How Much Avengers: Endgame Made Opening Night

How Much Avengers: Endgame Made Opening Night
Nebula in Endgame looking badass

Avengers: Endgame pre-sales have been insane ever since they went on sale, so people should already be fully aware that the new Marvel movie was going to have a big opening night. But being aware that a movie is big and understanding exactly how big a movie is are two different things, which is why we’re about to talk opening night numbers here.

Obviously, Avengers: Endgame absolutely dominated on opening night, with early reports indicating the flick could bring in at least $43 million. At the time, thanks to all the myriad showings that happened beginning at 6 p.m. yesterday evening, Deadline reported that the number could ultimately be as high as $57 million. Yes, for one evening of showings.

In fact, however, once the final numbers dropped, the movie made even more money domestically. Variety is reporting Avengers: Endgame opened to a record-breaking $60 million dollars. That would be a lot for an entire opening weekend, but it's an excessive number for just one night.

The previous number to beat for opening night was for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made $57 million domestically in its initial entrance into theaters. Over the weekend, Avengers: Endgame will play in over 4,600 theaters, so the numbers should only grow moving forward.

We’ve been reporting for weeks that Avengers: Endgame would open to record numbers. Certain showtimes have been sold out in various parts of the country for days and days. The AMC on 42nd Street had most showtimes until the middle of the night sold out, with only screenings at 1:45, 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. available, for example.

If Avengers: Endgame actually hit $57 million last night, the final Phase Three movie could be well on the way to making the $800 million that was estimated as a possibility by early box office trackers in terms of worldwide numbers. And I’m not talking $800 million in total; instead, I’m saying this movie could make $800 million during opening weekend. How ‘bout them apples?

To compare, when Avengers: Infinity War opened around this time last year, that movie also had an incredible opening weekend, pulling in $640.4 million during its first few days in theaters worldwide. For that movie, the flick opened a little later in China, which is why some are anticipating Endgame could blow past the $800 million mark.

This time around Avengers: Endgame is already breaking records in China in terms of pre-ordered ticket sales, so theoretically the numbers could be even higher there.

Domestically, Avengers: Endgame is also expected to be a winner and early numbers have U.S. and Canada totals at just under $300 million. With $57 million to kickstart that, the movie should be in good shape, as Friday nights and Saturdays are even bigger moviegoing days. (Although presumably a lot of people went Thursday night so as not to get spoiled.)

Ultimately, so far this year the box office has been a little sluggish compared to previous years. While titles like Glass, Us, and Captain Marvel have done well, there hasn’t been a Black Panther-type of movie to really rally insane numbers into theaters prior to this weekend. Avengers: Endgame could ramp things up considerably. I’m sure theaters are hoping it does.

Are we on our way to a record box office year? Only time will tell. But we will definitely keep you updated in regards to Endgame. In addition, to see when the likes of Godzilla: King of the Monsters and The Lion King will have their own chance to shine in the sun, take a look at our full movies schedule.

The Russo Brothers Don't Think Iron Man Was Wrong About Ultron

The Russo Brothers Don't Think Iron Man Was Wrong About Ultron
Ultron in Age of Ultron

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame has been in theaters for three weekends, still maintaining the top spot at the box office over new releases like Detective Pikachu. The Russo Brothers did the impossible with the blockbuster, surpassing even Infinity War in regards to scope and character-driven story. Endgame was intimately connected to the previous 21 movies in the MCU, and that includes Phase Two's finale Avengers: Age of Ultron.

When Iron Man and Nebula were rescued by Captain Marvel and towed back to Earth in Endgame, Tony had an altercation with Steve Rogers. Exhausted and starving, he maintained he was right all along regarding the measures needed to properly protect the planet. Now The Russo Brothers have come to Tony's defense in regards to his Age of Ultron actions, with Joe Russo saying:

He was not wrong that there was a great threat coming, and they needed to build a suit of armor around the world, and at what point do civil liberties trump—no pun intended—do civil liberties come before the government’s ability to protect its citizens? I think what’s interesting is that to some extent, they had to go through this. There was a sense of destiny to this. They had to go through it to win it. And in a way both he and Cap were right.

Captain America and Iron Man's relationship started becoming strained during Avengers: Age of Ultron, as they had idealogical differences to the morality of superheroics. Ultron's inception came as a result of Tony's singular focus on protecting the planet, although Earth could have used it when Thanos and his forcea came knocking in Infinity War.

Of course, Joe Russo's comments to Slate also point out that Captain America has his own valid points in the argument. Both heroes had the best of intentions, but were ultimately unable to come together and find viable compromises. That powder keg eventually exploded in Captain America: Civil War, and it broke up the Avengers in the process.

Ultron may have ended up turning against his creators and the planet, but the thought behind his creation was a big picture idea. Tony and Bruce Banner wanted to provide a more comprehensive protection of the planet, with Iron Man knowing that the Battle of New York was no fluke. Unfortunately, Ultron had other plans-- although Vision was also born in the process.

But Thanos was only able to be defeated because the surviving heroes were able to work together. Despite Tony's initial reaction to arriving home, he was able to bury the hatchet with Steve Rogers, and they made the time heist happen together. The duo also faced off against Thanos during the epic final battle, and Cap even witnessed Iron Man's final breath.

How Much Captain Marvel Made On Opening Night

How Much Captain Marvel Made On Opening Night
Captain Marvel about to take flight

This weekend, Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie and the penultimate chapter in the MCU’s Phase 3 arrives in the form of Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson. Captain Marvel is a lesser-known character that has only been referenced, not seen, on the big screen until now, so how did she fare in her cinematic debut? Well, the weekend is just beginning, but Captain Marvel has already showed what she’s made of earning $20.7 million opening night.

Captain Marvel felt the need for speed, getting off to a fast start in its debut weekend with an impressive $20.7 million in preview screenings Thursday night, according to THR. That’s an incredible performance and one that trails only Black Panther’s $25.2 million in previews for solo superhero movies starring a new character. It’s also the fifth-biggest MCU preview haul behind only the aforementioned Black Panther and the team-up movies Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.

Carol Danvers has also snagged the second-largest March preview screening gross behind only DC’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which earned $27.7 million in 2016. Speaking of DC, although that company beat Marvel to the box office with a female-led superhero film, the power of the Marvel brand (and perhaps the Infinity War tease) propelled Captain Marvel well past Wonder Woman’s $11 million in preview screenings.

Captain Marvel has just begun to take flight though and she is headed towards a massive opening weekend both domestically and around the globe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Captain Marvel is projected to pull in over $60 million on Friday on the way towards a Marvel-ous opening weekend of $155 million to $160 million.

Even $150 million would still give Captain Marvel the second-best opening of all time for a comic book movie starring a new character, behind only Black Panther’s $200 million, and that character was already established thanks to his role in Captain America: Civil War.

A $155-$160 million opening weekend would be remarkable and especially impressive considering that the long-range tracking in January had Captain Marvel landing at around $140 million, and at the time that seemed somewhat ludicrous. Then the early tracking closer to release predicted a much more down to earth $100 million. So not only is Captain Marvel likely to beat that, it’s also looking like it will beat the number that seemed so outlandish and may do so by a wide margin.

Internationally things are looking good too. Captain Marvel opened in all major markets sans Japan this week, including a release in China at the post-Chinese New Year box office. Thus far Captain Marvel has made $44 million internationally, not including China. In the Middle Kingdom, the film had the second-biggest opening day of any MCU film there, making $34 million.

The Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck-directed film is doing better business than any MCU movie fronted by a new character in many markets and in Brazil, Captain Marvel had the biggest opening day ever behind only Avengers: Infinity War.

All told, Captain Marvel is looking like it will blast like a rocket past $300 million worldwide this weekend. It’s quite a feat for a lesser-known and cinematically unproven character. How it ever overcame the effective power of internet trolls and boycotts, we may never know.

On the reception front, Captain Marvel has received overall positive reviews, although not everyone loves it (even some women!). Still, it looks like it will be another huge win for the MCU heading in to Avengers: Endgame.

Captain Marvel is now playing. Check out what we thought of the film and make sure you know what ticket to buy before heading out to the theater. Take a look at our release schedule to see everything else headed your way this year. and for all your movie news, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

Jeremy Renner Shares Video Right Before Getting His Avengers: Endgame Mohawk
Hawkeye in Endgame

It's been two long weeks since Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters, and the fandom is still recovering from the film's myriad twists. The Russo Brothers meticulously crafted the blockbuster, connecting the story to myriad other installments and giving the original Avengers lineup significantly more screen time. This includes Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye, who returned from his Infinity War absence with a fresh new haircut and penchant for murder.

Ahead of Endgame's release, there was a ton of talk about Hawkeye's new mohawk. Play on words aside, Clint Barton's new do has been turned into countless memes, and is already iconic in its own right. Now Jeremy Renner has shared a video from the movie's set, revealing the moments before his mohawk was born. Check it out.

Way to cut out the big ending, Renner. This video shows Hawkeye moments before the new mohawk arrived. If only the actor knew how many jokes would come out of Twitter.

This new video, which comes to us from Jeremy Renner's official Instagram, is a peak behind the curtain of Marvel Studios' top secret process. Since the MCU is such a well-oiled machine at this point, it's easy for the public to forget that the franchise is just full of regular people doing their job. This includes the hair and makeup team, who are tasked with creating each characters' signature look. Cue the Hawkeye fade.

The contents of Avengers: Endgame were kept under wraps until the film's release, with both the studio and Russo Brothers doing everything they could in order to guard the myriad twists. This means the cast must follow strict guidelines, with many actors not given full scripts or the details of scenes before filming. And videos needed to be kept under lock and key for years.

Now that Avengers: Endgame is going into its third weekend in theaters, the cast and crew are finally getting more chatty about the massive blockbuster's contents. Co-directors The Russo Brothers officially lifted the spoiler ban after Endgame's second weekend in theaters, so social media and regular water cooler talk has really stepped up in regards to the myriad plot twists of the 22nd MCU installment.

With the spoiler ban lifted, cast members from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been slowly revealing behind the scenes look at Avengers: Endgame. Jeremy Renner wasn't the only Avenger to snap videos from the set, with Chris Pratt posting clips from the film's epic final battle. Plus, we've seen photos from the all-female Marvel lunch, which was apparently thrown by Robert Downey Jr. himself. Overall, it looks like Endgame was a blast to make--despite the sky high anticipation and pressure coming from the fans.

Pet Sematary Director Explains Why The Film’s Ending Was Changed

Pet Sematary Director Explains Why The Film’s Ending Was Changed
Pet Sematary Jason Clarke looking concerned in the basement, with his zombie daughter behind him

Warning: SPOILERS for Pet Sematary are discussed in this article. If you haven’t seen the film yet and want to stay unspoiled, please bookmark and come back once you’re current.

In the 2019 remake of Pet Sematary, there’s a pretty big change to how the famed Stephen King story ends. It arrives off the back of a lot of smaller changes that build up to the big finale, with the end result being something so pitch black that it hits harder than the entire third act of the 1983 novel. And as it turns out, there was another ending that was shot and audience tested, which would have been even bleaker, according to the film’s directors.

When speaking in a recent interview about the film, directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer talked about a lot of material that was cut from Pet Sematary’s final cut. Amidst remarks about deleted content that fleshed out the relationships between Louis and Jud, as well as Louis and his daughter Ellie, an entire alternate ending was shot for the film; an ending that, according to Dennis Widmyer’s remarks below, was pretty hard to cut:

That [alternate] ending we shot first, and then we decided, you know, to have this other ending – so the studio could test two different endings…We [edited] them both and both endings [test] scored pretty equally. They’re both disturbing and dark. [But] I would say that the current ending [in the final film] sends off the audience with a smile on its face, while at the same time though, [they’re saying] ‘That was that was messed up!’ Whereas the other one, I don’t think anyone would be smiling. The other one has more of a bleak, kind of sad tone to it.

While we’ve covered the ending of Pet Sematary’s 2019 in depth, here's the short version: Ellie turns out to be the kid who dies in this version, and she comes back to life with a bit of an agenda. That agenda includes killing and resurrecting her mother, who then kills and resurrects her husband. The final shot of the film sees Ellie and her parents returning home, with Church in tow, in order to retrieve the youngest member of their family, Gage.

It can be understood that the filmmakers and studio heads behind Pet Sematary didn’t want to send fans out of the theater with a sense of horrible unease. The subject matter is pretty grim, no matter which version you partake in, and being completely honest, the implication of that ending’s darkness kind of does put a smile on your face in the way that Widmyer specified while speaking to Slashfilm. But if that’s the ending that turned out to be the lighter of the two, what the hell is the other ending supposed to contain?

Frankly, our guess is that it’s ether a slightly extended ending where we see Gage being carried off by his undead family, or it’s something so horrific we haven’t even thought of it yet. If there’s any justice, this curiosity worthy of killing the cat just might lead to the satisfaction of an alternate Blu-ray cut of the film, including all the other content that was hinted at by the directors. But at the very least, the facts that the deleted material is already being teased as being part of the home video release, with the ending hitting the internet shortly before then, is something that does make us happy about this particularly grizzly scenario.

Pet Sematary is in theaters now, with a home video release hinted at some point in July.

First Look At Halle Berrys John Wick 3 Character

First Look At Halle Berrys John Wick 3 Character

One thing is for certain in John Wick's world: he has no problem running into colorful characters who are talented at killing. When Keanu Reeves' character returns next year for John Wick: Chapter 3, he'll cross paths with a lot of new faces, one of whom will be played by Halle Berry. Now we have our first look at Berry's character, Sofia, and like John, she had a fondness for dogs.

Halle Berry was rumored to being looked at to play the female lead in John Wick: Chapter 3 back in April, and two weeks ago, she was one of the many actors confirmed to be joining the threequel. Officially, all we know about Sofia is that she's an assassin (like most of the people who John interacts with), although reportedly she has a small child. While the above picture doesn't offer any clues about what role she'll play in John Wick: Chapter 3, two things are clear. One, like others in her field, Sofia makes use of The Continental, the hotel catering specifically to members of the criminal underworld. Two, if you're thinking about messing with her while those dogs are at her side, you're barking up the wrong tree. Terrible pun aside, given what happened to John's first dog, I can't help fearing something bad will happen to Sofia's hounds, and I don't mean them accidentally stumbling upon Catwoman.

At the end of John Wick: Chapter 2, John was declared "excommunicado" for killing Santino D'Antonio on Continental grounds, an offense usually punishable by death. However, thanks to Winston, John was instead stripped of all his underworld privileges. Unfortunately, this couldn't have come at a worse time, as the High Council decided to double the bounty on John's head and offer it internationally. John Wick: Chapter 3 will see John fighting his way out of New York, though it remains to be seen in Halle Berry's Sofia will be one of the assassins gunning for him or if she'll end up being an ally.

Along with Halle Berry, John Wick: Chapter 3's lineup of new characters include Angelica Huston as The Director, Asia Kate Dillon as The Adjudicator, Mark Dacascos as Zero, Jason Mantzoukas as Tick Tock Man, Yayan Ruhian, Cecep Arif Rahman and Tiger Hu Chen. Hiroyuki Sanada has also reportedly been cast as the main antagonist, who is supposedly the head of a Japanese crime syndicate. The returning players will include Ian McShane's Winston, Lance Reddick's Charon, Common's Cassian, Ruby Rose's Ares and Laurence Fishburne's Bowery King.

John Wick: Chapter 3 will be released in theaters on May 17, 2019, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on its development. In the meantime, look though our 2018 release schedule to learn what movies are hitting the silver screen later this year.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Shazam! Ticket

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Shazam! Ticket
Shazam Mark Strong lightning zaps something in front of Zachary Levi

This weekend, one magic word unlocked excitement, adventure, and comedy: Shazam! It certainly feels like magic, as another opportunity for the DC Comics universe to course correct seems to have paid off magnificently. And, of course, with a new chance at box office glory comes another spin of the To 3D or Not To 3D wheel that comes round with pretty much every superhero movie.

If you’re looking for our official review on Shazam!, then you can head out to see what we thought of the movie in detail. However, if you’re wondering whether you should spend the extra 3D ticket money, or save it for a bid on lunch with Superman, then you’re in the right place. Slip your glasses on, and take a trip with us into the lair of 3D movies, as we discuss whether or not this particular film is worth your hard-earned cash.

Saying Shazam! doesn’t fit 3D is like saying capes look ridiculous on superheroes. Both mediums are practically made for each other, and with all of the action and excitement that takes place in director David F. Sandberg’s hero story, it looks like a natural fit. There’s a lot of flying, a lot of lightning action, and even some evil beasties that have the potential to grab the audience’s eyes. So it feels like 3D should be a slam dunk.

Unfortunately, as exciting as Shazam’s 3D conversion should be, the reality is that the finished conversion is ok at best. With all of the potential for visual excitement in a film that occupies such a popular moviegoing genre, the extra visual flare only really shows up in particular circumstances throughout the film. Typical fields like brightness and audience health are ok, but there’s a genuine lack of blur that certainly indicates the lack of any visual assets coming out of the screen. Even the depth of picture displayed in Shazam! seems to stop short of impressive.

Other than the odd scene that includes someone pointing at the screen, or Shazam knocking over an ATM with his lightning powers, there’s a lot of missed opportunities that aren’t taken with the 3D conversion’s ability to project into the audience. Moments like Shazam and Dr. Sivana engaged in high flying combat, or even the third act closer at the Chilladelphia Holiday Festival, could have had more visual flare to their proceedings. But sadly, not even the presence of the Seven Deadly Sins could bewitch the thrills off the screen.

Thankfully, Shazam’s depth of picture isn’t as much of a disappointment, as it does a pretty fair job drawing distance in the picture. Characters are properly spaced from each other, as well as their environments, so the foundation is strong and steady beyond the window. Past that point, the results are mixed, as the depths aren’t as infinite as they can be -- and they could be really deep in certain scenes of action, as well as wider shots of the film’s visual canvas.

For a film that has as many dark places and night shots as Shazam! does, there's no real problem with the brightness factor in the film overall. The usual dimming that takes over when putting on 3D glasses is still present, but besides that, it’s pretty crisp and clear to behold. Keep in mind, your mileage may vary, as various theaters take care of their projection rigs to different degrees; particularly when switching between 2D and 3D. But in the case of Shazam!, the theater that was used for comparison had a very bright projector, as the light levels were much brighter when the glasses were slipped off.

While slipping off the 3D glasses for any film using the premium format of the third dimension, you’ll usually notice a degree of blur is employed to create and enhance the 3D picture you’re supposedly seeing on the screen. Sometimes there’s 2D anchor points that draw certain objects or persons very little/no blur, allowing the rest of the scene to draw more blur in the picture. That said, with Shazam’s 3D conversion, there are more pieces that are drawn in 2D than one would expect. Even worse, there’s a lot of front and center real estate on the screen that’s shown with very little blur, which is fine for making background shots with tons of blur stand out, but does little for the characters we’re following on screen.

Sometimes, if 3D is done wrong, it gives the audience a huge headache, a bit of a nauseous feeling in their stomach, and some eye strain to complete the hat trick of discomfort. Shazam! never falls into any of those traps, as the entire picture is smooth sailing for the moviegoer. While certain pieces of this movie’s third dimensional enhancements don’t jump into the realm of the impressive, at the very least it’s not a hard film to watch if you choose to go to town in 3D.

Shazam! is ok in 3D, but it’s a conversion that could have been much better if given the opportunity to flourish. It’s not a waste of time if you choose to go and see it with the extra visual perspective; so if you’re not a 3D addict, you shouldn’t have a problem jumping right in. However, if you’re a regular citizen of the third dimension, you’ll probably want to skip this one and save the money.

Avengers: Endgame Already Passed A Major Box Office Milestone Overseas

Avengers: Endgame Already Passed A Major Box Office Milestone Overseas
Avengers endgame cast

After a full year of waiting, Avengers: Endgame is finally in theaters and, to very little surprise, the film is doing extremely well at the box office. Marvel's epic blockbuster was the biggest pre-seller ever in Fandango history, and it's already had the best opening day ever domestically. However, the film opened on Wednesday in China, and it's racing toward an unprecedented $324 million opening weekend.

Avengers: Endgame is the culmination of 11 years of films, and fans around the world are packing into theaters to see how the Avengers resolve the cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War. Domestically, the blockbuster is killing it right now. The film made more than $150 million opening day, including $60 million from Thursday previews.

Endgame is currently projected to make over $300 million when the North American weekend closes -- which is INSANE -- but China's forecast is just as high. Marvel's big finale opened in China two days earlier than the domestic premiere, so it had a bit of a head start going into the weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Endgame cruised at record speed to finish Friday in the range of $210 million to $220 million. On opening night, the film earned $107.2 million, smashing China's all-time single-day record. The previous title holder was a Chinese blockbuster called Monster Hunt 2 at $85 million.

But that's not all. It was originally projected that Endgame would take home around $270 million during it's five-day opening in China. However, now analysts have raised the bar and believe that the film could bow to $324 million, spurred by terrific word of mouth.

To put that into perspective, Endgame has made almost as much money during its opening weekend as the entire runs of the top three movies of the country. The other three films are The Fate of the Furious ($392.8 million), Furious 7 ($390.9 million) and last year's Avengers: Infinity War ($359.5 million).

Endgame is poised to defeat each one of those movies, and the only real question is by how much? Analysts predict that the movie will gross as much as $521 million in China over the course of its full run. This would make Endgame the very first Hollywood movie to gross over half a billion dollars in a single market outside of North America.

Again, that's INSANE.

So, combined with a projected $300 million domestic debut, Endgame could wrap up the weekend with as much as $950 million worldwide. The film is also poised to become the first ever movie to launch with $1 billion.

Well, it looks like everyone in the world is seeing Avengers: Endgame this weekend, so I imagine that you are too! Come back to CinemaBlend after you see the film to check out all the questions we have about the movie. And be sure to report back here tomorrow (Sunday, April 28) to read our full weekend box office rundown.

Why Making Little Woods Was A Huge Step For Tessa Thompson

Why Making Little Woods Was A Huge Step For Tessa Thompson
Lily James and Tessa Thompson talk in Little Woods

In the years since she made her professional acting debut in a 2005 episode of Cold Case, Tessa Thompson has seen her star rise to incredible heights. Recurring roles on television shows like Veronica Mars, Heroes, and Detroit 1-8-7 eventually led to leading parts in impressive features, and now she's at a point where she is concurrently starring in three different major franchises. Thanks to years of dedicated and outstanding work, her name now carries a significant amount of clout in the industry – and it’s something of which she’s not only aware, but using responsibly.

This brings us to her new film, Little Woods: the feature debut from writer/director Nia DaCosta. It’s an example of a smaller production that’s garnered more attention because of the cast involved – the ensemble also including Lily James, Lance Reddick, and James Badge Dale – but it should also be noted that Tessa Thompson’s involvement goes beyond just her part as the story’s protagonist. The movie also sees her credited as an executive producer for the first time, and as I recently learned during an interview, it’s a reflection of her desire to become more hands on with the projects that she chooses. Thompson explained,

[Nia DaCosta and I] got on and had a familiarity really quickly, and she was very generous because I was sort of at a point where I wanted to be more than just a cog in something moving. If I was going attach myself to projects and I was passionate about them, I'm someone that sort of looks at the whole picture and thinks really macro. So it became clear to me that I wanted to start producing, and really be integral to the project.

Following its world premiere last year at the Tribeca Film Festival, Little Woods will be getting a limited theatrical release this week, and in advance of the screenings I recently had the immense pleasure of sitting down with Tessa Thompson and Nia DaCosta together to talk about the film. Through our conversation I learned that Thompson was actually one of the first people to sign on to be a part of the movie, and what started as a simple leading role opportunity eventually expanded and led to her debut as an executive producer.

Continuing, Tessa Thompson acknowledged that she is currently at a place in her career where she can help support projects that might otherwise not have the opportunity to be made – and that very much includes movies like Little Woods, which is a dark, original indie drama with a female lead that tackles many prescient issues and themes (I can guarantee there aren’t too many of those currently playing at your local cineplex). At the same time, though, she also noted how important it was to let Nia DaCosta make the movie she wanted to make and not invade the creative process too much:

Particularly when you get to a place where you can help finance a thing, then you want to be able to talk about what the thing is in real robust ways. So [Nia DaCosta] and the producers were really generous letting me come on as an EP, so we continued to work through that. It was really cool through the cut, and at a certain point I was like, 'It's yours.' I can't give notes. It's not my movie, and I see myself and I'm like, 'I don't know - just do another take where I don't have a double chin.' Like, ‘I can't talk about this movie in an intelligible way, so it's yours now.’ (laughs)

Obviously that’s dripping with humorous self-deprecation, but Nia DaCosta followed up by stressing the reality of Tessa Thompson’s impact as a collaborator on the movie – particularly when it came to her specific role. The filmmaker noted that she puts a lot of stock in the perspectives of her actors, and through the production relied on Thompson to make the character as authentic and consistent as possible. Said DaCosta, talking directly to her star,

You also asked lots of questions, and there's always a moment for me personally where you kind of hand the character over because it's like someone checking your work, you know what I mean? It's asking questions like 'What's this?' and tracking the character - who this person is, who this person was before, and who they might be afterwards.

Based on an original screenplay by Nia DaCosta, Little Woods tells the story of two sisters, Ollie (Tessa Thompson) and Deb (Lily James), living in North Dakota trying to make ends meet and take care of the people they love. Unfortunately, things start to snowball in a bad way when they learn not only that their mother’s house is facing foreclosure, but that Deb is pregnant. While Ollie is still on probation following a past arrest, she finds herself forced back into the business of illegally running pills across the Canadian border in order to make the money that she needs, and in doing so risks everything that she has and wants in life.

Distributed by Neon, Little Woods will be playing in limited theaters starting this Friday, April 19th – and you can be sure that we’ll be hearing a lot more about Tessa Thompson productions and new Nia DaCosta movies in the years to come.

Zoe Saldana Reveals How She Honestly Doesn't Know Gamora's Destiny In Avengers: Endgame

Zoe Saldana Reveals How She Honestly Doesn't Know Gamora's Destiny In Avengers: Endgame
Zoe Saldana as gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy

We lost a lot of fan favorite characters at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, but one of the most emotional losses came long before "the snap" when Thanos sacrificed his "daughter" Gamora in order to obtain one of the Infinity Stones. Of course, the Infinity Stones themselves mean that death is not necessarily permanent, but don't try asking Zoe Saldana what the future holds for Gamora, because even the actress herself says she doesn't really know. Because of the way the actors are never given the whole story on set, Saldana admits she has no idea what, if anything, is next for Gamora...

These last two years we’ve been in such a daze shooting these two films for Avengers. Nobody gets the right script because they gave it to misdirect you. We are, like, just gossiping in the trailer, kind of, like ... ‘What’s the other actor coming from?’ ‘What do you mean, what did you shoot when you shot with so-and-so?’ ‘Oh, crap, what’s going on?’ I honestly do not know Gamora’s destiny in the Marvel universe.

Zoe Saldana's comments to the New York Daily News are well structured as to not specifically give anything away. Still, you could certainly take her comments to mean that Gamora at least has some scenes in Avengers: Endgame. Of course, she could also be trying to intentionally misdirect by implying that when it's not the case.

Zoe Saldana makes it sound like she doesn't know if her character is brought back to life by the end of Avengers: Endgame or not, which seems unlikely, as one would certainly assume that if she did come back to life, she filmed a scene in which that happens. Still, considering how little some the Marvel actors are told, even about the scenes they are actually filming, it's possible the actress was in a scene and didn't really know what it was that was being filmed.

Of course, the fate of Gamora is a bit more important to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that we know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is actually happening. It's difficult to imagine a third Guardians film that doesn't include Gamora, but such a thing is certainly possible.

Of course, if we wanted to take Zoe Saldana's statement at face value, the idea that she doesn't know Gamora's destiny could simply mean she doesn't know where the road ends. Maybe Gamora does return to life, and Saldana even knows that, but if she doesn't know what Guardians 3 has in store for the character, then the character's true destiny is still up in the air.

This is a lot of hair splitting to be sure, but that's what you've got to expect as we sit here mere weeks away from finally seeing Avengers: Endgame. We'll have a lot of answers very soon, but until we get them, anything is possible.

Vin Diesel Breaks Silence Over James Gunn’s Reinstatement For Guardians 3

Vin Diesel Breaks Silence Over James Gunn’s Reinstatement For Guardians 3
Rocket's Infinity War poster

It's an extremely exciting time in The Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the 22 film long Infinity Saga comes to a close with Avengers: Endgame. Moviegoers have spent a decade seeing each and every installment in the shared universe, and the future post-Endgame is largely a mystery. This includes the release date of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which hasn't been revealed since James Gunn was rehired as the film's director.

The highly anticipated Guardians threequel was originally set to be one of the first installments in Marvel's Phase Four, although James Gunn's firing last July put the movie on indefinite hold. He was recently reinstated as the movie's director, which is something the fans and cast seem thrilled about. Now Vin Diesel has broken his silence on the matter, recently posting on social media saying:

Later in the week I had the luxury of seeing [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige and [co-president] Louis [D’Esposito], and it’s amazing to see how sacred the Groot character is to the whole Marvel universe. Shout out to Alan Horn for using his heart to in making the right decisions for Guardians 3.

While not mentioning James Gunn by name, Vin Diesel thanks Marvel producer Alan Horn for making the "right decision." I think we all know that he means by that.

Vin Diesel's comments come from his recent Instagram post, and shouldn't exactly surprise the fandom. Following James Gunn's unceremonious departure from the Guardians franchise, the cast of actors wrote a letter in solidarity with their director/producer. Diesel was included, so his feelings about the Gunn's reinstatement make a great deal of sense.

While not ever see physically onscreen, Vin Diesel's voice performance as Groot helped the character become massively popular when the first Guardians of the Galaxy hit theaters in 2014. And when the tree alien became an adorable baby in Guardians 2, the hype got even more real. And the last we saw him, he was a teenager age in Infinity War.

Check out Vin Diesel's Instagram video below.

It should be interesting to see where Groot goes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He'll presumably age more, and present another form of the character in the threequel. This may give the opportunity for Vin Diesel's real voice to be used, without the effects needed to bring the younger version of Groot to life in his most recent appearances. We'll just have to see.

It's currently unclear when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters, but you can catch up with Groot in Avengers: Endgame in theaters now. In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

The Lion King Official Trailer Adds Some Humor To Simba’s Stunning Savanna

The Lion King Official Trailer Adds Some Humor To Simba’s Stunning Savanna
Simba, Pumbaa, and Timon in The Lion King

The Lion King is one of the most popular animated movies Disney has made to date. It's almost a foregone conclusion it will be one of the studio's most popular remakes. A brand new trailer for the CGI spectacle is now here, and while it contains a lot of epic moments you'll remember from the original, it also provides us with some laughs, in the form of fan-favorite sidekicks Timon and Pumbaa. Check it out.

The trailer gives us a couple of new voices compared to the last one. Previously, the only voice we heard was James Earl Jones' which, considering he was in the original film, was something of a cheat. Now we hear Chiwetel Ejiofor for the first time as Scar. It's certainly a very different voice than that of Jeremy Irons, but no less menacing. We also get to see, but not hear, other characters like the hyenas, Nala, Zazu, and, of course, Simba himself.

Then, at the end, we hear Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen for the first time, as the voices of Timon and Pumbaa. The pair are performing a chorus of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which I guess means this is our first chance hearing any of the music in The Lion King, even though this probably wasn't the song people were waiting for.

Timon and Pumbaa sang the same song in the original Lion King as well, and seeing what we've seen before is pretty much what this trailer is all about. While some of the dialogue that we hear in the trailer isn't identical to lines from the original, many of the images are. We see Scar telling Simba to run away, and the hyenas chasing him as he does. We see Simba, Timon, and Pumbaa, walking along together in single file profile, one of the most iconic images from the animated classic.

While people certainly have fond memories of the original version, and are going to want to see their favorite parts in the remake, I certainly would like to see a little something different in the remake that will set it apart from the original, not simply have it be a complete retelling of the story as we already know. There's still plenty of space for such things to fit in between the scenes we love, and the classic moments are going to be what draws in a lot of the audience, but it would be nice to see something a little new in the trailer.

Either way, The Lion King is almost destined to be a hit. It will be the third Disney remake of 2019 following the recently released Dumbo and the upcoming Aladdin, but with a movie as popular as this one remake fatigue seems highly unlikely.

The new Lion King arrives in July.

Why X-Men: The Last Stands Version Of The Dark Phoenix Saga Didnt Work, According To Famke Janssen

Why X-Men: The Last Stands Version Of The Dark Phoenix Saga Didnt Work, According To Famke Janssen

It's not often you see a comic book storyline adapted more than once on-screen, but the X-Men franchise is doing that for the second time on the silver screen with The Dark Phoenix Saga. The first cinematic adaptation, 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, was met with mixed-to-negative critical reaction, and over a decade later, Dark Phoenix is aiming to deliver a more faithful version of the Jean Grey-centric tale from 1980. If you ask Famke Janssen, who played Jean Grey in the original X-Men trilogy, Dark Phoenix has a better chance at succeeding because unlike The Last Stand, it's dedicating the entire story to Jean's corruption. As Janssen put it:

I'm glad that The Dark Phoenix Saga is finally getting its due. When we tackled it in The Last Stand, it wasn't given enough time. I remember hearing from fans after we finished the film that they were disappointed that an enormous moment in the comics was given so little screen time. I'm happy for them to give Phoenix the due that she deserves.

Famke Janssen's thoughts echo what Dark Phoenix director and longtime X-Men producer Simon Kinberg said about X-Men: The Last Stand a few months ago. Kinberg actually co-wrote The Last Stand with Zak Penn, but as he acknowledged, the big mistake with that movie was that Jean Grey's being consumed by her Phoenix self was just a subplot alongside the mutant cure storyline. Both he and Janssen are in agreement that this is a story that deserves the entire run of a movie, not just a chunk of it.

We have a ways to go before we learn how Dark Phoenix compares to X-Men: The Last Stand, but as Famke Janssen indicated to Inverse, she's more confident this latest movie will fare better than the project she participated in. It also helps that Dark Phoenix is including alien elements, like Jessica Chastain's still-unidentified shapeshifter, although let's not kid ourselves, it's not going to have nearly as much cosmic flavor as The Dark Phoenix Saga did. As for Janssen, while she did return for brief appearances in The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past, like the rest of the original cast members, her time with this franchise looks to be permanently over, so she can enjoy Dark Phoenix as a pure fan/admirer.

While X-Men: The Last Stand took place in the "present day" (i.e. circa 2006), Dark Phoenix takes place in 1992, following almost a decade after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse. This time around, Jean Grey loses control and unleashes the Phoenix after a rescue mission in space, and once she starts causing mass chaos and destruction, it'll be up to the X-Men and other interested parties to stop her, though Jessica Chastain's character will be lingering in the shadows to manipulate Jean into doing her bidding.

Originally scheduled to be released last month Dark Phoenix was moved to February 14, 2019, and now it's set to come out on June 7, 2019. For everything else coming out next year, head to our 2019 release schedule.
