys this week, as Kevin’s on vacation on a remote island somewhere. So Sean and Jake dove into the news of the week, starting with that trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate. Have you seen it yet? It looks like this:

Staying on the theme of old sci-fi properties getting resuscitated, Jake and Sean shift to the story of Sir Ridley Scott entertaining the notion of continuing his Alien franchise now that Fox is over at Disney. Jake’s all for it, while Sean is done with that saga, completely.

Sean saw Aladdin over the Memorial Day weekend, and gives his review of Guy Ritchie’s live-action musical. The guys both saw Netflix’s The Perfection, and they weigh in on that, as well.

But the big get for Episode #70 was a candid conversation with Rocketman producer Matthew Vaughn, who helped get Taron Egerton cast as Elton John and also kind of helped seal the movie’s deal because of the friendship he made with Sir Elton while collaborating with him on Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The prolific producer opens up with ReelBlend about the making of Rocketman, the future of his own Kingsmen universe, and his thoughts on Marvel now owning X-Men and the Fantastic Four.

Will Smith Has Seen Aladdin’s Final Cut, And He’s Hyped

Will Smith Has Seen Aladdin’s Final Cut, And He’s Hyped

Disney fans rejoice! The studio’s live-action season soon awaits as Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King get ready to hit theaters in the coming spring and summer months. It’s a lot of nostalgia to process at once, and each movie has some beautifully animated shoes to fill – metaphorically anyway: elephants, genies or lions don’t need footwear.

Of all the highly-anticipated performances, Will Smith’s Genie might be the one we are most anxiously bracing ourselves for, following Robin Williams’ iconic, hilarious and touching animated performance as the entity of the lamp. The actor recently took to his Instagram to announce he’s seen the upcoming movie and he’s blazing with joy. Check out his reaction below:

Are we ready to get on the hype train with Will Smith? The Aladdin star is calling it straight “FIRE” (emojis and all) and he doesn’t seem to mean that in a “hot garbage fire” kind of way.

A past Aladdin teaser revealing the first look of Will Smith’s blue genie caused some concern in fans of the movie’s CGI. The first image of the character went completely viral and was criticized for being "terrifying." However, the recent first full trailer eased some of this apprehension, as the wish-granting character’s CGI looks more complete.

The new trailer also offered a closer glance at the movie’s music numbers and recreations of famous scenes, such as Aladdin’s first meeting with the Genie, his makeover into a prince and one romantic magic carpet ride. The latest preview certainly looks promising and has many fans getting the memorable songs back in their heads and ready to see Disney’s new take on the popular animated film from the studio’s renaissance.

We should note the reaction from Will Smith is, of course, a bit of self-advertising on his part, and the actor certainly wants people to get excited and go out to see the movie. If Smith went on social media and said he hated the movie, that would certainly hurt the film’s chances at gaining positive buzz. However, it does help to hear the star sound excited for the release and the fact that he’s seen it means it’s that much closer to hitting big screens.

Following the in the footsteps of 1992 film, Aladdin follows a street urchin (Mena Massoud), who comes across a magic lamp, thanks to shady deal with Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) and finds a genie inside who helps disguise himself as a prince in order to woo the beautiful Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott) as a vile power play unfolds between Jafar and the Sultan of Agrabah (Navid Negahban).

The film also stars Alan Tudyk as Iago the parrot and SNL’s Nasim Pedrad as a new character named Dalia, and it will include two new songs. Aladdin flies into theaters on May 24.

Joe Russo Wants Marvel Fans To See Endgame Opening Weekend To Avoid Spoilers

Joe Russo Wants Marvel Fans To See Endgame Opening Weekend To Avoid Spoilers
Hawkeye in Endgame

The stakes for the Marvel Cinematic Universe could not be higher. With Captain Marvel in the rear view, there's only one movie left in Phase Three. Avengers: Endgame will be the cumulation of the entire MCU thus far, and will finally catch up on the surviving heroes in the wake of Thanos' mass murder. Marvel Studios has been keeping its cards close to the chest for the last year, so the general public has no idea what might go down during the highly anticipated movie.

But the wait is nearly over, as Endgame is set to arrive in less than a month. The marketing material has been purposefully vague, not revealing much about the contents of the Russo Brothers' highly anticipated blockbuster. Everyone involved seems to be worried about spoilers, including The Russo Brothers themselves. Joe Russo recently encouraged fans to see the film on opening weekend in order to avoid spoilers, saying:

I think this one has even more spoilers than the last one. This is a culture that wants everything now, and it’s getting worse. The world is connected via social media, and information travels within seconds. If you’ve been following along with this narrative for 10 years, you’re going to want to protect yourself. It’s best to go in clean. I encourage people to go opening weekend because I’m sure everything is going to hit the internet the moment the movie hits the screen.

When it comes to the biggest blockbuster of the year, timing matters. So Joe Russo wants the fans to run to theaters during Endgame's first weekend of showings. Because we all know that the internet and social media isn't a safe place for spoilers.

Joe Russo's comments to Box Office Mojo make a great deal of sense, as the public knows little to nothing about the contents of Avengers: Endgame. As such, basically every frame of the upcoming blockbuster can be considered a spoiler. Infinity War showed that the Russo Brothers were pulling no punches when it came to their pair of blockbusters, so the narrative possibilities and consequences are totally in their court.

Avengers: Infinity War saw a ton of characters perish, both by the physical hands of Thanos and by The Decimation. This gives the chance for the surviving heroes to carry the events of Endgame. But smart money says there will be more character deaths in the new movie. Many of Marvel's biggest stars are coming to the end of their contracts, including Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans. So it seems more than possible that they could perish in order to save the universe and hopefully reverse the affects of the snap.

Luckily, answers are coming. But in order to see Avengers: Endgame without Twitter ruining major plot points, you may want to head to theaters as soon as it hits theaters next month. At least, that's Joe Russo's suggestion.

Avengers: Endgame will finally arrive in theaters on April 26th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Dumbo: Everything We Know About Disney's Live Action Remake

Dumbo: Everything We Know About Disney's Live Action Remake
drunk Dumbo

2019 is going to be a big year for Disney's live-action remakes of their famous animated films. There will be no fewer than three of them coming this year, including Aladdin and The Lion King both coming as big summer releases. The first entry of the year, however, will be the reinvention of Disney's flying elephant, Dumbo. It feels like something of an unusual choice for a remake, but based on the cast and the crew that is making the new Dumbo a reality, it does seem that the right people are involved to make this one something special.

While many of Disney's remakes have been fairly true retellings of the original story, Dumbo is different in that it will be creating a lot of brand new material to complete the tale of the misfit elephant. The basic premise is all still there, but there's a lot more involved. Here's everything we know about Disney's upcoming live-action remake of Dumbo.

What Have We Seen From Dumbo?

Luckily, we no longer have to wonder what the eponymous elephant will look like in this re-imagining of the classic Disney tale. A teaser trailer for Dumbo dropped in mid-June 2018, followed by a full trailer in November giving us some good looks at the cute little guy, along with many of his human co-stars. And, from what we've seen it certainly looks like it could stack up to be a wonderfully magical story.

What Is Dumbo Rated?

Dumbo has been rated PG by the MPAA. This puts the film on par with all four of Disney's most recent, live-action remakes, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast have ended up with PG ratings. While the original Dumbo was a G-rated affair, it seems quite difficult to secure that rating these days. Although, the live-action 101 Dalmatians remake from 1996 did manage it. It's hard to imagine what could be added to Dumbo that might make it unsuitable for young kids, though the original movie did include an elephant getting drunk, which probably gets you at least a PG-rating today.

What Is Dumbo's Release Date?

Dumbo will be Disney's second major release for 2019. On March 8 Marvel will open things with Captain Marvel and Dumbo will follow close behind on March 29, 2019. It releases the week after Godzilla sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the week before DC comics movie Shazam. There are also a number of potential competitors for the family movie dollar being released around the same time, with the long-awaited How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World opening in February. While Dumbo is opening outside of the "summer movie season" it's opening in the same window that the Beauty and the Beast remake did, so major box office success is certainly possible.

What Is Dumbo About?

The original Dumbo was Disney's fourth animated feature, and its story is fairly simple, as shown by the film's 64-minute runtime. Dumbo is born, is mistreated by the other animals due to his abnormally large ears, and is befriended by a mouse who then helps him discover his talent for flight which the ears provide. This makes Dumbo a circus star. There isn't a lot more there, which explains why the new film will be adding a lot to the story, primarily through new human characters.

This version of Dumbo will primarily focus on a character named Holt Ferrier, a former circus star who is now a different man having returned from war. He is hired by circus owner Max Medici to take care of Dumbo, a newborn elephant who is a circus laughing stock largely due to his oversized ears. However, after Holt's children discover that Dumbo can fly, entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere and aerialist Colette Marchant insert themselves as they see star potential, and money, in Dumbo.

The Director

Dumbo promises to be a unique film and Disney has certainly succeeded in getting a unique director to bring it to life. Tim Burton is behind the camera on the new remake which promises to make Dumbo a little weird in a very special way. Burton is no stranger to working with Disney. He got his start in film working with Disney animation on films like The Fox and the Hound and The Black Cauldron. He then returned to the House of Mouse to make movies such as his feature-length Frankenweenie and one of Disney's most successful live-action remakes, Alice in Wonderland. While Burton isn't necessarily known for it, films like Big Fish show that he is perfectly capable of the sort of movie that warms your heart, which we can expect Dumbo will ultimately be.

The Writer

The screenplay for this new version of Dumbo comes from Ehren Kruger. Kruger may not be a household name but he's responsible for some of the biggest movies ever made. He wrote or co-wrote three of the Transformers sequels but may be better known to horror movie fans as the writer of Scream 3 and the first two of The Ring movies among others. He's also written fan favorites like The Brothers Grimm, Reindeer Games and Arlington Road and movies that weren't necessarily favorites, like the recent Ghost in the Shell remake with Scarlett Johansson. There really isn't anything on his resume that looks anything like what we expect Dumbo to be, which could indicate a very different sort of movie or it could indicate Kruger is taking his first shot at something very different for him.

Will There Be Music In Dumbo?

Following the smash hit that was the Beauty and the Beast remake, one always has to wonder how Disney's classic music might be handled by the remake. The original Dumbo isn't a musical in the traditional sense, as most of the music isn't actually sung by the characters. Still, there are a few well-known songs from Dumbo including "Baby Mine," "When I See an Elephant Fly" and "Casey Jr." That last song is especially noteworthy as a promotional picture of director Tim Burton (see above) shows him on board the film's circus train which is very clearly labeled as being Casey Jr.

However, Dumbo won't be a musical. Like Cinderella and Maleficent, we'd expect to hear modern covers of the film's most famous songs, likely included over the end credits rather than part of the story proper. The film's trailer does include a version of "Baby Mine," the movie's tear-jearker, which could very likely be played at the same point in the new film.

Dumbo

Of all the characters in the new Dumbo, the one we seem to know the least about is the title character. In the original Dumbo, the elephant is completely mute, and that appears to be the case here as well. Dumbo is being brought to life via the same computer animation that made the animals of The Jungle Book look real. It seems like Dumbo may end up being more of a secondary character in his own story, with the focus being on the humans that surround him and how they treat him.

Holt Farrier

The part of Holt Farrier, the war vet who becomes Dumbo's caretaker will be played by Colin Farrell. Farrell most recently worked with Disney on Saving Mr. Banks, the story of the making of Mary Poppins, where he played the father of P.L. Travers in the flashback sequences. From everything that we know about the plot, it sounds like, if Dumbo isn't really our main character, Farrier is. He'll likely be the one fighting to keep Dumbo safe while others attempt to take advantage of him once it is discovered what he can do. At one point it was rumored that Will Smith was attached to Dumbo, and it's likely this is the role Smith would have played. Instead, Will Smith will appear in another Disney remake a couple months after Dumbo comes out, as the Genie in Aladdin.

Max Medici

The role of circus owner Max Medici will be played by Danny DeVito. DeVito previously voiced the trainer of heroes Philoctetes (aka Phil) in Disney's animated Hercules. He also previously worked with director Tim Burton in Batman Returns as the Penguin. There is a Ringmaster character in the original animated Dumbo who is likely the basis for this character, but he doesn't have much impact on the story. Whether he is a benevolent circus owner who loves his animals, or a cruel one who mistreats them, is not clear. DeVito is certainly capable of taking the character in either direction. Though he probably isn't the main villain of the movie, as that role appears to be played by somebody else.

V.A. Vandevere

Michael Keaton will play the role of entrepreneur V. A. Vandevere. Keaton hasn't done a major production for Walt Disney Pictures before, though he has provided voices for Pixar in both the Toy Story and Cars franchise in years past. Like Danny DeVito, he worked with Tim Burton on the Batman movies, in the title role back in the late '80s and early '90s. We know from the official plot synopsis that Vandevere will see the potential for money in Dumbo's ability to fly and look to cash in on this. The trailer makes it pretty clear that this is our villain of the piece. Dumbo will be exploited by the unscrupulous businessman, while those that helped raise the little elephant will try to protect him.

Tom Hanks was originally rumored to be in the running to play the villain of Dumbo and while that didn't pan out, Michael Keaton brings a lot of the same stature to the role. Although, seeing Tom Hanks play a bad guy would have been a shocking thing. Michael Keaton in the same role is a lot easier to buy.

Colette Marchant

Eva Green will play what appears to be the major female role in Dumbo as an aerialist named Colette Marchant. She's an associate of V.A. Vandevere and it sounds like the two may be business partners in addition to Marchant being a circus performer herself. This likely means that Green will be a villain as well, assuming that she knows everything that her colleague is up to. This will be Eva Green's third production with Tim Burton following the recent Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and 2012's Dark Shadows.

J. Griffin Remington

The last character of note is named J. Griffen Remington and will be played by Oscar winner Alan Arkin. We know very little about the character beyond the fact that he's a "Wall Street tycoon." If I were to guess, he's probably a potential money source for Michael Keaton's character, who will need money in order to make Dumbo the massive attraction he envisions. That's all speculation, however. The character has only been seen briefly, in a short sneak peek video that was released in February, and it's not revealed how the character will fit into the plot. With Arkin in the role we can be fairly confident the part is important, but since the character doesn't get a mention in the official plot synopsis, it's hard to guess how he'll fit into the story.

Other Dumbo Characters And References

The most conspicuous absences here are all the characters that we actually remember from the animated version of Dumbo. Timothy Q. Mouse, an actual mouse who befriends Dumbo, was the major speaking role in the animated movie. We briefly see a mouse in ringmaster garb in the trailer, implying that we'll get a few references to the animated movie in places where the story has changed.

We also see a black feather that Dumbo plays with in the trailer. This is a clear reference to the "magic feather" that Dumbo receives, which he believes is the thing that allows him to fly. This likely means he won't be receiving it from a flock of crows, which, if you remember the original animated film, is a good thing.

Disney's live-action remakes have been largely successful with audiences in recent years. However, the additions to Dumbo will make this the first movie since Maleficent to tell a significantly different story than the animated movie that inspired it. The question is, just how open is the audience to seeing a very different story of Dumbo? We don't have much longer to wait until we find out.

Does Marvel's 5-Year Plan Include The X-Men? Here's What Kevin Feige Says

Does Marvel's 5-Year Plan Include The X-Men? Here's What Kevin Feige Says
Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner and Kodi Smit-McPhee in X-Men: Apocalypse

One of the biggest things to come from the merger of Fox and Disney is that Marvel Studios now has the film rights to the X-Men. With the confirmation that the upcoming Dark Phoenix will be the final chapter of the existing X-Men universe, fans are looking forward to what appears to be the inevitable inclusion of the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, as things currently stand in the MCU, we may not be seeing the X-Men anytime soon. According to Marvel chief Kevin Feige, the current plan for the next five years of Marvel movies doesn't include the mutants. According to Feige...

It’ll be a while. It’s all just beginning and the five-year plan that we’ve been working on, we were working on before any of that was set. So really it’s much more, for us, less about specifics of when and where [the X-Men will appear] right now and more just the comfort factor and how nice it is that they’re home. That they’re all back. But it will be a very long time.

Kevin Feige tells i09 that Marvel had been working on plans for the next phase of the MCU long before the deal with Fox was made, and thus, those plans didn't include a place for the X-Men. Feige says that those plans haven't been significantly impacted by this addition, so it likely won't be until after the current plan is finished that new characters, like the X-Men, will be added.

On the one hand, this makes a lot of sense. While we don't have a lot of visibility to what Marvel has planned for its next phase, we can assume a lot of work has been done behind the scenes. A lot of that work would go out the window and need to be started over, all with a much shorter turn around time, if the X-Men were made an immediate concern.

While Marvel has yet to confirm anything officially after Spider-Man: Far From Home comes out this July, we do think we know what's coming. Movies about Black Widow, and The Eternals have been rumored. Sequels for Doctor Strange and Black Panther are expected, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is back on the schedule, though it will now be coming out later than previously scheduled.

And there's really no need to bring in the X-Men too soon. There are plenty of other characters that can be focused on in future films and the longer the X-Men are left alone, the easier it will be to bring them back in a new, rebooted, form.

At the same time, as i09 points out, Marvel pivoted pretty quickly once the studio made a deal with Sony to get Spider-Man into the MCU, so it wouldn't be the first time plans had changed because new opportunities had presented themselves. There's always the possibility that, even if there are no specific plans to bring in the X-Men right now, those plans could always change.

6 Things The Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Needs To Include From The Video Games

6 Things The Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Needs To Include From The Video Games
Sonic The Hedgehog

Sega’s mascot Sonic The Hedgehog is finally getting his own movie, and it’s safe to say there are quite a few folks worried about it. Granted, it sounds like things are on the right track with Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic and Jim Carrey portraying Dr. Robotnik, but it takes more than great casting to make a good video game movie. If it didn’t, Doom may be remembered as a masterpiece, and it’s almost universally not.

So what makes a great video game movie? There’s no explicit formula, but it’s fair to say sticking to the source material more often than not will make people happy. That’s a bit complicated considering the Sonic franchise has changed quite a bit since its first game, and not always in ways consumers have appreciated. In spite of that, should the movie contain these types of references to the franchise, Sonic The Hedgehog fans will be satisfied.

Music From The Sega Genesis Era

The early Sonic The Hedgehog games feature some of the best videogame music of the '90s. Green Hill Zone, Emerald Hill Zone, basically all the "Zones" from the first and second games have iconic songs the movie should include. Whether it’s a phone ringtone, a song on the radio or an orchestral track doesn’t matter. We may get something even better as the prolific Junkie XL could craft quite the homage to Sonic's tracks.

Of all the things the Sonic The Hedgehog movie should include from the video games, this is definitely the most important. It’s fair to assume many ticket holders will show up for the nostalgia factor, and what better way than to hit them with the ear-worms they jammed out to while playing their Sega Genesis and blasting through bottles of Kool-aid Jammers? Did we get older, or was there always never enough juice in those things?

Sonic's Friends

Sonic The Hedgehog may be the most important character of the franchise, but he's not the only one folks love. There's his sidekick Tails, who's been with Sonic since Sonic The Hedgehog 2, and other iconic characters like Knuckles and Amy. That just scratches the surface of this universe really, and doesn't even get into the Chao, Blaze or the gun-wielding anti-hero Shadow The Hedgehog. If Shadow doesn't get introduced, how can we have a gritty spin off?

I kid, mainly, although it will be a bit weird if Sonic The Hedgehog only has Sonic as the sole speedy thing rushing around. So far, there's been no mention of any other of Sonic's friends, so this may just be a solo adventure where friends could come into the picture in latter installments. Or, this could be a case where the film pulls a Super Mario Bros. and make bastardizations of the iconic characters. We just don't know yet!

Smart-Ass Dialogue

Sonic didn't speak in his first set of video game adventures, but his television show and games that followed have made him out to be a bit of a smart-ass. Not so much that he's some massive douchebag, but kind of in a way that feels very reminiscent of Bart Simpson. If Sonic The Hedgehog wants to stay true to Sonic's character, there needs to be some overconfidence and smart-ass behavior incorporated.

It appears there will be some of that, at least if one interprets comments by Jim Carrey about the film that way. He assured there will be some edgy moments that appeal to all audiences, although was speaking primarily to his character. He also mentioned the family group the movie is catered to, which speaks to the PG rating. Honestly, that's a good wheelhouse for the character, and he can have that "edge" without it being too cringe-inducing.

Massive And Elaborate Robots

Dr. Ivo Robotnik is known for robots and fights Sonic with them throughout the franchise. The creations he pilots may not be the best quality, but they're certainly big, elaborate and fun to look at. Typically Sonic can destroy these with a handful of jumps, or via some weak spot on the robot. He has the design methods of Star Wars: Rogue One's Galen Erso, except he's not secretly wishing Sonic destroys his evil machines.

The ideal creation is some robot that has Robotnik chilling in a glass dome and some form of retractable drills. Robotnik really loves the massive drills, almost as much as he loves loading up every machine with an escape pod that always keeps him out of Sonic's clutches once the fight is over. If one mega robot shows up with either or both of these attributes, I know I'll be a happy camper.

Gold Rings

Gold rings are perhaps the only thing as synonymous with Sonic The Hedgehog than the character himself. They're the game's form of health, and Sonic collects them throughout levels in order to stay alive after being hit. Should he be hit without any rings on him, he loses a life. Will Sonic The Hedgehog pay homage to this vital game mechanic in some way?

If it does, I'm reasonably certain it won't be shown in a way in which Sonic is collecting a bunch of rings randomly floating around. Perhaps rings are the currency of this world, and we'll see them in some micro form being exchanged for goods. If that were the case, it'd be cool to see Sonic obsessively collect these and then lose them all when he takes a big hit.

Cute And Furry Animals

The casual video gamer may not have known or cared why there were so many cute and furry little animals locked away at the end of each classic Sonic The Hedgehog game, but knowing why explains a lot of the tension between Sonic and Dr. Robotnik. Dr. Robotnik uses the little animals to fuel his robots he creates, which is why they also pop out of enemies when Sonic smashes them.

We have no idea of whether or not that plot thread will be used in Sonic The Hedgehog, but it would be the traditional way to establish Dr. Robotnik as a villain in the movie. After all, who is going to side with a guy enslaving adorable animals within machines for energy? It's actually way more twisted than the games led on the longer one thinks about it, so hopefully the movie uses this plot point in some way.

Sonic The Hedgehog is due to release Friday, November 8. Those interested in the movie can feel free to share their suggestions for what should be in the movie below, or chime in on how they think this movie will be received by audiences.

Sinemia Offers Subscribers An Unlimited-Tickets Plan, But At A Cost

Sinemia Offers Subscribers An Unlimited-Tickets Plan, But At A Cost

For those cinephiles who want to see as many movies as possible, MoviePass' unlimited plan was a dream come true, giving them the ability to see a movie a day for $10 a month. Such an unbelievable deal was long derided for being unsustainable, claims that in the end proved true. Months and countless changes to the service late, and MoviePass's unlimited plan is no more. However, MoviePass broke open the marketplace, and now one of MoviePass's biggest competitors, Sinemia, is swooping in to capitalize on audiences who miss that deal. Sinemia is now offering its own unlimited tickets plan. However, it comes at a much more costly price of $29.99 a month.

Sinemia's new unlimited plan, which falls under the company's Classic tier offerings, gives subscribers 30 movie tickets a month for $29.99. The new plan works at most theaters, but is only for 2D movies and no premium formats, just like MoviePass. Unlike MoviePass, however, Sinemia allows you to reserve tickets in advance without needing to be at the theater, and there are no blackout dates. This plan has been available to Sinemia subscribers in Europe since 2014, where it has been the company's most popular plan. In the announcement about the new unlimited plan, Sinemia highlights that this plan is sustainable, but still offers a great value. With the average movie ticket in the U.S. costing around $9.00, the plan pays for itself after 3 tickets. So you go see one movie a week and you're getting your money's worth, especially if you live in an area where tickets are much more than $9.00.

This is also not the only plan Sinemia offers. Instead of going with a one size fits all approach, Sinemia offers plans for unlimited movies, as well as 1, 2 or 3 tickets a month, and options for 3D and premium format tickets. Sinemia also offers family plans for anywhere from two to six people. Clearly Sinemia is aiming to offer an abundance of choice to cater to all moviegoing habits and this new unlimited plan now offers something for those most voracious of moviegoers. You can check all of the plans out on Sinemia.com.

Obviously this plan may be a hard pill to swallow for those who were enjoying unlimited movies for a third of the price. Although the price of Sinemia's new plan may seem steep, that is really only in relation to the steal we got used to with MoviePass. Ironically, once upon a time, MoviePass too was $30 a month, before launching the $10 a month plan and gaining millions of subscribers. That victory defeated MoviePass's unlimited plan. That said, this plan is still on the pricey side, especially with AMC's Stubs A-List plan offering 3 movies a week for $10 less. Of course, if you want to see as many movies as possible with the greatest flexibility in theaters, Sinemia's new plan is worth checking out. This is just the latest salvo in the movie subscription wars, and the more offerings and competition there are, the better it is for the consumer.

No matter how you're paying for your movie tickets, there's plenty to see the rest of this year, so check it all out in our release calendar.
